As a native of the Jing people, He Xiangying, who grew up in Jiangping Town, Dongxing City, is always full of love for the sea. "I have been with the sea since I was a child, and I have lived on the sea to eat, raking snails, catching shrimps, and fish. My mother went to the farmers' market to sell seafood and earned money to support our brothers and sisters to study. After graduating from university, He Xiangying chose to return to his hometown and join Fangchenggang Marine Bureau, becoming a member of Fangchenggang Marine Environment Monitoring and Forecasting Center. Since then, he embarked on the road of marine environmental monitoring and protecting the blue ocean.
At the beginning of the work, Fangchenggang Marine Environment Monitoring and Forecasting Center had just been established. The conditions were very simple, the laboratory was small, and there were few instruments. None of the four staff members had been engaged in marine environment monitoring. Faced with one after another, He Xiangying and his colleagues faced the difficulties and continued to strengthen their learning, practice and research. The difficulties were overcome one by one, and the marine environmental monitoring business was gradually from scratch.
"Ocean monitoring work requires not only to work hard to solve technical problems, but also to ride the wind and waves to go out to sea to operate." The weather at sea is changing, and when monitoring and sampling, it is often encountered with high winds and rains, and it is easy to experience seasickness of varying degrees, dizziness, nausea , vomiting, and the whole body is sore and weak. He Xiangying takes two or three days to recover slowly every time he is seasick. However, the samples have strict testing time limits. After taking samples, you must immediately return to the laboratory to race against time for sample filtration and laboratory testing and analysis. Through the joint efforts of He Xiangying's team, Fangchenggang Marine Environment Monitoring and Forecasting Center successfully passed the national laboratory qualification certification review and became the first municipal-level marine monitoring institutions to pass the national qualification certification review.
In 2012, due to outstanding work performance, He Xiangying began to serve as the head of the monitoring center. In order to improve the laboratory's testing capabilities and implement the marine sustainable development goals, He Xiangying led the team to re-plan the laboratory's capacity resources, and applied for more than 5 million yuan in capacity building funds from superiors to supplement and update the instruments and equipment. He also continuously enriched, improved and strengthened the construction of monitoring capacity in terms of testing raw materials, testing method basis, environmental conditions, etc., and continuously improved the level of monitoring automation using drones, marine ecological buoys and other equipment and systems. Under her leadership, the number of projects that have passed the qualification certification of Fangchenggang Marine Environment Monitoring and Forecasting Center has increased from 35 to 84 in 2021.
