On the afternoon of October 13, TSMC (TSM.US) released its third quarter performance report. The company achieved sales revenue of NT$613.14 billion in the third quarter of NT$5 NT$613.14 billion in (estimated NT$604.52 billion), a year-on-year increase of 47.9% and a month-on-month increase of 14.8%; net profit of NT$280.9 billion in the same period (estimated NT$264.66 billion). TSMC said that benefited from the depreciation of NTD , driving the company's actual growth slightly better than expected .


In addition, in terms of profit margin, TSMC's gross profit margin in the third quarter was 60.4% (estimated 58.9%), operating profit margin was 50.6%, and net profit margin was 45.8%.


In terms of process, TSMC's 5nm process wafer shipments accounted for 28% of the company's revenue in the third quarter, and 7nm process wafer shipments accounted for 26% of the company's revenue. In Q2 2022, the revenue of 5nm and 7nm process accounts for about 21% and 30% of , respectively; the total revenue of advanced processes (7nm and more advanced processes) reached 54%, which continued to expand compared with 51% of the revenue in the previous quarter.


Previously, the market speculated that TSMC's 5nm process revenue would exceed 7nm process in the second quarter, but this speculation was not realized in the second quarter. However, with the increase in the shipment volume of 5nm process in the third quarter, this advanced process process, , finally replaced its 7nm process and became the largest source of revenue after two years of mass production.


Regarding the more advanced process production time point, TSMC said that 3nm chips will be mass-produced later this quarter, and customers' chip demand for 3nm process exceeds the supply.


: According to business types, the company's smartphone business grew rapidly, with revenue accounting for 41%, a year-on-year increase of 25%; the revenue share of high-performance computing (HPC) business reached 39% in the third quarter; the automotive chip business and the Internet of Things business also grew rapidly, with revenue accounting for 5% and 10% respectively, among which the Internet of Things business grew the fastest, with revenue growth of about 33% year-on-year.


At the legal talks held on Thursday afternoon, TSMC President Wei Zhejia said that due to insufficient demand for smartphones and PCs, delays in customer products, and the combination of many other adverse factors, the overall industry is weak, and TSMC's capacity utilization rate will also decline from the fourth quarter of this year to the first half of next year. It is expected to return to normal in the second half of next year and resume growth momentum, and grow faster than this year.


TSMC expects sales in the fourth quarter to be US$19.9 billion to US$20.7 billion; gross profit margin during the same period was about 59.5% to 61.5%, and market estimates were 57.9%; overall operating profit rate in the fourth quarter was about 49% to 51%, and market estimates were 47%.
