Introduction: Recently, Warren East, CEO of Rolls-Royce , said that the company has submitted a proposal to Boeing 's new intermediate market passenger aircraft (nicknamed Boeing 797). According to an insider, Rolls-Royce submitted an UltraFan engine. "They will continue to improve their requirements, and we will continue to see if we can meet these requirements economically."
East did not specify which engine design Rolls-Royce submitted. When asked whether the submission included UltraFan, a Rolls-Royce spokesperson declined to comment.
Competitor CFM International has submitted a CFM LEAP engine plan for the passenger aircraft, but the power requirements of the new Boeing passenger aircraft may exceed the thrust range of the LEAP engine.
"Intermediate Market" new passenger aircraft concept was proposed in 2016. Boeing hopes to have a natural transition product between Boeing 737 and Boeing 787, between narrow body and wide body, and replace Boeing 757 and 767 around 2025. This type of passenger aircraft is expected to require an engine with 40,000 pounds-50,000 pounds of thrust, while the maximum take-off thrust of LEAP engine is around 35,000 pounds.
However, although Boeing requires major engine manufacturers to submit engine bids earlier this month, Boeing is still hesitating whether to really do this type of passenger plane, but it is clear that it will decide whether to continue or shelve the project before the end of next year. Many industry analysts question whether Boeing can really achieve the economy of a single-aisle passenger aircraft with a commercial case of dual-aisle passenger aircraft, which will accommodate 220 to 260 passengers.
Boeing aims to put the new passenger plane into service in 2025, and Rolls-Royce’s plan is to put the UltraFan engine into service in 2025, and the engine ground interview is expected to begin in 2021.
