China Taiwan Network reported on July 23, according to Taiwan's "Central News Agency" citing " Nikkei Asia" report, people familiar with the matter said that TSMC plans to build its first wafer factory in Japan in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu. It is currently making a final decision. It will be put into production as soon as 2023, with a monthly output of 40,000 28-nanometer wafers, and is mainly supplied by Japanese Sony.
reported that the factory establishment plan is divided into two stages. Once all 2 stages are completed and put into production, the above production capacity will be achieved. The board of directors of TSMC is expected to make a final decision in the current quarter.
reports that several chips are commonly manufactured using 28nm technology, including image processors and microcontrollers for automotive applications and consumer electronics products.
report pointed out that the new factory is expected to mainly produce image sensors for TSMC's largest customer in Japan, Sony. TSMC does not rule out the cooperation with Sony to set up a factory. On the one hand, it gives Sony greater decision-making power in operation, and on the other hand, it can negotiate with the Japanese government.
Sony declined to comment on the news. TSMC reiterated that the French statement meeting on the 15th had been announced on the spot on the establishment of a wafer fab in Japan, and no further news has been announced. (China Taiwan Network Li Ning)
