On December 28, 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government did a major event: purchased the domestic software Hongqi Linux in the office system procurement, kicking Microsoft out.

At 15:47 on January 15, 2002, a Boeing 767 landed on Beijing Capital Airport . A big man walked down the gangway and got into a car in Microsoft China.

In the next few days, he will "take" Beijing and "take" the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

["If you don't want to do it, don't do it"]

Microsoft in 2001 can be summarized in four words: is so powerful.

Three years ago, the US Department of Justice jointly launched monopoly accusations against Microsoft. This largest antitrust case in the United States in the 20th century was fought for three years, and the stick was swung very high, but it fell on its butt soft: Microsoft did not need to split it, it only needed to pay $1.8 billion in settlement funds.

For Microsoft, which had revenue of US$25.3 billion in fiscal year 2001, only a few hairs were pulled out for US$1.8 billion, and its monopoly can continue. The industry has a comment on this: the only thing that can bring Microsoft down now is suicide.

In the Chinese market, Microsoft is also in the limelight. In Shanghai, it signed an order of more than 70 million yuan. By December, in order to improve informatization, the Beijing Municipal Government was preparing to purchase a batch of office software. Faced with the tender, Microsoft China President Gao Qunyao has one attitude: makes money while standing.

The solution proposed by Microsoft is even more overlord than Chu Bawang. First, the Windows XP system is not discounted; second, although there are loopholes in the XP system, you can repair it and move forward together; third, if you want to buy the system, you must buy Office software together, otherwise the price will increase.

It is said that when I saw Microsoft's plan, officials in Beijing almost slapped the table. The leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology went to Microsoft to coordinate, and finally could only say helplessly to the purchasing staff: "You can do it."

But the Beijing Municipal Government is not the US Department of Justice. Microsoft encountered a real opponent this time, Yu Cisheng, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission.

Although Yu Cisheng's name is very quiet, he is not kind or soft at all when he takes action - Since he doesn't want to do business well, then don't do it.

This attitude is not considered as a big bullying store. In some departments that are related to national economy and people's livelihood and national security, the source code of the software must be registered. In addition to the reason, she also gave room for maneuver: "If Microsoft does not agree, it will lose the order. This is our power."

The arrogant Microsoft naturally rejected this proposal.

On December 28, the Beijing Municipal Government, who could not wait, officially announced the procurement plan. The domestic system Hongqi Linux won the bid, but Microsoft's particles were not collected.

From being full of confidence to being cold, Microsoft China has never expected this result. In desperation, a big trick was made: the engineer and the marketing department worked overnight and wrote a 35,000-word report.

This 30,000-word long article is more of a demonstration than a report. In the report, Microsoft not only attacked Beijing to purchase a batch of "low-energy software", but also raised 60 questions in one go, criticizing the non-compliance of bidding, accusing Linux of open source public general licenses as a virus, and acted like a battle of three hundred rounds.

The Beijing Times has a comment, this is Microsoft's top sixty boards. But the Beijing Municipal Government resolved these 60 boards in just one move: Ignore them.

For more than ten days, Microsoft China was determined to hold on, and the phone ringtone of the Public Relations Department could not stop. Facing all the media, Microsoft held a firm attitude: never admit defeat, and must turn this matter over.

In mid-January, Microsoft China, which lost orders and was embarrassed, could finally not bear it, so it had to ask for help from the headquarters. So, on that gray afternoon on January 15, Crieg Mondy, a member of the National Security Communications Commission and Microsoft's No. 3 person, came to Beijing.

[Red Flag Scrolls the West Wind]

Seven or eight years before the outbreak of the "Beijing Procurement Case", Microsoft's operating system swept the world, including China.

In 1995, there was a software market analysis report. After examining the advantages of Microsoft's products and the difficulties of domestic software companies, it made a tragic cry:

Microsoft has done all of , what do we do?

The author of this report was the general manager of Kingsoft Software at that time. Many years later, he still has a title: Founder of Xiaomi.

Lei Jun talks about the truth, from the first-ranked MS-DOS to the Windows 3.0 that crosses the era, from the "product people desire most", Windows 95, to the supporting Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office software. Microsoft relies on its strong technology and extensive business ecosystem to cover the domestic software industry in all aspects.

