Taiwan Underground Air Force Base , a super project hidden deep in the mountains, how much do you know?
Then why did Taiwan build such an underground air force base?
What exactly does it do?
In 2010, during Taiwan's annual "Hanguang 26" military exercise, the exercise route was different from the past. 45 "Phantom" fighter jets chose to fly to Jiashan base for renovation.
Because Hanguang military exercise is the highest-level and largest annual routine exercise of the Taiwan military, the outside world pays great attention to it. Just when people were confused about the newly emerged Jiashan base in Taiwan, the US National Defense News made a disclosure, and people realized that there was still a super underground air base hidden in Taiwan.
In the 1970s, after the United States and China began to establish diplomatic relations, the United States chose to divide the boundary with Taiwan in order to show its attitude towards establishing diplomatic relations. Now the Taiwan authorities, who have always regarded the United States as their backers, were a little anxious. With Taiwan's military strength at that time, if the mainland really wanted to do something, then they would be vulnerable.
As the leader of Taiwan at that time, Jiang Ching-kuo
thought about it and believed that formulating a defense plan to defend Taiwan was an urgent task. After repeated discussions, relevant departments in Taiwan decided to "drill the ground hole" and establish underground fortifications, and then hide the most advanced fighter imported from the United States at that time. In this way, even if the mainland wants to regain Taiwan and launch a sudden attack, Taiwan can at least preserve some of its military strength.
This is the secret military project later called "Jian'an 3", consisting of two parts: Jiashan Base and Zhihang Base.
Jiashan Base is located in Jialin Village, Xincheng Township, Hualien County, Taiwan Province and Dashan Village, Xiulin Township, .
It started construction in 1984 and was completed in 1992. It took 8 years to spend more than 40 billion NTD . According to the exchange rate at that time, should be equivalent to more than 9 billion RMB.
Jiashan Base is the largest underground air raid shelter of the Taiwan Army. It has dozens of caves with large and small sizes inside, and can stop more than 200 of Taiwan's most advanced fighter jets at that time.
. In order to facilitate docking and takeoff, the Taiwanese authorities also ordered the construction of an ultra-long aircraft runway directly to the Jiashan base at Hualien Air Force Airport, with a total length of up to 2,500 meters.
In addition, in order to further protect the Jiashan base, the Taiwanese authorities spent another 10 years to build supporting communication systems, command and control systems, small hospitals in the surrounding areas of Shoufeng and Chongde, and even ammunition database and missile base. In this way, Jiashan base became the largest "underground air base" in Far East .
But that's not the end. In the mid-1990s, in order to make the Jiashan base more solid, the Taiwanese authorities built the Zhihang base in Taitung County , not far from the Jiashan base. This was named after the Air Force ace pilot Gao Zhihang during the anti-Japanese period. Although the Zhihang Base is incomparable to Jiashan Base, it also cost more than NT$10 billion to be built. Like Jiashan Base, it has hollowed out from the inside. Not only are there three hangars that are connected to each other, but there are also pilot standby rooms, officers and soldiers dormitories, and even combat command centers that are not available in Jiashan Base.
In addition, Zhihang Base has also put a lot of effort into its anti-bombing capabilities. Zhihang Base hollowed out a tunnel under granite, such as the strike capability of the missile at that time, which can generally withstand it. Of course, the missiles that are constantly evolving are in trouble.
However, although Jiashan Base and Zhihang Base can be considered to be at the blind spot of missile attack, it is difficult to form an effective attack unless it leaps the central mountain range. But if you really want to do something, blow up the runway of the plane and cut off their retreat. By then, no matter how many advanced fighter jets there are at Jiashan Base and Zhihang Base, they will not be useful.
Obviously, the Taiwanese authorities also realized this.
So they started to build a highway again, planning to start from the Suao section of Beiyi Expressway and continue to build it southward, and then after crossing the central mountain range, they finally successfully passed through Jiashan Base and Zhihang Base.
In this way, even if the plane runway is blown up, the "Suhua Expressway" can also be used as a backup take-off and landing aircraft.
However, because of the "Suhua Expressway", it is necessary to open mountains and build tunnels and bridges, which is also costly, so many environmental protection organizations in Taiwan have launched protests, but the Taiwanese authorities seem to still insist.
Do you think this "Suhua Expressway" will play a role?
