GP License: Conditions for participating in the MotoGP Championship
Just as drivers participating in the F1 need to have a FIA Super Licence, drivers participating in the MotoGP Championship also need a FIM Grand Prix Licence issued by FIM.
According to the FIM competition rules, the age of drivers who want to apply for or renew the GP license must be between 18 and 50 years old (Moto2 is 16-50 years old, Moto3 is 16-28 years old, and the first applicant must not exceed 25 years old), and must undergo FIM qualification review.
Factory Team and Independent Team
In the competition and technical rules of FIM, there are two types of participating teams, namely "Factory Team" and "Independent Team". As the name suggests, the team is a fleet directly operated and managed by the car factory. In theory, the drivers of the factory team can directly obtain the latest technology racing cars from the car factory and the top engineering team; in the 2022 season, six participating car factories including Yamaha, Ducati, Suzuki, Honda, KTM and Apulia have set up teams directly belonging to the car factory.
Independent fleet is what is commonly known as the "satellite team" or "private team". Instead of building racing cars on their own, these teams sign contracts with the car manufacturer and participate in the racing and related technologies (sometimes including drivers) through the signing of the car manufacturer. According to the regulations within the contract, some teams can gain competitiveness that is not far from the factory team.
