In October 2017, at the 44th World Skills Competition held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Liang Zhibin, a student from Guangzhou Urban Construction Vocational School, won the championship in the masonry project, becoming China's "first person" to win the gold medal in the World Skills Masonry Project.
Two years later, at the 45th World Skills Competition held in Kazan, Russia, Chen Zifeng, who is also a Guangzhou Urban Construction Vocational School, won the gold medal in the masonry project and stood on the world's highest podium.
Several years have passed. What kind of development have they made and what contributions have they made on the road to a strong country in skills?
Liang Zhibin: Rejecting an annual salary of one million, becoming the youngest "national advanced"
World Skills Competition is the highest level of world professional skills competition, known as the "World Skills Olympics". When he stood at the top of the "Olympics" in 2017, Liang Zhibin was only 19 years old.
Liang Zhibin's hometown of Wuchuan, Guangdong, is known as the "hometown of Chinese architecture". Generations of Wuchuan people have taken the lead in getting rich and living a better life in the construction industry with their own skills. Under the influence of his eyes, Liang Zhibin also hopes to make a name for himself with his construction skills, so entering a vocational school to study architecture became his choice after graduating from junior high school.
When entering Guangzhou Urban Construction Vocational School, Liang Zhibin had no idea about the existence of the World Championship, and he did not expect that he would change his life path with this. His idea is pure: follow the master to practice the skills well.
The pain of learning masonry is in the environment and in the state of mind. When the heat in Lingnan was hot, the temperature at the training base was over 40 degrees Celsius, which was extremely stuffy and rainy. Even if it rained heavily, mud and water were everywhere, and my feet didn't know where to put it. The master's requirements are very strict. Whether it is horizontal measurement, vertical direction and angle measurement, the measurement difference error of masonry does not exceed 1 mm. Liang Zhibin carefully compared the drawings, holding bricks in one hand and tools in the other hand, cutting bricks and grouting joints, training for 8 to 10 hours a day, repeating one movement thousands of times. He felt a little aggrieved when he was sore in the back. He failed the measurement and started over again. He felt a little aggrieved, but this practice took two years.
training is so hard, why can you persist? Liang Zhibin said that the pattern on the wall fascinated him, "Masonry is not just masonry for me, but art."
Liang Zhibin had a habit when training: not wearing gloves. He said that this will more accurately sense the thickness of the mortar and maintain a sharp feel to the flatness of the wall. This made his skin crack and he often bleed, "the skin has to be changed every quarter."
When the reporter met Liang Zhibin, he had not conducted such high-intensity training for four years, but he still retained the traces of his previous training. He spread his hands, and close to his fingers above his right palm, there were four yellow round cocoons - which were polished with masonry tools all year round.
In 2016, Liang Zhibin was selected into the national training team with the second place in the national competition, and went through layers of selections of 10 to 5, 5 to 2, and 2 to 1. During the more than a year of preparation, Liang Zhibin built countless walls, shoveled more than 200,000 mud and sand mortar, and finally stood in the arena of the World Championship.
Although intensive training was conducted in the early stage, the changes in the World Championship that year still made Liang Zhibin feel a little panicked: in the past, the drawings were announced three months in advance, but the drawings were announced in the first three days of the World Championship in 2017, which puts forward requirements for the players' ability to quickly recognize pictures; the competition required the players to complete three works and five modules within 22 hours, which was two more than the three modules training in previous training; the brick size provided by the competition was inaccurate, which will directly affect the accuracy of the masonry wall...
Despite this, Liang Zhibin was only nervous for 5 minutes after the start of the competition. Soon, his heart sank, his hands were raised and bricks fell, and he gradually became better. His mind was not thinking about winning the championship, but just building the "artwork" in front of him... After the 22 hours of creation, Liang Zhibin won a gold medal that the Chinese had never won!
Liang Zhibin is in a fire.After returning to China, various courtesy and honors flocked to him: he won the Guangdong Province May 1st Labor Medal in 2017; in 2019, the school established Liang Zhibin Model Worker Innovation Studio; in 2020, he became the youngest national advanced worker in the country... A company offered an annual salary of one million yuan to invite him to join, but he politely declined and instead joined his alma mater and became a teacher. He said: "I am far from doing well enough. I want to stay in school to continue studying than going to the company to work, and at the same time teach the skills I have learned to the younger generation."
