I am a veteran of Xingtan, Taiwan, from elementary school to university, and I have been doing it all the time; I am also an old gardener in special education, and I have been working on special education for decades, and I am still "old".

In my early years, I devoted myself to special education by chance, for "special love, give him special!" In middle age, I founded the special education department at Taiwan Normal University, just because "special careers require special talents!" In my later years, I came to Zhanjiang and founded the special education department of Lingnan Normal University in order to "one family on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and build a dream of special education together"!

This is a strange fate. When I was young, I was taciturn, introverted and shy, and was named a "plaster statue" by my female classmates. In that era when "good card" was in power, I was a "model student"; after graduating from the normal school, I became a primary school teacher, and under the influence of the normal school spirit of "learning as a teacher and acting as a model in the world", I devoted myself to becoming a "desperate man"; feeling that the society was changing rapidly, I continued to think of new ideas and "create" new things, and became a "drifty boy" in the education industry. It seems that I am no longer the same as I am, but what remains unchanged is that I have always been observing education and students. Although I have worked hard, I am happy.

Among the things I have come up with and created, the most cherished are undoubtedly the Special Education Department of Taiwan Normal University founded 36 years ago in Taiwan in Baodao Taiwan and the Special Education Department of Lingnan Normal University founded 10 years ago in mainland China. I am happy to see the two special education babies growing up and thriving with the support of many noble people. I am both grateful and grateful.

Loves Lingshi, and creates special education

I got along with Lingshi in 2004. That year coincided with the 100th anniversary of Lingshi Normal University’s birth. I was entrusted by my old friend, Dr. Feng Guanfu, a native of Zhanjiang, to lead the Taiwan delegation to congratulate me as the chairman of the Taiwan Normal University’s School of Education. When I came to Lingshi, I realized that Lingshi not only has a century-old teacher education (only 2 years younger than Beijing Normal University). Its predecessor, Leiyang Academy , was founded in during the Chongzhen period of Ming Dynasty (1636), and has a history of 368 years, the same age as Harvard University . The ancient banyan on campus is towering and has a strong humanistic atmosphere, which impressed me deeply. In 2009, I led a delegation to congratulate Lingshi on the 105th anniversary of the school.

The third time I had to contact Ling Master was in 2012. This contact was no longer a beautiful encounter, but a affectionate invitation from the principal Luo Haiou , who later served as the party secretary of the school) at that time. In view of the need to cultivate special education talents, Principal Luo sent Professor Zheng Rongshuang of the Department of Psychology to Taiwan in 2011 to inspect the special education teacher training mechanism. He went to Taiwan in person in early 2012 to visit a normal school. Under the introduction of Dr. Feng Guanfu, we met. He hopes to take advantage of the experience of Taiwan Normal University and have a high starting point and invite me to come to Zhanjiang to assist in the establishment of special education majors. We have similar interests and have a lot of talks. Feeling from Principal Luo's enthusiasm for education and grand insight, I came to Zhanjiang, a foreign land in August 2012 and began the second spring of my life. Professor Zheng Rongshuang of Lingshi jointly founded the Lingshi Special Education Department, and then actively introduced high-end special education talents in Taiwan and served as the department director until now.

Principal Luo/Secretary promised to give this little brother who is "she is too late" to support the whole school. He said, "Special Education Special Office!" Everyone felt it when it was done. The school leaders who took over the baton five years later and the college leaders in charge continued to provide support, and the teachers and students of the department also worked hard in return.

Nowadays, the Lingshi Special Education Department has 18 full-time teachers, and the lineup is strong. Among them, 17 have doctoral degrees and 1 is currently studying for a doctoral degree; 9 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 lecturers, and 1 assistant professor.There are 7 Taiwanese teachers in the teaching staff, all of whom have doctoral degrees (3 of whom are doctoral students studying in the United States). They have rich experience, are serious in teaching, and integrate into the Lingshi family. They work together with mainland teachers to cultivate talents and cooperate continuously, which has become a major feature of Lingshi.

