On July 16, 2010, Dalian Newport oil pipeline exploded. If the fire cannot be controlled, it will directly threaten Dalian not far away. The "July 16" Dalian oil pipeline explosion was the most difficult time to extinguish a fire in the crude oil pipeline storage tank explosion since the founding of New China. Although this disaster has passed nine years, everyone who has experienced the fire scene or witnessed the fire scene is still vivid in their minds and unforgettable.

On July 15, 2010, a 300,000-ton oil tanker from Liberian nationality unloaded 153,000 tons of crude oil imported from Venezuela in Dalian New Port. Because the hydrogen sulfide content of crude oil is high, the desulfurizing agent is injected into the channel of the oil pipeline.
During the filling process, the pressure in the oil pipeline is high, resulting in overpressure bubbling in many places of the filling hose and falling off at the connection, causing the desulfurizer to leak. After the filling of

According to statistics afterwards, 90,000 tons of crude oil leaked, polluting 50 square kilometers of sea surface.

Around 18:00 on July 16, 2010, Sister Han, who runs a convenience store in a small village in Dalian Development Zone, sat in the yard for a cool summer after dinner. Suddenly, there was a loud bang, exploding into the sky.
The explosion shocked Sister Han’s convenience store. The owner of the restaurant next door ran out of the house while shouting that “the earthquake had occurred”. But soon they discovered that it was not an earthquake, but an explosion in the canned area of the Xingang Pier not far away. It is only four or five kilometers away from Sister Han and the others there. After the
explosion, thick smoke suddenly rolled in the Newport Pier. At first, the smoke was white, but later it gradually turned black. At around 18:30, a second explosion occurred at the scene, and thick black smoke like mushroom clouds rose into the sky.
Since the explosion site is within the jurisdiction, the Dalian Fire Brigade Development Zone Brigade was the first to receive the alarm. "The person who called the police said that the pipeline in the tank area exploded and caught fire, directly threatening the 100,000 cubic meters of oil storage tank next to it." After hearing this, Wang Guo, the instructor of the Fortress Mountain Squadron of the Development Zone Brigade who received the call, was happy.Wang Guokai is very familiar with the oil depot of Dalian Newport Free Zone. Since its construction, it has been their key protective unit.
The oil depot of the bonded zone of Dalian Petroleum International Storage and Transportation Co., Ltd. where the accident occurred was divided into one and two phases, with a total reserve of 1.85 million cubic meters, with a total of 3 50,000 cubic meters of crude oil tanks and 17 100,000 cubic meters of crude oil tanks. The No. 103 tank that was on fire was one of them. On the north side is the soon-to-be-built National Oil Storage Company tank area, with a total of 30 crude oil tanks of 100,000 cubic meters; on the south side are residential areas, port units and office buildings, and on the east side is the Dalian Port Tank Area with a total reserve of 1.324,500 cubic meters, with 12 crude oil tanks of 100,000 cubic meters. What's more, there are 51 storage tanks that store flammable, explosive and toxic chemical raw materials such as toluene, xylene, , etc.
The fire was first caused by the explosion of the 900mm oil pipeline on the north side of the No. 103 tank, and then instantly detonated the parallel 700mm pipeline. The crude oil ejected from two pipes with a diameter of nearly 1 meter with flames. The No. 103 tank next to them quickly caught fire.
At that time, on the north side of Tank No. 103 was the soon-to-be-built national oil storage tank area, with a total of 30 100,000 cubic meters of crude oil tanks; on the south side were port units and office buildings and other annexes; on the east side was Dalian Port Nanhai Tank Area with a total reserve of 1.32 million cubic meters, with 12 100,000 cubic meters of crude oil tanks and 51 storage tanks that store flammable, explosive and toxic chemical raw materials such as toluene and xylene.
If the explosion causes a chain reaction, it will be very terrible: a 100,000 square meter oil storage tank explodes, and other oil storage tanks close to each other will explode one after another; if one of the 51 xylene tanks on the east side explodes, the firefighters who extinguish the fire at the scene will be poisoned and killed; once the poison gas floats to the city of Dalian 25 kilometers away, the entire city will become a dead city.
