Red Army soldiers walking out of Ya'an Zhongli

Zhongli District, Ya'an County, Sichuan Province (now Zhongli Town, Yucheng District, Ya'an City) is an old revolutionary base. The Red Army had fought fierce battles with the Kuomintang reactionaries here and established a Soviet regime. Hundreds of people joined the Red Army from here.

In August 1987, I was transferred to the Zhongli District Committee of Ya'an County to work.

Zhongli District governs three townships: Shangli, Zhongli and Xiali. When the Red Army arrived in Zhongli, the names of Shangli were Wujiakou, Zhongli were Luoshengdang, and Xiali were called Louziping. I have loved history since I was a child. When I was in middle school, I studied the history of the Party and the Long March of the Red Army.

As soon as I entered the gorge of Zhonglijie, I secretly admired the Red Army's address: a single road with cliffs on both sides. Under the deep riverbed is the surging Longxi River. The pass is a narrow single road. The terrain of a man who is in danger of being open to thousands of men, I can't help but respect the Red Army. When I reported to the district committee, a plaque suddenly came into my eyes: "Ya'an County Soviet Government", which immediately brought me into the historical environment of the old revolutionary base area.

At the district committee, I proposed: The history of the old district in Zhongli is very precious. We should set up an exhibition hall to collect the remains of the Red Army in Zhongli, collect information about soldiers who went out from Zhongli to participate in the Red Army, collect photos of officers awarded titles in 1955, and expand and print them out and hang them in the exhibition hall. Yang Shuzhen, the mayor of

, was very happy to see that I like to study the history of the Red Army. He said that he had special feelings for the Red Army. He was a local and was born in the year of the Red Army in Zhongli. He himself participated in the People's Liberation Army of China and had a deep relationship with the Red Army. He had historical information about the Red Army to the three townships of Zhongli, which was extremely rich. He said, I will take you to the places where the Red Army has been stationed and where they have fought to see it tomorrow. There are many ruins of the Red Army here, and everyone here knows it. When it comes to the battle story between the Red Army and Chiang Kai-shek's army on November 23, 1935, they know it as much.

The next day, District Mayor Yang Shuzhen took me to his house first. He joined the army at the age of 18, transferred to his job and returned to his hometown, where he served as the Party Secretary of Shangli Commune (Wujiakou). Along the way, he began to introduce the slogans of the Red Army carvings. At the entrance of the court, he saw Wujiakou surrounded by two rivers, a small stone bridge entered the town, and the walls on both sides of the entrance were made of stone. In order to promote the anti-Japanese war, the Red Army carved many slogans on the wall. He told me: Any slogan signed by the Political Department represents a division. Sure enough, I saw slogans such as "Tianguang Political Department", "Decheng Political Department", "Serious Political Department", and "Chong'an Political Department".

slogans are engraved on the exterior wall, some are engraved on the ziku Tower, some are engraved on the tombstone, some are engraved on the stone bridge, anyway, some are engraved on the places where there are stones and words can be engraved. This shows the Red Army's determination to promote the Communist Party's political propositions at that time. It is very difficult to carve letters on stones, not to mention carve wherever you go. Along the way, you can see stone carvings of "destroying the traitors", "destroying Chiang Kai-shek", and "100,000, Chiang Kai-shek wants to betray China". The most eye-catching stone slogan "The Red Army is the army of the poor". Each character is more than one foot large, and the font is vigorous and powerful. It can be seen that the Red Army who wrote is very skilled.

It is said that Lianhua Mountain is a relatively big battle, so District Mayor Yang Shuzhen took me to Lianhua Mountain in Zhongli to see it. Lianhua Mountain is the junction of Mengding Mountain in Ya'an County and Mingshan County (Mingshan District, Ya'an City). He said that in Zhongli, this was the largest battle between the Red Army and the Kuomintang army. There were many people on both sides of the battle. The Red Army built trenches for several days and nights here, because the Kuomintang army got a bargain at Baizhang Pass. In order to preserve its strength, the Red Army took the initiative to retreat to Lianhua Mountain and Mengding Mountain. The mountains here are high and dense forests and the terrain is dangerous, which can effectively block the attack of the Kuomintang army. The 274th Regiment of the 93rd Division of the Red Army was responsible for blocking the enemy and fought fiercely with the Kuomintang army. The enemy had planes and cannons, and the Red Army relied on tenacious will. The battle lasted until the evening. The Red Army repelled several enemy attacks, killed hundreds of enemies, defeated the Kuomintang army, and covered the retreat of the main force.

The Red Army repelled several enemy attacks, killed hundreds of enemies, defeated the Kuomintang army, and covered the retreat of the main force. When the Red Army retreated, the bodies of the sacrificed Red Army soldiers (the Red Army also sacrificed hundreds of people) were buried in the trenches of Daya Mountain.

