The long-rumored matter of TSMC building a factory in the United States has finally been settled.
html On May 15, TSMC announced on its official website that it planned to build and operate an advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant in the United States. The factory will be built in Arizona, USA, using TSMC's 5-nanometer technology for wafer manufacturing, with a monthly production capacity of 20,000 semiconductor wafers, directly creating more than 1,600 high-tech professional jobs, and creating thousands of indirect jobs in the semiconductor ecosystem. Position.5nm is the most advanced process currently being mass-produced by TSMC. This year, 5nm chips will be used in new flagship mobile phones released by Apple and Huawei in the second half of the year.
TSMC plans to start construction in 2021, with target production starting in 2024. Total spending on the project, including capital expenditures, is approximately $12 billion.

In the semiconductor industry chain, it mainly includes the three major production processes of design, manufacturing, and packaging and testing. Among them, manufacturing is the most difficult and is at the core. TSMC is the king of wafer manufacturing, accounting for half of the market. TrendForce's report shows that the top five global revenue sources in the foundry industry in the first quarter of 2020 are TSMC (54.1%), Samsung (15.9%), GlobalFoundries (7.7%), UMC (7.4%) and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (4.5%).
Under the changes in Sino-US trade relations, TSMC is also involved in the relationship between the two major economies. Due to TSMC's high-end technology and key position, the United States also hopes that TSMC will continue to set up factories in the United States.
Regarding the question of whether to build a factory in the United States, TSMC has previously stated that it is considering the United States as the location of a new factory, but there is no specific plan yet. TSMC co-CEO Liu Deyin also said that building a factory in the United States depends on three conditions, namely economic benefits, cost advantages, and complete personnel and supply chains.
Today, TSMC has made a decision quickly. TSMC stated in the announcement that this U.S. factory will not only enable TSMC to better support customers, but also provide more opportunities to attract global talents. The project is of critical strategic importance to the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem, which enables U.S. companies to manufacture their cutting-edge semiconductor products within the United States and benefit from the proximity of world-class semiconductor foundries and ecosystems.
At the same time, TSMC also mentioned that the project will require a large amount of capital and technology investment. The strong investment environment in the United States and its excellent workforce are attractive for investment.
However, this is not TSMC's first factory in the United States. TSMC currently has a wafer fab in Camas, Washington, and design centers in Austin, Texas, and San Jose, California. The Arizona factory will become TSMC's second production base in the United States.
