Despite having a completely different size from previous models, the Apple Watch Ultra is compatible with straps made of 42mm, 44mm and 45mm Apple Watch lugs. The new and larger Apple Watch Ultra has a 49mm display that brings out a larger-looking form factor. However, it is still compatible with the Apple Watch strap connector introduced in the original model.
The new Apple Watch Ultra straps such as the Trail Loop, Alpine Loop and Ocean Band are specially made to match this rugged watch. Although designed for the 49mm model, these straps are still compatible with the previous large-sized Apple Watch.
This means that any large Apple Watch strap, now or in the past, can be used with any large Apple Watch currently shipped. Therefore, the 42mm, 44mm and 45mm straps are universal in every generation of Apple Watch.
However, the straps made for the Apple Watch Ultra have a specially designed color matching, making them difficult to match with other Apple Watch watch faces.
The owner of the small-sized Apple Watch has nothing to do with the wider strap, which refers to users of 38mm, 40mm and 41mm cases. Since the Apple Watch Ultra strap only has one size and cannot be matched with the smaller Apple Watch.
Customers interested in Apple Watch Ultra or new watch straps can now pre-order, and will be shipped and available in stores starting September 16.
