It is safe to say that no one can be sure what contemporary art is.
The boundary between contemporary art and modern art is just a line gently drawn on the almanac. It is the current situation of contemporary art that is controversial while growing freely. And at the Shenzhen New Media Art Festival, we see artists from all over the world, tempting wildly on the edge of art.

New media art is a new art category with optical media and electronic media as the basic language. They all have one thing in common, that is, users participate in changing the image, shape, and even meaning of the work through direct interaction with the work. "Release Panorama | 2019 Shenzhen New Media Art Festival" brings together all possibilities about new media art and its cross-field symbiosis.

▌In the Midst of There are two main parts: a still blue single line visual part that you see when you enter the space, and an auditory part that collects and amplifies the sound in real time for specific bands in the space. During the production process, the loss of production intention and direction caused the artist to have a huge fear of the unknown and uncontrollable.

■ In the Midst of
Q: What is the inspiration for "In the Midst of"?
A: When I was working as a graduate graduate design in Japan, I tried to get the best exhibition space. As the work deepened, it was a bottleneck stage. I felt that many of my attempts would not bring any changes. One day, I was so depressed that I was extremely depressed. In a fully enclosed space of more than 200 square meters, I turned off all the lights and lay in the middle of the space, in a darkness, and nothing could be reached. Once the air conditioner was turned on, the whole space was vibrating. In fact, this space is not an inorganic space, but an organic one. When I see my heart in this space, I display my inner things and . When I accepted my state at that time, my previous fear disappeared.

■ Before entering the space, Si Yaqin constantly emphasized the need to turn off the mobile phone screen
Q: Why did you think of integrating multiple art media such as images, spaces and devices?
A: I think the human body senses are too dominant by visual senses. When we see a work or video, there is a lot of information from the visual direction, but we don’t know how to say it, and it feels very comfortable. In fact, many receptors in our bodies are ignored, so for me, how to link the works with our body sensory organs is a very important factor. I hope to give the audience some new feelings, without limitations, it is visual.
Q: Will it be difficult to learn a variety of art media, or how will you feel when you come into contact with a new media?
A: Yes, there are many difficulties. As more and more media are used, I will become more and more curious about new media. For example, my friend and I recently had a project in Berlin. I want to learn how to deal with metals. This field is brand new and unknown to me.I think this is the difficulty, maybe it is your adaptation to the unknown and how to establish connections with the unknown fields. But psychologically speaking, I am particularly satisfied with this kind of continuous learning and expanding my own knowledge field.

■ Siyaqin and Piet
Q: It seems that your works are exploring a kind of "nothingness". Is this related to your experience, and what do you feel about "nothingness" now?
A: I know I like something vague or not very defined. There are infinite possibilities in these things. I think this is the content that brings pleasure from art. For example, the most abundant thing in this space is what we cannot see, including dust, which always exist and are just ignored by us, but they are stronger than what we actually define.

Soon it gets used to visitors and starts having fun with them, turning the mirror to people at different angles. The machine has no face, it is just a machine. Instead, anything it sees becomes its appearance. In this encounter, you will be the face of the machine, looking at yourself staring at the machine.

Q: Have you made a machine with emotions, will you also have feelings for the machine?
A: I think the most interesting thing is that I am the creator of these emotions. I know the behavioral logic behind the machine imitates emotions one by one behind the scenes. Designing the life behavior of machines seems to make me feel emotional, but I actually don’t. I don’t have an intimate emotional reaction to machines.

■ Piet explains to us how "Escape" works
Q: Is it imitating human emotions?
A: No, it does not refer to humans, but rather like a living machine, or like an animal, with various behaviors. When it encounters something strange, it will make some different actions and behavioral reactions, which will be like this for both humans and animals.

