The main reason for its closure is that the lease contract between the Chongqing Far East Department Store Metropolitan Store and the owner of Metropolitan Oriental Plaza will expire on May 31, 2022. After the contract expires, the leased property will be returned to the owner, and the Chongqing Far East Department Store Metropolitan Store will no longer continue to operate.
Far East Department Store Metropolitan Store entered the Metropolitan Plaza in Jiefangbei, Chongqing in September 1997. It was formerly known as " Pacific Department Store ". It was upgraded and renamed to "Far East Department Store Metropolitan Store" in 2013.
As the first batch of fashion foreign department stores entering Chongqing, the Far East Department Store Metropolitan Store has created the "first" results of many Chongqing retail department stores: the first foreign department store introduced in Chongqing, the first foreign department store donated money to build Hope Primary School Department Store, the first department store introduced international cosmetics brand in Chongqing, etc., which once led the "top trend" trend of Chongqing's fashion.

However, Far East Department Store evacuated Jiefangbei and did not choose to evacuate from Chongqing, but chose to enter Guanyin Bridge . According to data, Far East Department Store officially signed a cooperation agreement with Chongqing Times Center located in , Guanyinqiao Business District, , in June 2021 to build Chongqing Times Center International Flagship Shopping Center and create an urban center commercial complex leading Chongqing's boutique fashion consumption culture. This is also the first urban complex operated by Taiwan's Far East Group in the mainland.
This also means that Guanyinqiao business district will have two Far East department stores, Beicheng Tianjie store and Chongqing Times Center store. Why are retail department stores choosing to evacuate Jiefangbei?
The main reason is: Yuzhong District population migration and business districts in Chongqing have been built in business districts, which has led to a decline in the number of local people in Jiefang Monument, and Jiefang Monument has basically become a Jiefang Monument for foreign tourists. Will tourists go to department stores? The answer must be no.