In the context of insufficient self-development capabilities, "what to do" seems to be a difficult problem, but it only temporarily stumped the Chinese. Everyone soon discovered that making application software around the Windows ecosystem is like a good idea of "others eat meat, we drink soup."

The media also added fuel to the fire: "What reason do we have to stick to the principle of confrontation? Why can't we use our strengths to develop and strengthen ourselves with the reputation and strength of international companies?"

So, from Kingsoft Pangu office suite to Hanwang handwriting technology, Jiangmin antivirus software... But this "accompanying the giants" route looks colorful, but in essence it is to make up for the shortcomings. Especially when the "giant" raises his foot, he can kick the vendors around him cleanly - Han Wang has authorized Microsoft Chinese handwriting technology, and Microsoft turned around and made a set in Windows2000.

In the three years after Lei Jun shouted "What do we do", the domestic IT industry lost not only orally, but also convinced. A reader of the Computer Newspaper is familiar with the history of the Chinese revolution and angrily denounced the IT industry from "left-leaning opportunism" to "right-leaning surrenderism." The netizens on the Sitonglifang Forum have better literary talent. With a sentence like "Looking at the sight of everything, my heart is confused", I describe the entire business model clearly.

But a series of major events that happened after 1998 rekindled the fire in the hearts of Chinese IT people.

In 1998, France's Le Figaro published a report, pointing out that the intelligence network "Five Eyes Alliance" established by the United States in the late 1950s used the Windows operating system to steal European economic information and intelligence, so that the French company Thomson 's bidding plan was stolen by American companies, and a $13 million contract was lost; Airbus was also snatched away by Boeing due to commercial intelligence leaks.

This report is somewhat of a bit like "Currency War", but it successfully aroused domestic speculation about whether there is a backdoor for Microsoft system. During the Yugoslavia War that broke out in 1999, the United States used information warfare to invade the Southern Army system, causing its equipment to fail, which further amplified domestic concerns about system security.

Xu Guanhua, then Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, also stood up on behalf of the government, exploring China's dangers in independent intellectual property rights. That speech left behind four of the most famous words in the future: lacks core and soul.

From the survival of the software industry to the national security, the whole world seems to be strangled by Microsoft's throat. Coupled with the monopoly accusations of the US Department of Justice, the national eastward trend of "China Can Say No" crushes Microsoft, and it seems that it is just the last straw.

The Chinese IT industry has found this straw, which seems to be able to leverage the Microsoft core of Windows operating system. The name of the straw is called the Linux system.

This is an operating system born in Finland in 1991. Its biggest feature is its open source code and no copyright.

If the Microsoft system is a restaurant, then its users can only passively obtain services and cannot get close to the "back kitchen". Linux is more like an open kitchen where anyone can cook it by themselves, and even the recipes are mastered by themselves.

This independent and controllable development environment allows developers to bypass Microsoft's "X86+Windows" camp.

Linux's entry into China is attributed to a man named Gong Min. He was originally a researcher in the field of remote sensing satellite . While studying in Finland, he was very concerned about some areas outside of his major. During an academic exchange, Gong Min listened to the topic of "Why did Linux come into being in Finland" and immediately came up with an idea: China should also have good things like .

In the summer of 1994, Gong Min, who returned to China to visit relatives, brought the Linux system back to China with 20 disks.

The introduction of Linux has aroused great interest from both the official and private sides of China. In the temple, there were encouragement from Hu Yizhi, the Ministry of Materials and Gao Xinmin, the National Information Center. In the world, there were encouragement from , academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ni Guangnan, deputy director of the Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and scientists , Yuan Meng, and others. The core idea is one: I hope China will seize the opportunity of Linux.

By taking advantage of this east wind, domestic companies that make Linux systems have made their mark in the temple and the world. The private Xteam and Blue Dot, and the national team-born Chinese soft and Hongqi , form the four kings of China's Linux.