Although decades have passed since this battle, now we cannot hear the sound of gunfire or the smell of gunfire. The mountains are full of pines and cypresses, and lush, and a few of us still find the trenches dug by the Red Army in the thorns. The trench is more than one meter deep, with a lot of gravel inside, and the walls are relatively solid.

When we saw the trenches, we were extremely excited. This is a testimony of history. It silently tells us: the Red Army soldiers of that year fought bloody battles in these mountains and ridges for national liberation and for our present. They wrote tragic poems here. Their bodies are forever buried on Lotus Mountain, and their heroic spirits seem to see our happy life today in the sky above Lotus Mountain!

Today, we are enjoying the beautiful sunshine of the new era. We should promote them, remember them, and never forget them!

We have collected the historical materials of the old Red Army who have been alive so far.

Liu Chaozuo participated in the Red Army from Zhongli in September 1935, and participated in the battles of the Hundred Regiments, the May Mobilization of the Japanese invaders, the Three Downs to Jiangnan, the Liaoshen Campaign, the Pingjin Campaign and the Liberation of Guanxi. He has served as regiment commander, chief of military staff, deputy chief of staff of the Guangzhou Military Region Logistics and Transportation Department, and is at the level of a military officer and has the rank of major general.

1955 won the third-level August 1st Medal, the third-level Independence and Freedom Medal, the third-level Liberation Medal, and the second-level Red Star Medal in 1988. He has served as an advisor to the Guangzhou Military Region.

1936 was injured by enemy shells in Yajiang. In 1949, Xi'an Shilipu was crushed and injured in many battles. He was rated as a third-class A-level revolutionary disabled soldier.

was once the chief guard of the central government. He was awarded the rank of major in 1955. He was once the chief of the General Affairs Section of the Armored Forces Command and the director of the guesthouse.

Old Red Army Yang Yongwen was awarded the rank of major in 1955

Yang Yongming was from Zhongli, Ya'an. He joined the Red Army in 1935. The 385th Brigade served as platoon leader, a member of the Yan'an Anti-Japanese University, and the director of the vault of the three specialized departments of the Jiangsu, Henan and Anhui. He was brave and tenacious in the War of Resistance, and won three medals, three times in the War of Liberation. After the founding of New China, he was transferred to local work, with an administrative level of 12, and a local division level.

The information I have collected is also: Wu Fuxing, who worked at the Tianjin Light Industry Bureau after the founding of the People's Republic of China; Liu Chaowen and Yang Yongchang, who worked at the Chongqing Iron and Steel Company after the founding of the People's Republic of China; Zheng Jiaping, who worked at the Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Commission after the founding of the People's Republic of China; Zhang Zaifu and Wu Guoxing, who worked at the Yunnan Film Company after the founding of the People's Republic of China; Chen Wengao, who died in fighting against the enemy.

Materials written by the family of Martyr Chen Wengao who died after joining the Red Army from Ya'an Zhongli (collected by Luo Kaihua)

There are also local meritorious personnel who have contributed to the Red Army: for example, in 1935, the Red Army established the Ya'an County Soviet regime in the Wangjia Courtyard of Zhongli, Ya'an County, Lu Lunzhi served as the chairman of Ya'an County, Hou Guomin and Peng Aiguang served as vice chairman; Zhang Shunwu served as the chairman of Zhonglichang (township government) Soviet, and Yang Zhengguo served as vice chairman. During the Kuomintang's rule, they served as the leader of the regime organized by the Communist Party and the Red Army, led the farmers to divide the fields and land, criticized and fought against landlords and bullies, and raised food, vegetables and other supplies for the Red Army, which was risking their lives, so they made an indelible contribution!

On April 6, 2022, the Party History Office of Yucheng District, Ya'an City and the Yucheng District Old Promotion Association held a meeting of lecturers and researchers. At the meeting, I met He Guobin (Secretary of the Party Branch of Zhongli Village) from the old revolutionary base area and Comrade Luo Kaihua who worked in the district. Old friends met very kindly. We met decades ago, and Luo Kaihua was still the same. He Guobin was still a child in his 10s at that time, but I still remember his appearance. When we talked about the battle at Lianhua Mountain in Zhongli, they knew it as they knew it. The Red Army retreated to the front line of Lianhua Mountain and Mengding Mountain to block the enemy. The blood of the Red Army dyed this hot land red. Although decades have passed, local people are still passing it on word of mouth.

There is a spirit at the foot of Mengding Mountain that should cry sadly, and Lianhua Mountain is fortunate to roar to the sky: Brothers of the Red Army, your blood has not flowed in vain. Since 1935, you have experienced the 25,000-mile Long March, the bloody War of Resistance Against Japan, and the War of Liberation with guns and bullets, the Communist Party of China has won, and the People's Republic of China has been founded!

There were 672 people participating in the Red Army from Zhongli District, Ya'an County (this is the number I personally found at the Civil Affairs Bureau of Ya'an County. Local people said that there are still many names that were not found). They all made great contributions to the Chinese revolution!
