As many as 200,000 Sydney People gathered in the downtown commercial district last night to watch the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade to applaud the parades.
Nearly 200 teams of more than 12,600 people participated in the 42nd carnival parade mainly along Oxford Street. Many of them wore hot pants, rainbow skirts, and even half-naked upper body, wearing gold and silver glitter powder, singing and dancing, "showing" across the streets, catching all the eyes, attracting cheers, screams and whistles.
Among the parades, one of the most popular teams is a team composed of volunteers from the township fire department. They have been fighting for forest fire for several months since the beginning of the forest fire season. Some volunteers have even started firefighting operations on the forest fire front during Christmas and New Year. They have participated in last night's parade carnival as a supplementary celebration.
Although this carnival still becomes one of Sydney's annual events, the audience has dropped by one third this year from 300,000 last year. After the
parade, many people from all over the world and Australia continued to stay in the Oxford Street area for celebrations all night.
But just after 7 o'clock this morning, a knife-killing case occurred outside the famous Oxford Bar on Oxford Street. Several men stabbed on their bodies were sent to the hospital for treatment.
police confirmed the case had nothing to do with gay carnival, although it took place during the carnival for hours and outside a major carnival bar.
Police said the case appeared to involve two homeless people fighting for something and triggered violent clashes. The police are looking for the perpetrator.