On December 28, 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government did a major event: in the procurement of office system, it purchased the domestic software Hongqi Linux and kicked Microsoft out. - DayDayNews

In Beijing, Xteam made its first set of Chinese Linux in China. In Shenzhen, Blue Dot gathered a group of the earliest geeks in China. Several young men in their 20s chose the company address at Seg Technology Park and chose Penguin as their company logo. Upstairs, there is another company that uses penguins as its logo: Tencent .

On National Day in 1999, Blue Dot made its own Linux 1.0. Taking advantage of the Internet boom in 2000, the company entered the US stock market half a year after its establishment. The stock price of opened and soared on the day of 's opening, with a market value of more than US$400 million. At this time, the company's employees were less than 15. " Sanlian Life Weekly " wrote a special report, with the title "Little Imperials", so that Brother Ma, who was still very young at the time, was envious and secretly decided to surpass the blue dot.

Although the "Four Heavenly Kings" are all in the limelight, the one who really stands on the high ground of the national operating system is still the "red flag".

Compared with the blue dot, Hongqi Linux is obviously more rooted. Under the call of "loss of core and soul", scientists in the system came to the front and shouldered the important task. Hu Weiwu of the Institute of Computing Science and Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is responsible for Zhongke Loongson, while Sun Yufang, deputy director of of the software institute, became Hongqi's "leader".

Three years of hard work in R&D, the "Red Flag" Linux was finally released in 1999. Half a year later, the Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Lianchuang jointly established the Zhongke Hongqian with a 6:4 investment.

Although its compatibility with Microsoft Office is very poor, sometimes historical documents cannot be opened. But from the Hongqi team to the media, everyone is still very happy: the Chinese finally have their own operating system. The name Red Flag, when read, expresses national expectations - like the revolutionary red flags planted all over the mountains and rivers, spreads all over the Chinese computers.

Sun Yufang, who studied in the Department of Mathematical Forces of Peking University in the red era, even quoted a poem by Chairman Mao: The red flag swept the west wind.

What a saying "The red flag swept through the west wind". One year after the establishment of Zhongke Red Flag, the Beijing Municipal Government launched a procurement bidding. The time for "the long tassel in hand is bound by the blue dragon" has arrived.

   [Fighting Beijing]

The day after Mondi arrived in Beijing, the real battle began.

On December 28, 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government did a major event: in the procurement of office system, it purchased the domestic software Hongqi Linux and kicked Microsoft out. - DayDayNews

On the afternoon of January 16, 2002, Beijing Times reporter Pi Jun rushed to Wangfu Hotel . This is the signing event site for Microsoft and Zhongguancun Software. After the ceremony, he and CCTV booked an exclusive interview with Crieg Mondy.

At 15:30, the door to the conference hall on the second floor opened and the reporter rushed forward. But Microsoft's senior media managers pushed away the reporter like bodyguards, protecting Mondy, who was nearly 190cm, quickly walked towards the gate. A Microsoft employee announced loudly: The interview was cancelled.

Although I was surprised, Pi Jun still seized the opportunity to go down the stairs and shot out the problem like a cannon. There is only one topic: Does what you said count?

Pi Jun only received five NOs.

However, everyone has not forgotten what Mondy said half a year ago.

At the World Public Source Code Conference on July 26 last year, Microsoft Senior Vice President Crieg Mondy made a warm speech and publicly stated four principles: Today's world is an era of choice, and choosing any software is a rational choice. Microsoft's senior leaders promised not to call "public general license" cancer, which will be an iron discipline for Microsoft.

This is probably a bigger backlash than a dove that puts on the media.

A hour later, Krieg Mondy appeared in the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Behind him are the president of Greater China, the president of China, and all Chinese officials who are worthy of VP titles.

The Ministry of Science and Technology also set up a high-standard lineup: two department leaders, relevant department heads, chief engineers of Hongqi Linux, and experts and academicians of the "863 Plan".

The efficiency of the Microsoft team is amazing-Mondy came up with a Chinese report entitled "China's Future Software and Related Policy Issues". This 42-page report carefully prepared for the visit lists six issues, including open source software, software ecosystem, to open source and China.

