Biography of scholars
Su Dongshui, chief professor of Fudan University, economist and management scientist, founder of Oriental Management Theory, and honorary dean of the Oriental Management Research Institute of Fudan University. Born in Quanzhou in October 1931, he graduated from Xiamen University in 1953. He worked in the Ministry of Heavy Industry in his early years and conducted investigations and research in industrial and mining enterprises and rural areas many times. Since then, we have continued to work in practice, teaching and scientific research in universities and the Academy of Social Sciences. We have always carried forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture, created the discipline of Chinese Oriental Management, and took the lead in integrating Chinese management, Western management, and Chinese business management theory, and refined innovation to create the Oriental Management School. Develop the theory of national economic management, establish the theoretical system of economic development in China's coastal region, first proposed the " Quanzhou economic development model" in 1986, and carried out research on Chinese enterprise management, with fruitful academic achievements. He has won more than ten special prizes at the international, national and provincial levels, and has more than 80 major works and nearly 20 million words. He was commended by the State Council as an "Expert for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of China's Higher Education". In 2014, he was awarded the "Management Science Award" in the academic category of the 4th China Management Science Society, and in 2018, he won the "Fudan Management Lifetime Achievement Award".
Sixty years have passed. Mr. Su Dongshui, chief professor at Fudan University, worked hard and persistently brought Chinese traditional cultural power into the academic, teaching and practice fields of management, integrated the Chinese thought and culture that had been accumulated for thousands of years into the scientific research and application of contemporary management, and creatively systematically transformed it into a discipline - Oriental Management. Based on the theory and practice of Chinese management, Western management, and Chinese business management, he extracted fifteen philosophical elements, including "Tao, change, people, power, reality, harmony, instruments, law, trust, planning, strategy, effectiveness, diligence, and roundness", and summarized the "three-for-three" Eastern management theory with the theory of human-centeredness, the theory of human virtue, and the theory of human-centeredness, namely "people-oriented, morality first, and people-oriented", thus constructing the "five-character classic" theoretical system of Eastern management with "learning, doing, governing, doing, and being harmonious".
Oriental Management Science created by Su Dongshui is a modern management discipline containing the essence of Chinese and foreign management, and is a fusion of the essence of Chinese, Western and Chinese business management. It is not only deeply embedded in tradition, but also innovates, and is "Oriental Management Culture for the 21st Century". In order to commend this outstanding scholar's outstanding contribution, in November 2018, the Fudan Management Award Foundation awarded him the "Fudan Management Lifetime Achievement Award".
Academic leader
Su Dongshui was enlightened in a private school when he was young. His interest in Chinese traditional culture was developed through the influence of traditional classics such as "Dream of Red Mansions" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". And his understanding of the management ideas in Eastern wisdom also emerged.
"Dream of Red Mansions" is a case that Su Dongshui likes to tell students in management classes. He would nickname Wang Xifeng in the book "the mother of management science." This novel analysis method surprised the students and reflected Su Dongshui's pioneering ability in management and Chinese cultural understanding.
As early as 1976, Su Dongshui began to publish articles to discuss ancient Chinese management ideas , and held a lecture on "Economic Management Thoughts of "Dream of Red Mansions" and began to explore the economic thoughts of "Dream of Red Mansions" from the perspective of an economist.
When Su Dongshui read traditional Chinese classics and was moved by the humanistic philosophy and management ideas contained in it, regret also arose in his heart. These thoughts are unique and profound, but they have not been valued in modern society. While exploring classic resources of ancient China, he studied foreign management works in depth and made arduous explorations that integrate ancient and modern times with Chinese and Western countries in the field of management.
In Su Dongshui's view, Eastern management and Western management have essentially the same and different aspects. The two hold different views on human problems, and there are differences in their discussions on human behavior. “Our management in the East values ‘people’."Su Dongshui believes that Eastern management ideas emphasize people's enthusiasm, creativity and their own potential. "The core idea is to be a human being. It is actually very simple to be a human being. It mainly uses people's enthusiasm, creativity and attitude towards serving others. But it is not very common for China to accept this view. "
After decades of thinking, Su Dongshui, based on the theory and practice of Chinese management, Western management, and Chinese business management, extracted 15 philosophical elements such as "Tao, change, people, power, reality, harmony, instruments, law, trust, planning, strategy, effectiveness, diligence, and roundness", and summarized the "three-for-three" Eastern management theory with people-oriented theory, human virtue theory, and human-oriented theory as the core, namely "people-oriented, morality first, and human-oriented", thus constructing "learning (Chinese management, Western management, Chinese business management), "three-for-three", The "Five Character Classic" theoretical system of Oriental Management with governance (four governances), actions (five elements), and harmony (people, harmony, harmony) is particularly pointed out that the Oriental Management created by Su Dongshui is not only deeply rooted in tradition, but also innovates, and is an "Oriental Management Culture for the 21st century".