On-site commander-in-chief and then director of the Liaoning Provincial Public Security Department, Li Wenxi, said afterwards that the firefighters were extinguishing fires in explosive barrels at that time, "I ordered with tears in my eyes." He knew that if the firefight was not saved in time and another oil tank was ignited, the city of Dalian, 25 kilometers behind it, would be seriously affected and the lives of millions of people would be threatened.
"You don't know them too much!"
At about 8 pm, more than 2,000 firefighters from the fire brigade in Liaoning Province arrived. They were facing a fire scene that was burning like a purgatory on earth.
The continuous stream of crude oil spews out of the pipeline line, and wherever it flows, it is a sea of fire. When the firefighters arrived, more than 500 square meters of ground flowing fire had formed on the site. Surrounded by flames, poisonous smoke and black rain, firefighters must complete the task of "making every effort to extinguish the flowing fire, actively cool the No. 103 Can, and ensure the safety of the adjacent tank area."
In order to prevent the explosion of Can 103 from igniting other tanks, the first task of firefighters is to extinguish the fire in the tank. However, the oil and gas in the oil pipeline are mixed and the pressure is also high. The flames of the No. 103 tank, dozens of meters high, were shocked by Wang Guokai, who had more than ten years of firefighting scene experience. This was the most terrifying scene he had ever seen.
The densely packed oil pipelines on the ground connect dozens of oil storage tanks in series. The hot crude oil was surging underground, bubbling like boiling porridge. The high temperature caused the crude oil to explode several times in succession, and the manhole covers on the road were blown up all over the sky. The ground was originally poured with asphalt, but after being roasted by a large fire, it became a soft "sweptland". Every time the firefighters took a step forward, their feet were like shot put hanging. In this way, while avoiding the unexpected manhole cover, they shouted slogans and carried water belts, pushing the position forward bit by bit.
"We're just 'changed'"
18:19, three squadrons under the Development Zone Brigade of Dalian Fire Brigade - Dagushan Squadron, Haiqing Squadron and Fortress Mountain Squadron - arrived at the fire scene one after another. At this time, the fire brigade of the Dalian Port Group Oil Terminal Company, who arrived first, had no power to fight back against the fierce flames.
But what they unexpectedly expected was that the wall of Can 103 became soft and almost folded after an hour of burning fire.At this time, Li Yongfeng, the captain of the development zone brigade, suddenly discovered that the oil in the crude oil pump room on the east side of the No. 103 tank, was "squeaking", and the original red fire suddenly turned white, and the oil pipeline was moving back and forth. Years of experience told him that the oil pump room was about to explode. He immediately shouted on the walkie-talkie, "Get away now!" Just as the firefighters ran out more than ten meters away, the oil pump room behind him exploded. The stainless steel water guns and water cannons they had not had time to take instantly turned into ashes.
Crude oil gushed out, and the newly extinguished fire was ignited again in a blink of an eye. If the crude oil leakage is not cut off, once the oil storage tanks 101 to 106 next to Can 103 are ignited, the fire will be out of control. Therefore, closing the valves of these oil tanks becomes the only way to extinguish the fire.
However, after the oil tank area exploded, the power in the fire scene was completely cut off. The valves that could be closed in 3 minutes could only be manually closed by the firefighters.
In "Heroes of Fire", the fire commander played by Hou Yong sent a group of 7 "successful death squads" to the fire scene to close the valves. At that time, his words "I am a party member, if you have brothers at home, you can take a step forward" were also based on real interviews.
In the video, the person in charge of the oil tank area said at the beginning that the valve could be turned off after about 15 minutes of rotation, but Huang Xiaoming and his teammates had been turned on for more than 15 minutes, but the valve had not been closed yet. At this time, the person in charge said that each valve must be turned 8,000 times before it can be closed. The angry Hou Yong slapped the person in charge of the oil tank area and said, "You don't know much about the firefighters."

