The important core technology on mobile phones is chips. Before September 15, Huawei used a charter flight to transport 120 million chips from Taiwan. According to media reports, the chips equipped in the charter flight include not only 7 nanometers, but also 5 nanometer chips.
Under the influence of the United States, TSMC will face the problem of difficulty in supplying Huawei after September 15. Huawei once looked for Samsung to try to solve the problem of no enterprise foundry chips under the unlimited traceability mechanism in the United States. Even if Huawei proposed to exchange chips for the market, it did not end up in failure.
After September 15, Huawei will continue to design chips, but production will face challenges. The chip manufacturing process in the mainland market is mainly above 7 nanometers, and only at the 28 nanometer position can we get rid of the technological dependence on American companies. Without a reliable chip foundry company, even if Huawei can design mobile phone processors that surpass Qualcomm and Apple, it will not be able to turn the drawings into reality.
By 2021, 5G technology in the mainland market will be covered in most densely populated areas. At the same time, mobile phones closely related to 5G technology will also experience significant performance improvements in order to cope with the problem of increasing information processing pressure caused by the improvement of communication technology standards.
It can be predicted that in 2021, the domestic market will gradually phase out 14-nanometer chips. At the same time, the chips below 14-nanometer produced by TSMC will inevitably become the mainstream market demand. After losing TSMC's supply, Huawei will face the embarrassment of not having high-end chip suppliers, which will indirectly affect mobile phone production and may even force past models of mobile phones to be difficult to ship sufficiently to the market.
Just before September 15, Huawei actively transported 120 million chips from TSMC, but for the domestic market, it is still a drop in the bucket. In 2019, Huawei's mobile phone market sales exceeded 200 million units, and even in 2020, it will still be more than 150 million units. There are only 120 million processors, which is obviously a bit shabby.
In the past, Huawei has always paid great attention to the self-development of core technologies and actively designed mobile phone chips to replace its dependence on Qualcomm chips. Although it has made achievements in recent years, it has encountered bottlenecks in OEM production and is not easy to solve. This tells us that no matter how strong a company's technology and scientific research strength is, if it does not diversify when absorbing foreign supply chains, considering supply safety and over-reliance on a single company is a very dangerous thing. Once the other party catches fire, power outage, or natural disasters occur, it will directly cause great economic losses to the company.
