According to reports, the "Silk Road Alliance" is named after the historic "Silk Road" sea section, which connects Southeast Asia with China, the Indian subcontinent and the Arabian Peninsula.

Lloyd’s Register’s Maritime Decarbonization Center said it is working with 11 supply chain stakeholders around the world. Currently, members of the "Silk Road Alliance" include shipping companies such as Pacific International Lines (PIL), Wanhai Shipping, Yang Ming Shipping, and X-Press Feeders, as well as shipyards, fuel suppliers, engine manufacturers, and financial institutions.

Specifically, the members of the Silk Road Alliance will use their expertise in their respective fields to develop fuel transition strategies, mainly for container ships operating in Asia, by promoting cooperation within the industry to fulfill the shipping industry’s commitment to the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference. (COP26), through practical actions to reduce investment risks in the use of sustainable carbon-neutral fuels.

In response, Charles, Lloyd’s Register decarbonization project manager Haskell said: "This is the first time that a fuel transition strategy has been developed for multiple stakeholders. The Green Shipping Corridor aims to encourage ships to use zero-emission fuels by establishing a pricing mechanism, initially through subsidies and eventually through carbon pricing strategies.
