The 12th generation Core processor Alder Lake launched by Intel last year has supported USB 4.0 transmission interface and is integrated with Intel Thunderbolt high-speed transmission interface. It will start to turn to the 13th generation Core processor Raptor Lake in the second half of this year, and will expand support for high-speed interfaces such as USB 4.0 and PCIe 5.0. As for the Rembrandt laptop processor released by Super Micro earlier this year, it has supported USB 4.0, and the Raphael desktop processor launched in the second half of the year will also begin to support USB 4.0.
Driven by Intel and Ultramicro’s new processor platforms, USB 4.0 devices will enter the market in large numbers this year. Currently, the market uses USB 3.2 and USB 4.0 as the mainstream transmission technology, and has started to use the Type-C port in USB 3.2 Gen2x2 to support dual channels to improve data transmission rate and also support power transmission (USB-PD).
USB 4.0 is divided into two specifications according to the transmission rate: 20Gbps and 40Gbps. Due to the doubled data transmission volume, in order to maintain signal stability, the passive cable length is reduced to less than 0.8 meters, and the active cable length is increased to more than 1 meter, and it needs to be equipped with Retimer or Redriver support. In addition to the length of the cable can be lengthened to 1.5 to 2 meters, it can also solve the problem of signal attenuation due to transmission distance.
In the key USB Type-C section, the EU proposed a universal charger plan in 2021, aiming to unify the charging connectors of mobile phones, tablets, cameras and other devices into Type-C by 2024, which is expected to save tens of thousands of tons of electronic waste and unnecessary charger costs. As for China recently, it has also begun to unify the specifications of connectors, and will fully require the adoption of Type-C for electronic products.
USB 4.0 control IC demand is bullish
Intel and Super Micro platforms fully support USB 4.0, making the demand for USB 4.0 rapidly rise in 2022. The legal person is optimistic and manufacturers such as Weiquan Electric, Yuchuang, Chuangwei and Weifeng, which have successfully entered the USB 4.0 control IC supply chain, will be prosperous until the second half of the year when New Tang has not missed this business opportunity and announced that they will join this new battlefield. Since the
USB 4.0 interface needs to support up to 40 Gbps transmission capacity and can support related functions such as power transmission, image transmission and data transmission, it is necessary to accumulate a large amount of USB Silicon Intelligence to have development tickets to enter the USB 4.0 control IC, resulting in the time-honored USB control IC factory that can quickly enter business opportunities.
Since USB 4.0 can support power transmission, when most laptops currently use Type-C interface and USB 4.0 interface, it is necessary to import a USB-PD (power transmission) chip to make both the laptop and the charging cable have fast charging function. Therefore, the legal person is optimistic that Weiquandian is expected to take advantage of the fast charging business opportunity in the USB 4.0 generation, and promotes the shipment momentum of USB-PD.
Weiquan Electric announced that the combined revenue of 2021 reached 3.602 billion yuan and an annual growth of 37.5%, rewriting a historical high. After entering January 2022, the combined revenue of a single month reached a historical second-highest level of 339 million yuan.
legal person is optimistic. Weiquandian will continue to benefit from fast charging business opportunities in 2022, pushing USB-PD chip shipments to a higher level.
Yuchuang entered the supply chain with E-Marker chips in USB 4.0. At present, the products have joined hands with large connector manufacturers to start shipping in large quantities. As the peripheral ecosystem of USB 4.0 continues to expand, it will help Yuchuang's subsequent operation growth momentum continue to improve, and order visibility has been viewed until the second half of the year.
As for Chuangwei and Weifeng, they entered the USB 4.0 supply chain with USB Hub and USB Device terminals, respectively. Chuangwei is expected to start shipment in large quantities in 2022, and Weifeng is the first to start shipment in the fourth quarter of 2021. Orders from both major manufacturers have been scheduled to the second half of the year.
New Tang also announced that it is developing USB 4.0 Retimer chips, preparing to seize the repeater chip business opportunities required for USB 4.0 high-speed transmission interfaces. The company has not disclosed the mass production time. The industry expects that good news is expected to be heard as early as 2023.
