U.S. Vice President Pence condemned the refugee crisis of Rohingya , saying that the whole world is witnessing the "major tragedy" staged in Myanmar. This is by far the toughest rhetoric used by senior U.S. officials against the Rohingya crisis.
According to VOA, when attending the UN peacekeeping meeting on the 20th, Pence said: "Recently, after the Myanmar government postcard was attacked by militants, Myanmar security forces responded with terrible barbarism. They burned villages and drove the Rohingya out of their homes."
Pence said: "The images of violence and victims of violence have shocked the American people and the whole world."
Over the past month, more than 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled because they face human rights violations and discrimination in Myanmar. Pence noted that tens of thousands of hiking escapees were children.
The US State Department announced on the 20th that the United States will provide $32 million in humanitarian relief materials to help Rohingya Muslims who flee Myanmar. These rescue supplies include food, medical supplies, drinking water, etc.
