The University of Hong Kong announced on June 19th that the president-elect Zhang Xiang will take office on July 17th and officially start a five-year term.

Zhang Xiang was appointed as the 16th principal of the University of Hong Kong in December last year, replacing the early resignation of Ma Feisen . Ma Feisen resigned at the beginning of this year. Chief Vice President Tan Guangheng has been the acting principal for nearly half a year, but there has been no news of Zhang Xiang taking office.

Zhang Xiang was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province and graduated from Department of Physics, Nanjing University. He later went to the United States to study. In 1996, he received a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. He was successively elected as an academician of the National Academy of Engineering and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