About these 6 topics, Mondy began his own speech. According to the recollections of the reporters present - he first reviewed the history of software development in the tone of the software leader and explained the various disadvantages of public general license. It also pointed out that the software system based on "public general license" has prevented China from achieving its goals. There is only one core idea: domestic software is a low-energy product.

This arrogant attitude aroused the anger of the experts present. Scientist Yuan Meng stood up and asked back - Since Microsoft advocates open source code so much, why not open to China?

Mondy did not expect such a question. After he gave a lot of reasons, he left a sentence that completely angered everyone: "China's intellectual property protection is not good, it is one of the worst countries in the world."

As soon as this statement came out, even the officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology who had always restrained could not sit down, and also declared the failure of the personal negotiations at Microsoft headquarters.

But Criger Mondy's departure is not Microsoft's real stop.

A few days later, former US Secretary of State Kissinger wrote a letter to Beijing. The theme of the letter is very simple: plead for Microsoft and put pressure on Yu Cisheng.

In those days, it was the biggest snowfall in Beijing. Zhang Xiaoxiang , Ni Guangnan and more than ten academicians jointly wrote a letter to Premier Zhu Rongji, demanding protection of Yu Cisheng.

It is said that Premier Zhu was moved when he saw the joint letter of more than ten academicians. Liang Ning, the assistant of Academician Ni Guangnan, wrote a sentence many years later: they just want to protect a ray of light.

This storm in early 2002 completely eliminated Microsoft's government system in Beijing, and Hongqi Linux's backbone was stronger. Encouraged by this positive news, the stock price of Xteam, which is listed in Hong Kong, tripled in one month.

In the pattern of the four kings, no one noticed that far away in Changsha, Hunan, National University of Defense Technology also accepted a special task of the National 863 Plan - to create a domestic independent operating system.

[Who expected the defeat to fall like a mountain]

The moment when the "red flag swept through the west wind" seems to have really come.

Shortly after the storm, Sun Yufang, chairman of Hongqi Linux, drafted a secret report for General Office of the State Council , which not only reminded the government of the security risks of adopting the Microsoft system, but also brought financial pressure.

He calculated the following: in 2002, the national PC sales were 7.5 million units. Based on a 20% increase, the national PC sales will reach 9 million units in 2003. If all Linux is adopted instead of Microsoft, China will save nearly $20 billion.

Sun Yufang reminded the government to "must calculate this account", but enterprises settle accounts faster. Faced with Microsoft's high prices, in order to reduce costs, companies such as Lenovo , Dell , HP , Founder , Shida, etc. have all preinstalled the Hongqi system on their computers.

In order to fulfill its promise before joining the WTO, the Chinese government began to strictly investigate pirated software, which gave Linux another chance. What is even happier is that a deputy mayor in Beijing even said that in the future, he will join the skill training of domestic Linux operating systems when conducting computer training for government civil servants.

Good news comes one after another, and the use of Hongqi and other Linux systems is rising steadily. The "De-Microsoftization" campaign is in full swing, but everyone has forgotten one thing: compared to Windows, is domestic Linux easy to use.

As Ni Guangnan said, the key to success of the operating system is not itself, but the ecosystem. This is a systematic project where everyone can pick up firewood and flames. needs to build a complete set of various entities in the industrial chain such as software developers, chip companies, terminal companies, and operators. The most fatal problem with Linux is: lacks supporting software, which makes the ecosystem unable to be built.

A user who changed the Linux system soon discovered that a series of office software based on Linux had problems with the compatibility with Microsoft's document format, so once the system was replaced, it could not open historical files or files given by others.

This is really a fatal thing for users. So it was not until he joined Tencent 10 years later that he understood a keyword: user experience.

To this end, under the leadership of Yu Cisheng, the Beijing Science and Technology Commission took the lead in launching the "Starting Project", convening technicians from China, Japan and South Korea to study how to crack Microsoft's document formats to achieve perfect compatibility between reading, writing and storage. But after a long time, the results were minimal.

Many years later, Liang Ning wrote a sad sentence: We handled the Prime Minister, but we did not handle the user experience.

One side is a slogan that makes people shout, while the other side is a user's complaints. In this crack, the old rival Microsoft is back.