Special education is loving, building dreams and building a down-to-earth

Like most students of Lingnan Normal University, most students of Lingnan Normal University special education come from rural areas or families with poor economic resources, but they are simple, polite, hardworking, and have deep development potential. After four years of cultivation, they can clearly see their progress: they are confused when they come in, and they are all radiant and confident when they leave school.

Lingshi Special Education currently has 335 students and 513 graduates (seventh class). The successful landing rate of graduates (employment + graduate school study) is as high as 99%. According to the follow-up survey, 95% of employers are very satisfied with the graduates' work performance. As for students, in addition to studying hard in class, they also actively participated in research, various college student scientific research competitions and social services, and performed well. For example, in the past five years, students have published 2 SCI papers and participated in the College Student Challenge Cup competition and won 5 provincial awards.

Lingshi cooperated with Pingtung University and Taichung University of Education in Taiwan to arrange students from the special education department to go to Taiwan for one semester of special education training to expand their horizons and increase their experience. This "3.5+0.5 Talent Cultivation Plan" has received strong support from school leaders. Since its establishment in 2014, 403 students have gone to Taiwan for training. They all went out happily and returned home happily. The results have been recognized. It has become a highlight of Lingshi's school management and the greatest hope for students in four years. Class 15 Mo Xueqing wrote the book "The Love of Lingnan Students' Treasure Island" (Psychological Press) through personal experience. It is both literary and emotional, vivid and touching.

Lingshi Special Education emphasizes the cultivation of high-quality teachers in all persons and establishes a three-coherent teacher education and cultivation model. Based on the teacher spirit of "learning first as a person, then as a teacher" and the way of learning "learning should be like a pyramid, which can be both broad and high", all the way to enter the special education door must be progressive step by step. According to the three consistent teacher education concepts of "modern good nationals - outstanding college students - professional special education people", undergraduate students in special education must have "five meetings", "five forces" and "five possessions".

The so-called "five meetings" include learning to seek knowledge, learning to do things, learning to coexist, learning to develop and learning to change; the so-called "five forces" include the ability to learn independently, the ability to think independently, the ability to manage time, the ability to adapt to the environment and the ability to keep pace with the times; the so-called "five things" include the ability of a teacher, the cultivation of a teacher, the ability to teach, special love and special knowledge. We hope to cultivate professional experts based on standard-based concepts.

During the study period, students are encouraged to collaborate with teachers to conduct special research, and strictly require the graduation thesis to reach a certain level. In addition, in 2018, Lingshi established a "3+2" special education volunteer service team to connect with the society. The service team members recruit new students every year, adhere to the principle of "passing on and helping" and drive students one by one, with a lot of results and received great praise.

Based on "the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family, and the special education situation is stronger", Lingshi launched the Cross-Strait Special Education High-end Forum in 2014 to promote academic exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, seeking common growth, and hosted the first and second conferences, which received enthusiastic resounding. After the third session, universities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait took turns to host the program without interruption.

Under the instructions of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, the Guangdong Special Education Teacher Development Alliance was established at Lingnan Normal University in June 2017, and Lingnan Normal University was elected as the chairman unit. A new term meeting was held in December 2021, and Lingnan Normal University was reborn as the chairman unit.

In 2017, Lingnan Normal University was approved as the Key Laboratory of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Guangdong General Colleges and Universities (Director of Education) and the Key Laboratory of Special Children Development and Education in Guangdong Province (Director of Science and Technology) in 2019. A special education research center was established in 2019.

At this point, the Lingnan Normal University special education development platform has taken shape and has great potential.

In order to accelerate the cultivation of high-quality special education teachers, strengthen special education research, and promote social loving services, Lingshi Special Education will continue to work hard to seek greater progress. We will implement the innovative concept from the following four directions:.

4. Innovation. Due to the good early childhood education effect, preschool special education (special early childhood education) has become a top priority. Therefore, it is necessary to plan a preschool special teaching course for students in the preschool education department and the special education department to take electives.