In fact, a valve at the Dalian Xingang fire scene had to be turned 80,000 times before it could be closed! And one oil tank has two valves! After hearing the actual situation, the instructor directly called the person in charge.
No one has tried to manually close the valve before this, let alone firefighters operate manually near oil tanks that may explode at any time. After receiving the order, Sang Wu, the squadron leader of the special service squadron of the Dalian Detachment, led two soldiers into the fire.
They have burning fires under their feet and thick black smoke on their heads. In order to speed up, Sang Wu and others removed the ventilator that had dozens of kilograms on their bodies, took off their gloves, and turned on the hot valve with bare hands; their hands were worn out and they didn't have any strength, so they found a stick to continue spinning. The firefighters entered the fire from around 20 o'clock on the 16th, without dripping water and grains of rice, and fought with the valve with bare hands for more than 8 hours. It was not until 4:30 am the next day that the four valves of Tank No. 102 and Tank No. 106 were finally closed, and the fire showed signs of slowing down.

valve was closed, the power generator transferred from Dalian power supply company also arrived, and the valves of tanks 101, 104 and 105 were quickly closed after power was turned on. At this time, the fire had been burning for 11 hours.
Remote seawater
At 10 a.m. on the 17th, the Dalian Municipal Government held a press conference to announce that all valves of the oil storage tank at the explosion site of the Dalian Xingang oil pipeline were closed and the fire was basically extinguished.
Shao Tianfu explained that the fire was controlled and the threat of the flowing fire was extinguished, and the surrounding oil storage tanks and toxic chemical tanks were also lifted. The 103 tanks on fire formed a stable combustion and would no longer threaten other oil tanks.
At this time, the north side of the 22-meter-high 103 canister had collapsed to only 3 meters above the ground, and the oil in the tank was still burning. It’s not a solution to keep it burning like this! Shao Tianfu planned how to put out the 103 cans of fire.
"There is a circle of foam generator on the top of canister No. 103. If the oil tank catches fire, the foam generator can pour foam into it to put out the fire." Wang Guokai, who accompanied the reporter to interview at the scene, pointed to the 103 cans that had been burned and told the reporter. But after the fire broke out, the tank area and the foam generator became a decoration.
At that time, Shao Tianfu first thought about whether he could connect the foam pipes to these foam generators and pour foam into it to extinguish the fire. But he found that the collapsed part of the 103 can was folded back and was just covered on the oily surface at the bottom of the can, and the foam could not be punched into the can. Helpless, I had to find another way out.
"Can 103 is a floating roof can, which means that the top of the tank can float up and down according to the amount of oil in the tank. Can firefighters stand on the top of the tank and directly froth into the tank?" Shao Tianfu explained to reporters using the lid of the teacup as a prop.
Shao Tianfu's plan surprised the reporter. There was a burning oil tank under his feet, and the oil tank was filled with boiling crude oil. People had to stand on the oil tank to put out the fire. Thinking about this scene, it was frightening, but Zheng Chunsheng really led four attack teams and climbed onto the floating roof of Can 103 on a ladder.
"The 103 can has been burned for more than ten hours. We don't know if the floating roof has been burned soft. If people go up and the floating roof collapses, there is no way to save it." Zheng Chunsheng and the others climbed up the ladder and did some experiments first to confirm that the floating roof could withstand it before climbing up slowly. The team members held four foam cannons and kept filling the cans with foam through the gaps.
Several hours have passed, and the fire is immortal. Shao Tianfu, who was commanding the battle, couldn't sit still anymore. "I asked them to stop foaming into the can and all came down. At that time, the water and foam were in a hurry. If other places rekindled, we would be passive." The can of
103 was still burning. It seemed that the fire could only be stopped when the remaining oil in the can was exhausted. But the can area is full of flammable and explosive substances, and even a little spark may cause a fire again. It is too risky to wait for the 103 cans to be extinguished by themselves. At this time, Shao Tianfu thought of another way - to get water. "Watering the foam generator through the initiation, water is poured into it. The water will squeeze out the air to a certain extent. Will the fire be extinguished naturally?"
The reason why Shao Tianfu could think of the trick of irrigation is that the Dalian Fire Brigade has the only remote water supply system in the country. Zheng Chunsheng told reporters that the remote water supply system can continuously pump water from the sea 6 kilometers away to supply fire. An ordinary fire truck can only hold 20 tons of water at most, and the remote water supply system can pump 18,000 liters of water per minute. "This is the first time that the remote water supply system has been applied to actual combat, and it has indeed played a great role," said Zheng Chunsheng.
Water continuously pumped from the sea and poured into tank No. 103. Shao Tianfu was surprised to find that the fire was gradually extinguished. Just when victory was in sight, a tragedy happened - Zhang Liang, the captain of the remote water supply formation of the Dalian Detachment Combat Support Brigade, died.
Shao Tianfu said that the floating boat pump of the remote water supply system could automatically pump water when thrown at sea, but crude oil leaked into the sea, and the surrounding seaweed debris, the floating boat pump was blocked in a while. Although the soldiers of the water supply formation borrowed fishing nets from local fishermen and filtered debris around the floating boat pump, the suction force of the floating boat pump was too strong, and the oil and algae blocked the water inlet in a while. Zhang Liang and the others had to go into the water to clean up debris every once in a while. The tragedy happened like this...
In the end, with the cooperation of many places in the field of assistance, sea, land and air to extinguish fires at the same time, after nearly 15 hours of firefighting, the fire in the oil depot was basically extinguished, and the remaining storage tanks did not cause any damage, and no casualties were found in the public.