Microsoft, which failed, removed the president of China Gao Qunyao as soon as the storm ended, and replaced him with a Chinese man who was later famous for his "fake in education": Tang Jun .

This is the eighth year that Tang Jun has joined Microsoft. Compared with his ex, this person obviously knows more about flexibility and knows better how to deal with the Chinese market. After he took office, Microsoft changed its arrogant attitude in the past. Not only did senior executives send frequent visits to China, but also diligently visited central ministries and commissions. It also took the "sinking route" and established cooperative technology centers with local governments, and some orders were sold and half-sold; it jointly developed projects with PC companies, and even broke the global strategy of non-joint ventures and invested in domestic software companies.

Seeing the atmosphere window brought by the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Shanghai Communiqué of China and the United States, in June 2002, Microsoft CEO O Steve Ballmer came to China. At the press conference, he left a sweet word of "I have always attached importance to China, and Microsoft is willing to contribute" and took away a cooperation agreement with the State Planning Commission of 6.2 billion yuan.

Everyone was very happy. The temple saw a "obedient and friendly" Microsoft. Microsoft was able to "recreate the Chinese region", and Tang Jun became a great hero and naturally took away the title of "working emperor".

Two years later, in November, the Beijing Municipal Government launched information procurement again, and the public bidding became " single source procurement ", and Microsoft won all operating system orders. As soon as the news came out, all domestic software companies fell into panic.

At this time, only two years have passed since the "procurement storm", and everyone's memory has not yet been blurred. Just a week later, Li Wuqiang, Director of the High-tech Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology, angrily denounced at the event, saying that the theme was "Support the development of domestic software with practical actions and defend the dignity of the "Government Procurement Law", pointing out that the procurement plan was inappropriate and forced domestic software to a dead end.

In that event, only one media finally successfully entered the event. Director Li's sentence "Do you dare to write such a manuscript? Do your magazine dare to publish such manuscripts?" touched everyone present.

Under pressure, the procurement plan was urgently adjusted, and although Tang Jun has left office, Microsoft's attitude is still soft. With Microsoft's "cooperation", the entire order procurement was not affected at all. On a larger scale in the country, in order to ensure that Microsoft wins the bid, some cities and cities have made bidding requirements according to the parameters of Microsoft's products.

Bad things never go alone. In 2005, Sun Yufang, chairman of Zhongke Hongqi, died of a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. After losing this helmist who "should be flat against the upper and obeys the lower", Zhongke Hongqi has continuously exposed problems of incompatibility and poor management of the investors. In 2006, PC companies such as Founder and Tsinghua Tongfang came to the United States to visit and purchased orders worth US$1.7 billion from Microsoft.

At this time, the application ecosystem of domestic Linux is still a barren land-even the national software QQ did not have a Linux version until 2008. Therefore, those computers installed with Linux have extremely poor personal user experience and government and enterprise users cannot conduct business. You can only prepare two systems like "fake accounts", "When you come to check, use domestic products, and then exchange them for Microsoft after checking."

In 2007, domestic Linux ushered in a fatal blow. Microsoft submitted its own Office standard to International Organization for Standardization . At this time, the UOF of manufacturers such as Kingsoft, Hongqi, Yongzhong is only the Chinese national standard. Once "those who get the standards win the world" becomes a fact, the consequences will be unimaginable.

Ni Guangnan, who had seen through this trick, began to run around, hoping that China could vote against it and even use national power to attract more colleagues. In the end, China successfully won 18 votes against it, but Microsoft's votes support it was: 51.

In China, there are few supporters of Linux. Those who purchase pre-installed domestic system computers, the first thing they do when they go home is to uninstall Linux and then install a pirated Windows. Those top posts on the IT forum technical version always have a "How to Uninstall Linux".

The orders are scarce, the ecology is barren, and users are generally abandoned, and they even regard it as a laughing stock. The "boys" at Blue Dot scattered everywhere. Xteam delisted, leaving only the red flag that survived with government subsidies.

Repelling Microsoft happened a few years ago. The four kings of Linux each took control of one side. At that time, no one believed that with China's vast market, the world's strongest Linux industry army would be created, and no one hoped that this army would compete with Microsoft.

