The white-headed crane is also known as black crane and nun crane . It is gray all over, with white head and neck above the neck. The two wings are gray-black. It is a large wadering bird and is a national first-class key protected animal. Currently, there are only 6,000-15,000 remaining in the world. Mazhou Island is located in the main stream of the Yangtze River . In 2021, Jingjiang City and Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment jointly built the Yangtze River Biodiversity Conservation Scientific Observation and Research Station. This is also the second biodiversity observation station built in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Researcher Cao Mingchang, a researcher at the Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said: "Over the past year, after our investigation and observation, 203 bird species, 34 national key protected species, and the return of rare birds has shown that Jingjiang various biological habitats have been increasing, and the effectiveness of natural ecological protection in the Yangtze River has begun to show."

Nantong Rudong Dongling Reservoir and Fengli Coastal Wetland have also welcomed tens of thousands of wetland water birds .