Su Dongshui describes Oriental Management in this way: "It is a modern management discipline containing the essence of Chinese and foreign management", "is a fusion of the essence of Chinese, Western and Chinese business management, and is also the result of the practical practice of management. "
At the same time, Su Dongshui also used Marxist thought to form the ideological structure of Oriental Management. When he was teaching at Fudan University, he attached great importance to the teaching of Marxist thought: "I have taken classes in 13 departments and talked about Marxism first." "I built Oriental Management in the form of Marx's dialectical materialism. "
, Fudan University School of Management , director of the Department of Industrial Economics, Rui Mingjie, called his mentor Su Dongshui a scholar who "started the school": "The theoretical system of Eastern management fills the gap in the world management community's research on Eastern management theory. "
In his sixty years of academic career, Su Dongshui has written and edited many heavyweight management works, which have received widespread attention and strong responses from the academic community. "National Economic Management" won the "National Book Award"; "China Management General Journal" systematically sorted out famous works and cases in ancient Chinese history, which caused shock in the Chinese management community after its publication, and laid the foundation for the subsequent launch of the Oriental Management System; the publication of "Oriental Management" marked the formal establishment of the Oriental Management System; "Management Psychology" released millions of volumes, constructing a theoretical system of management psychology based on the idea of "artificial learning"... Every page of the book is like a drop of water, gathering into a river and surrounds the society, allowing the essence of ancient thought to be integrated into modern management thinking, and allowing the traditional Eastern culture to flow into the ocean of management in the world.
Spiritual inheritor
The reason why Su Dongshui regards "human beings" and "virtue first" as the spiritual core of Oriental management is not only benefiting from the influence of ancient classics, but also many people use this spirit to influence him to cherish this precious quality.
In 1931, Su Dongshui was born in Quanzhou, Fujian Province and grew up in an overseas Chinese family. Speaking of his hometown Quanzhou, Su Dongshui believes that this is an eight-school education integration The holy land of Eastern culture. This cultural diversity and highly inclusive regional cultural characteristics more or less planted the seeds for his subsequent academic direction choice.
In the old house in his hometown, Su Dongshui's father hung a big word "good". In his memory, Sumen had a strong atmosphere of doing good deeds. His grandfather has always educated his next generation to do good deeds and cultivate virtues, "You must do good deeds and be a good person, and establish a concept of morality and benevolence. "After returning to Quanzhou, my grandfather spontaneously devoted himself to the construction of his hometown, actively contributed money and efforts to repair roads and bridges, and benefited his hometown.
Su Dongshui's father was a volunteer doctor who saved the world. He did not charge money for treating people's illnesses, and he also donated to a school. In Su Dongshui's impression, his father studied and accumulated virtue throughout his life, "Accumulating virtue is a good virtue. "The elders' words and deeds have had a profound impact on the construction of a young man's values.
Su Dongshui studied business management at Xiamen University, and was both a job and a study. In the third year of college, he read the famous Marx book " Capital ".At that time, Wang Yanan, the president of Xiamen University, was the Chinese translator of "Das Kapital". Su Dongshui said that this was a book that affected his whole life and benefited him throughout his life. "Das Kapital" says that everything has dualities, one is natural attribute and the other is social attribute. Natural attributes have a commonality. If the commonality is negated, the essence of things is negated." Marx proposed the duality of things in "Das Kapital". This idea helped Su Dongshui realize in his subsequent research that Western management studies attach too much importance to interests.
After graduating from university, Su Dongshui went to work in the old industrial base in Northeast China. On the front line of industrial and mining, he formed a friendship with his colleagues. Back then, the risk of going down the mine was very high, and experienced miners were able to predict possible landslides through sound. Once, the squad leader of the same person found that the situation was wrong and asked Su Dongshui to evacuate quickly. Because of the squad leader's early warning, Su Dongshui survived the landslide accident, but the squad leader was killed.