But who could have expected that in just a few years, this army was defeated like a mountain. In 2013, Zhongke Hongqi posted a liquidation announcement, announcing the dissolution of the team. The most famous banner of domestic operating systems has fallen into the dust of the times.

[The Kirin on the side of the Galaxy]

In 2006, while conquering the sinking market, Microsoft took out a complaint and sued the Windows pirate Tomato Garden.

On December 28, 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government did a major event: in the procurement of office system, it purchased the domestic software Hongqi Linux and kicked Microsoft out. - DayDayNews

This reminds people of the conversation between stock god Buffett and Bill Gates on July 20, 1998. When asked about Microsoft's Chinese strategy, Gates 's answer was:

"Chinese people will not pay for software, but one day they will. Since they want to steal, we want them to steal us yes. They will become addicted to it, so in the next ten years we will find some way to make them pay the bills. "

Comrade Lei Jun, who was still in Kingsoft back then, had an evaluation of Microsoft: "There is no price for free in the world. People cast a net to let you dig."

The fact was unfortunately told by Lei Jun. For ten years, Microsoft has never forgotten to pull the rope. By 2008, the net tightened.

On August 15, 2008, Suzhou police arrested Hong Lei, the founder of Tomato Garden, on charges of infringement of intellectual property rights. The other two pirates, Yulin Mufeng and Deep Technology, have transformed.

On October 20 of this year, many Chinese netizens received a notice from Microsoft that if they use pirated Office, the computer will not only black screen once an hour, but also have permanent pop-ups to prompt that the pirated version is used.

This "black screen incident" caused a stir among the government and the public.

In the Hong Lei case not long ago, 80% of users voted for Hong Lei, and this time the scolding was naturally conceivable. Within a week, the Chinese Computer Society of publicly stated that it "advocating the use of genuine versions, but opposing Microsoft's black screen"; the legal community generally believes that Microsoft's self-destruction of piracy is unfounded. The topic of Microsoft's "How to make users black screen" has triggered speculation about the defects in the backdoor of Microsoft's system. CCTV put forward a slogan in time: people are the slaughter and I am the fish.

The "black screen incident" in 2008 was ultimately due to the Chinese government's attempt to stop. But Ni Guangnan, who is nearly 70 years old, said: "China has been hijacked by Microsoft", which not only left the shame of "a strong ship and a powerful gun stand outside the country", but also called on the industry's enthusiasm for software independence and controllability and information security.

Ten years passed by, Sun Yufang passed away for a long time, Yu Cisheng and Li Wuqiang have both retired, and Ni Guangnan is an 83-year-old man. But by 2022, the Chinese operating system industry, which had been silent for many years, suddenly became hot again because of a piece of news.

On April 16, 2022, the return capsule of the Shenzhou 13 manned spacecraft successfully landed in the predetermined area. In the past six months, three astronauts including Zhai Zhigang have become the astronaut crew with the longest on-orbit mission in my country. ensures their successful operating system, called Galaxy Kirin V10.

On December 28, 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government did a major event: in the procurement of office system, it purchased the domestic software Hongqi Linux and kicked Microsoft out. - DayDayNews

This is the seed that the "863 Plan" was quietly buried in the National University of Defense Technology 20 years ago.

Four years after receiving the task, the Chinese domestic operating system Galaxy Kirin OS was successfully developed. The application layer of this system refers to Linux, the underlying layer refers to Mach microkernel, the service layer follows the FreeBSD system, and the interface follows the design of Windows.

For the sake of technology and intellectual property rights, this choice cannot be called a mistake, but it has chosen a detour: it is too poor in practicality.

On a computer, the adaptation of software and hardware to the system is like a "chef serving meals". On different systems, various software and hardware must be able to adapt to different "cuisine environments".

For example, a newly launched graphics card, whether on Windows or Linux, only one set of code is required. However, on the Galaxy Kirin , which borrows four systems, it requires the micro-kernel to produce "Western food", the system to produce "Chinese food", and the application layer to make "Japanese food".

