attracted attention from people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait

"Tuantuan" is a male panda among a pair of giant pandas given to Taiwan by mainland China. In December 2008, "Tuantuan" and "Yuanyuan" took a special plane to Taiwan. Since settling down at Taipei Zoo , "Tuantuan" and "Yuanyuan" have been loved by Taiwanese compatriots, especially Taiwanese children. With the joint efforts of experts from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, "Tuantuan" and "Yuanyuan" successfully gave birth to " Yuanzai " and "Yuanbao" in 2013 and 2020, respectively, forming a happy and fulfilling small family.
On August 30, 2022, "Tuantuan" and "Yuanyuan" just celebrated their 18th birthday, and Taipei Zoo also held a birthday celebration.
Dynamic development
In mid-to-late August this year, the giant panda "Tuantuan" developed epilepsy symptoms. On the morning of September 18, the results of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations showed that there was a local liquefaction necrotic lesion in the left cerebral hemisphere of the "Tuantuan", and similar lesions were also seen in the right cerebral hemisphere.
On October 16, "Tuantuan" began to experience hind limb weakness, decreased appetite, lying or lying to eat, and longer rest time. The results of the second MRI examination on the morning of the 22nd showed that the lesions of "Tuantuan" were significantly expanded, the course of the disease progressed rapidly, and the probability of suffering from malignant brain tumors was greatly increased. However, due to failure to perform invasive section examination, it is still impossible to confirm 100%.

Reference News Network quoted Taiwanese media reports that Taipei City Zoo released daily observation records of "Tuantuan" on October 24, showing that its bamboo feed intake was 6.6 kg, a significant decrease from the average of 12.33 kg in September; the defecation volume was 8.4 kg, which was also much lower than the average of 11.32 kg in September.

According to Taiwanese media reports, "Tuantuan" is currently "small and unable to walk normally."
Taiwan media reported that Taiwan Mainland Affairs Council spokesman Qiu Chuizheng revealed on October 27 that he had received a letter from the Taipei Municipal Government to apply to let mainland experts come to Taiwan to assist in the treatment of "Tuantuan". The Mainland Affairs Council will provide full assistance so that mainland experts can come to Taiwan to assist the park as soon as possible.
The mainland plans to select two experts to Taiwan

Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Ma Xiaoguang said on the 28th that after receiving an invitation letter from the Taipei Zoo for assistance on the afternoon of October 27, it plans to select two diagnosis and treatment and nursing experts to Taiwan to participate in the treatment and nursing work of the giant panda "tuantuan" for donation. Currently, the procedures for going to Taiwan are being handled with the assistance of relevant mainland parties.

Taipei City Zoo:
cannot estimate how long it will be left for life
decided to take pacifying treatment
According to the island media United News Network 1 October 28, on the morning of the same day, Taipei City Zoo held a "Tuantuan" condition briefing at the giant panda hall, with the animal group leader Wang Yimin and the veterinary department director Lai Yanxue explaining the specific situation. Lai Yanxue introduced that the condition of "Tuantuan" is still the same and there are no special problems. His weight is almost 121 kilograms this time. It is speculated that it may be because the garden party helped it inject the infusion, which made it in better health.
In response to the media's proposal whether the park will consider invasive treatment for "Tuantuan", Lai Yanxue said that "Tuantuan" is not suitable for active anesthesia, unless it is a medical behavior that is helpful to it. Judging from the current situation, it is not so suitable for radiation therapy or general tumor chemotherapy.
Lai Yanxue said that because the cause of the disease has not been determined yet, it is impossible to estimate how long the lifespan of "Tuantuan" is left. She explained that there are six major indicators for whether "Tuantuan" to live happily. The garden will evaluate the food, action, whether there is pain, and whether there is abnormal daily performance.
Previously, Lai Yanxue told the media on the afternoon of October 26 that after evaluation, anesthesia has a relatively high risk of "Tuantuan", so the medical team decided to take pleasurable treatment, similar to the peaceful treatment of humans. She hopes that "Tuantuan" will try to live every day as comfortably as possible with everyone's company.