Since then, Su Dongshui has remembered this worker all his life, and his spirit of being a human being in danger has infected him for the rest of his life: "The spirit of workers being selfless and considerate is very respected and loved by others." This is not unrelated to Su Dongshui's future refinement of this essence of Chinese culture into "people for people", and has a profound impact on his entire academic research thought.
Counting the difficult moments in his life in detail, what Su Dongshui is most unforgettable is this early grassroots practice. At that time, the harsh climate and arduous conditions in the Northeast made many people afraid, but under such an environment, he wrote nearly 100 articles and investigated issues such as enterprise management, technical management, and improvement of labor productivity in industrial and mining enterprises and rural areas.
In the most backward Jiapigou, Su Dongshui has experienced an extremely poor working environment. Since then, he has set his mind for his life: "I should be a young scholar and should devote myself to serving China in this life!" In his heart, scholars should do academics for the people.
Teacher and Instructor
On the road of scientific research, Su Dongshui worked hard and constantly sought; in terms of talent training, he did not hesitate to work hard. In 1986, Su Dongshui founded the Institute of Economics and Management of Fudan University. As the director and director of the Department of Economic Management, he devotes his efforts to teaching and scientific research. In the evaluation of 174 research institutions in key universities of the Ministry of Education, the Institute of Economics and Management of Fudan University won the first place in the comprehensive research institute of liberal arts research institutions in universities, the first place in the research institute of economics and the first place in the per capita training of graduate students with outstanding scientific and educational achievements.
In order to further expand the research depth and breadth of influence of Oriental Management, Su Dongshui applied to establish a master's and doctoral degree in Oriental Management at Fudan University, injecting strength into the talent cultivation of Chinese management.
In June 1999, Su Dongshui founded the first Oriental Management Research Center in the country at Fudan University and served as the director of the center. He helped universities across the country such as Shanghai Jiaotong University , Shanghai International Studies University , Hohai University , Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, and Huaqiao University , etc. have successively established more than 10 research centers and research institutes and other Oriental Management teaching and scientific research bases; helped Shanghai International Studies University and Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology offer oriental management courses and professional directions for graduate and undergraduate students.
Su Dongshui has taught in universities and research institutions such as Fudan University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. He has trained more than 200 masters, more than 80 doctoral students and more than 20 postdoctoral students. He was commended by the State Council as an "Expert for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of China's Higher Education".
Spring breeze and rain, peaches and plums are fragrant. Over the past few decades, Su Dongshui's students have made extraordinary achievements in the management academic, political and business circles, demonstrating the application of Eastern management ideas in theoretical research and practice.
Professor Rui Mingjie is Su Dongshui's earliest graduate student. He studied under Su Dongshui in 1983 and began his master's degree in industrial economics. In Rui Mingjie's view, management is a subject that is closely integrated with reality. Teacher Su has his own way to cultivate students, which is to let students enter the study of real-life problems.
"Teacher Su does not 'lock' students in the book, but allows us to participate in a series of theoretical or realistic scientific research he presided over."When Rui Mingjie had not graduated from his master's degree, he followed Su Dongshui to Quanzhou, Fujian. Under the organization and guidance of the teacher, Rui Mingjie and his classmates told entrepreneurs about management theories and methods and carried out local economic management research.
Su Dongshui also asked Rui Mingjie to preside over the field research report on Quanzhou's development strategy topic. Rui Mingjie deeply realized that management is an applied discipline. Although it requires theoretical research, it is more about solving practical problems. Management teaching and educating people is not just "teaching", but also cultivating and training students' talents in practice.
Su Dongshui's educational thoughts and methods have deeply influenced Rui Mingjie.
In addition to the educational policy of both theory and practice, as a teacher Su Dongshui's humble attitude also impressed the students. Professor Zhao Xiaokang of Donghua University School of Management still remembers that in the past, Su Dongshui offered a doctoral course. The teaching scene at that time was that the small office was filled with students who came to choose the course. Su Dongshui would greet each student cordially, pour tea for everyone, and watch the students have a warm discussion peacefully, interspersed with comments and questions. Su Dongshui's kind attitude eliminated the sense of distance between teachers and students.