■ Piet shared a lot of his views on robot
Q: Do you usually watch artificial intelligence film and television works, such as "Love, Death and Robot"?
A: I also watched this web drama, and I think it was done very seriously and very attractive. But every time I watch science fiction works, I also have questions, which is what impact they have on actual technological development. Science fiction works imagine the fictional world, which can actually be said to be a factor in the development of the future world. Because the initial motivation of people entering the technology industry may also be because they like science fiction works, including myself, and have been greatly influenced by science fiction works.

■ An ideal art institution
"Artists think that the basic points of being an ideal art institution."
Q: You said: "I have studied artists who have worked with in the past in the gallery. Some artists are not very popular. I told the gallery director that I don't like and told her not to cooperate with these artists in the future." Is it true?
A: Yes (laughs). I took the process with video at that time. The first part was that I told the gallery that I didn’t like these artists, and the second part was that the gallery explained to me why they were chosen. In the end, everyone still understood each other.
Q: Why do you have to do this? Is it a wall?
A: It’s just a personal preference, this is a very subjective thing. Since the gallery has worked with me, I think it should study the other party. It still seems that I have never tried it and it has been smooth all the time, or my friends around me think that I am not harmful.
Q: So tell us what the artists I like are like.
A: It mainly depends on the feeling. The temperament of the work is very important, as well as the relationship between the artist and the work, and whether it is sincerely expressed.

▌ "The Ascending Bed" is a residential experiment. The artist built a moving bed to move in the hiding room instead of a still body. When a person is no longer a Homo erect person, but a lying person, the space within the traditional living area has also changed from horizontal layout to vertical expansion. The artist lived alone in this specially made room for a month, spending most of his time in the moving bed.

■ Ascending Bed
Q: After experiencing hiding life in "The Ascending Bed", what conclusions did life scientists come to detect your physical condition?
A: After a month, I felt particularly uncomfortable, but what surprised me was that my physical report showed no signs of unhealthy. Moreover, I lost two kilograms of fat and my physical fitness increased. Of course, it may also be related to my bike beside the bed. However, the vision and balance have significantly worsened, which should be related to being able to only look at the screen and living in bed.
Q: How did you think of doing this project?
A: The initial reason was just to be playful. I fell and injured my spine while sitting on a jet ski. The doctor said I needed to lie down to recover. After lying in bed for half a year, I felt very uncomfortable and felt very contradictory to the purpose of recovery. Later I read the report of the Japanese hibernator. They were the population who lived in houses for a long time and were almost secretive to society. In addition to them, there are many elderly, weak, sick and disabled, and they are likely to live a life spent in bed. I thought it would make sense to study them, so I started the project.

■ Chen Yiyun’s self-portrait
Q: What do you feel about the hibernation process?
A: At first I was quite confident because I was also a homestay. But two or three weeks later, I began to feel depressed, and I would suddenly cry and have no desire to express myself.Because the life scientists participated in the project, I recorded my psychologically by writing diaries and self-portraits, and my later self-portraits became more and more strange. After the project ended, I went to the Netherlands to show the exhibition, but I suddenly cried during my ordinary communication with others. You can imagine how difficult it is for those who have lived in hiding for five or six years to enter society again.

■ 24-line
Q: What is the inspiration for "24-line"? Does it look like a clock?
A: In "24 Lines", I do not focus on specific moments or artificial information, but I am always interested in geometric shapes. For example, the patterns of Arabic characters, I don't recognize these words at all, but I will wonder why they are in this shape, which is quite difficult to explain. For me, I also just want to show these lines to the audience and see how the people watching feel when they see them.

■ Lee Jin explains the art installation
Q: What prompts you to express it abstractly?
A: I have been living abroad for more than 10 years. Whenever I go to a new country, I will encounter language barriers. I have to figure out the meaning of the other party’s language. So, I always think about communicating in a nonverbal way. Meaningful words or pronunciation may limit people's thinking, which is my personal opinion. When you see abstract figures and don’t know what they are, you will always guess what the shape, sound and other abstract objects mean. In this process, you will have a lot of your own ideas.