However, in the open source community , there is no clear code as a "recipe", so the R&D team has to reversely crack it by itself, and research the corresponding codes for "Western food, Chinese food, and Japanese food", and then adapt one by one.

The computer industry is driven by Moore's Law , and software and hardware are updated very quickly. Such adaptability is obviously unable to keep up with the market. The Galaxy Kirin OS, which is divorced from reality, has become a child who "dead after landing".

The turning point appeared in 2009. The major special project of "nuclear high-grade" led by the State Council was launched. The Galaxy Kirin system project was supported by and was able to start iteration again.

This time, the Kirin team chose to return and only develop based on Linux. The reason is simple: "As the system code maintained by the community all over the world, the sunny the place, the virus is free."

By 2016, Galaxy Kirin's products have made a major breakthrough: from the one-minute boot time in the past to the same as the Microsoft system equipped with Intel CPU.

Different from the confusing exploration at the turn of the century, the industry has more unified consensus on domestic substitution, and the policy support is more firm. With the maturity of the software industry ecosystem, more and more domestic office, financial, and industrial software have joined the ranks of supporting Galaxy Kirin. The situation of "the fireworks are high" began to appear.

In this impact, a powerful hand stretched out and pressed the Galaxy Kirin firmly at the card table, which was the government and the state-owned system behind it. Among government affairs, the military and large state-owned enterprises, the replacement of Galaxy Kirin has begun, and Aerospace Science and Technology Group directly purchased nearly 10,000 Galaxy Kirin systems.

At the end of 2019, the central enterprise China Electronic Information Industry Group took the lead, and Kirin became its brand. The Galaxy Kirin V10 operating system released by the company is simple and easy to use in appearance similar to Win7. It supports Feiteng , Loongson , Shenwei , Zhaoxin, Haiguang, Kunpeng and other domestic CPUs and x86 platforms, and is four times faster than similar products in terms of comprehensive performance.

After winning the title of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission as the "Top Ten Important Weapons of Central Enterprises in 2020", Galaxy Kirin began to sweep the government market in the second year. With its government market share of over 70%, it accounts for the first place, and it is spread across key areas such as party and government, national defense, finance, transportation, communications, and energy, with 10,000 customers.

On December 28, 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government did a major event: in the procurement of office system, it purchased the domestic software Hongqi Linux and kicked Microsoft out. - DayDayNews

This is the achievement of the Galaxy Kirin, but it also reminds people of the fate of "Red Flag Linux" more than ten years ago. If there is no abundant ecology as the foundation, no matter how good the operating system is, it will be like a crumbling castle in the air. Even the Windows Phone system that Microsoft spent a huge amount of money to build was ultimately defeated by Android and iOS due to the lack of software ecosystem.

In 2020, the total number of software and hardware compatibility adaptations of Galaxy Kirin V10 was 30,000. By May 2022, this number exceeded 420,000. But in this figure, Apple's system is in the order of millions, while Windows exceeds tens of millions.

In order to avoid repeating the mistakes of Hongqi Linux, Kirin Software Company made a choice: is open.

On June 30, 2022, a news became a hot search on multiple platforms: Kirin released China's first desktop operating system developer platform "Open Kirin".

On December 28, 2001, the Beijing Municipal Government did a major event: in the procurement of office system, it purchased the domestic software Hongqi Linux and kicked Microsoft out. - DayDayNews

As the first open source root community for desktop operating systems, "Open Kirin" will bring together tens of millions of developers in the Linux field in China. It serves as a developer platform, providing a foundation for the trees and flowers.

This method of "setting the stage first and then hiring a opera troupe" has not yet reached the final stage of verifying the results. But after so many years of Chinese operating systems, the experience of success and failure is summed up in one sentence: requires both visible hand support and invisible hand joint force.

The struggle of an industry is as difficult as the rise of a country. This showdown in the operating system is on the road to challenging the giants and breaking through the blockade. also needs the competition of "horse racing without horses", the government-led arrangement and combination, the exquisite leverage to fight, and the collective charge of "everyone picks up firewood".

I would like to dedicate this article to all those who have contributed to the cause of China's operating system.