Su Yong, director of the Department of Corporate Management of the School of Management of Fudan University, said when talking about this relationship between teachers and students, Su Dongshui was a very generous elder: "Whether in class or in daily conversations, we discuss with us in a peaceful and negotiated tone. He has always discussed various issues with us with an equal attitude. ”
Cultural communication
Once an American management scientist said to Su Dongshui: "China has no management, no entrepreneurs, and no textbooks for its own management characteristics. "Su Dongshui regrets this. He quickly took the opportunity of the International Management Conference held in Japan to deliver a speech on the topic of "Ancient Chinese Management Behavior", pointing out that China has a very excellent management culture, but no one has explored it well, and no one has explained it from the perspective of the nation's self-esteem, nationality, and management perspective. With a sense of mission, Su Dongshui devoted himself to the research of Eastern Management Thoughts, and was committed to enabling scholars and enterprises to better base themselves on Eastern culture and China's national conditions, and establish a management system with Chinese characteristics and oriental characteristics.
Su Dongshui has successively founded the world Management Forum, Oriental Management Forum, Chinese Business Management Forum, Oriental Elite Lecture Hall, etc. For decades, he has been committed to promoting Oriental Management and Chinese Management Research to the world.
On July 15, 1997, the IFSAM (World Management Association Alliance) World Management Conference was held in Shanghai. This conference is the debut of Chinese management research in the field of world management. Su Dongshui was elected as the president of the conference and gave a report on the topic of "Oriental Management Culture for the 21st Century", officially introducing Oriental Management Culture to the domestic and foreign academic circles, and authoritative media called this conference "Oriental Management Culture" Theory culture is famous in the world.
After this, in order to make the world more accurately understand the Oriental Management Culture based on China's excellent culture, make Oriental Management better integrate into the world, and promote the research, education and communication of Oriental Management, Su Dongshui, in conjunction with the IFSAM China Committee and well-known universities across the country, holds the "World Management Forum and Oriental Management Forum" every year. It has successively been in Fudan University, Shanghai Foreign Studies University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Peking University , Hohai University, French National School of Arts and Arts, Huaqiao University, Shanghai Engineering The University of Technology and Donghua University and other well-known domestic and foreign institutions are held.
The themes of each World Management Forum and Oriental Management Forum are profound and forward-looking. Among them, the high-level speakers and fruitful conference results have won unanimous recognition from the industry at home and abroad. It has been held for 22 sessions so far. It is not only a summary and review of the academic achievements of Oriental Management, but also a bridge for the interconnection between Chinese management and world management. Su Dongshui himself served as the chairman of the 17th Forum. It is precisely he that allowed the world management community to hear the unique voice from China and witness the contribution of Chinese management scholars.
In 2008, the 9th World Management Conference of IFSAM was held in Shanghai, and scholars and entrepreneurs from more than 30 IFSAM member countries gathered at Fudan University. This is the first time that the World Management Conference, known as the "Olympic Conference" in the global management community, was held in China. The President of the Conference Su Dongshui took "Eastern and West Management Culture Integration Development" as the theme of this conference, and its core highlights the word "he".
Speaking of the core idea of this conference, Su Dongshui said: "Seeking cooperation and development on the basis of 'harmony' is conducive to the integration and development of Chinese and foreign management disciplines. This will play a role in changing the current tendency of westernization of management education, integrating the essence of ancient and modern management in China and abroad, and building modern management science."
At this conference, participants from various countries achieved the collision and integration of ideas, and at the same time increased the influence of Chinese management in the world. Professor Chen Zhicheng, director of the World Management Association Alliance, praised Su Dongshui for creating a platform for bringing Chinese management scholars to the world and showing the research results of Chinese management scholars.
Su Dongshui is full of hope for future discipline development. He believes that the development of East and West management disciplines should pay attention to practical research, theoretical innovation, and talent cultivation. The world is developing rapidly and economic and cultural exchanges are becoming more and more profound. Su Dongshui firmly believes that the academic achievements that integrate East and West management ideas can influence the world and make greater contributions to international management practice.
Su Dongshui devoted his life to the vast research on management. He started his school and taught tirelessly; by constructing the theoretical system of oriental management, he projected the wisdom and glory of oriental cultural thought into the practice of today's society, allowing Chinese management research to embark on the broad stage of world scientific research, and cared for individuals for learning and benefited the society with realistic strategies.
All rivers face east, and the best is like water.