Liang Zhibin's "out of the circle" has also made vocational education popular. He told reporters that when he first enrolled in secondary vocational schools, the school still had not completed quotas in July and August every year, and now it is hard to find one person in May and June.
At present, Liang Zhibin is planning to transform the results of the World Championships to contribute to the promotion of rural revitalization. Not long ago, he and several members of the studio built a brick wall of "Ruxi Eight Scenery" more than 40 meters long and 1.8 meters high in the South China Sea of Foshan. It used tens of thousands of bricks to spread the customs and customs of the local villages. This is a physical docking project for school-enterprise cooperation. Because it belongs to the category of masonry art, the construction progress is one-tenth of the construction progress of ordinary construction sites: it took three or five people more than a month to complete it. Now, this "Eight Scenery of Ruxi" has become a different scenery in the local village, which has also made Liang Zhibin make a wish: in the future, you can see your own artwork all over the country.
Chen Zifeng: Bringing the world's advanced wall building technology into Xinjiang
is different from Liang Zhibin's professional background. Chen Zifeng, the gold medalist in the masonry project of the 45th World Skills Competition, became a monk halfway. He studied engineering surveying. After winning the engineering surveying project in the National Vocational College Skills Competition, he believed that "there is more skilled and not overwhelming", so he started to learn masonry from scratch. Who would have thought that this "zero foundation" secondary vocational student made rapid progress in preparing for the World Championships and rushed into the World Championships.
Why can you pass the ranks of masters? Chen Zifeng revealed his "secret" to reporters: he used his brain while training, reflected on what he did not do well every night, and then considered how to improve. When he saw his own progress, he would be particularly motivated. "Everyone's training time is the same. If you think more efficient and better methods than others, you will be stronger than others."
Like Liang Zhibin, Chen Zifeng's preparations were not mixed with honors and rankings. The purpose of the two of them learning masonry was pure: to practice a skill well and do every work well.
After winning the World Championship, Chen Zifeng chose to return to his alma mater like Liang Zhibin to cultivate more excellent "seed players" for the skills competition. In October last year, Chen Zifeng signed up to participate in the Guangdong Province "National Aid to Tibet and Xinjiang 10,000 Teachers Teaching Support Plan" and went to the Secondary Vocational and Technical School in Shufu County, Kashgar, Xinjiang, and became the youngest teaching support teacher since the implementation of the plan.
"I am so young, and I can have more energy to devote my skills to the construction of the western region and give local children a skill." This was the original intention of Chen Zifeng, who was 23 years old at that time, to sign up for aid to Xinjiang.
In Kashgar, the construction industry is very market-oriented, and the masonry and inlay workers are all very popular. However, due to the backward local education level, there are not many local people who can do this industry. Chen Zifeng found that local vocational education is still very weak, and the facilities, equipment and consumables and tools used for teaching are not complete.
reporter learned that the Guangzhou Aid to Xinjiang work team brought funds to local secondary vocational colleges and bought equipment to create a world skills championship studio for Shufu County Secondary Vocational and Technical School. Chen Zifeng, the masonry project champion of the 45th World Skills Competition, served as the studio host. The studio includes 10 members including the national team candidates of the World Skills Competition, "National Advanced Workers", and senior technicians. By deepening the reform of the talent training model, promoting school-enterprise cooperation, and accelerating the construction of the "dual-teacher" teacher team, the training of skill competition contestants is used as a test field to lead a team of teachers and students with strong hands-on ability and combining theory and practice.

Chen Zifeng said that the students of this secondary vocational school in Shufu County can endure hardships and endure loneliness. They originally had to go home every week, but because of preparing for the vocational skills competition, they gave up their weekend breaks and practiced hard at the training base. Just last month, good news came from Guangzhou’s “World Skills Champion Studio” to Xinjiang: 4 studio students won the first, second and third prizes in the masonry and tiles veneering projects of the 2022 First Vocational Skills Competition of the Autonomous Region in Kashgar Regional Examination Competition. Among them, student Ablikmu Yasen was shortlisted for the Kashgar Regional Masonry Project Training Team with the first place to prepare for the first Vocational Skills Competition of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In the future, the winners of the autonomous region will be sent to participate in the second Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China and go to the national competition stage.
