U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Friday, as gains in the Healthcare, Consumer Staples and Technology sectors led shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.15%, the S&P 500 index fell 0.08%, and the Nasdaq Composite index gained 0.12%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which rose 0.83% or 4.25 points to trade at 518.63 at the close. Meanwhile, American Express Company (NYSE: AXP ) added 0.52% or 0.73 points to end at 141.76 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL ) was up 0.47% or 0.69 points to 147.04 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ: WBA ), which fell 1.73% or 0.66 points to settle at 37.55 at the close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DOW ) declined 1.72% or 0.90 points to end at 51.38 and The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS ) declined 1.61% or 1.57 points to 95.86.
The best performers on the S&P 500 were Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ: ENPH ), which rose 4.65% to end at 216.45, Centene Corp (NYSE: CNC ), which rose 3.23% to end at 88.01 and McKesson Corporation (NYSE: MCK ), which rose 3.10% closed at 331.20.
The worst performers were Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), which was down 5.10% to 36.81 in late trade, Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was down 4.67% to end at 39.59, and Smith AO Corporation (NYSE:AOS) which was down 4.43 at the close. % to 56.97.
The best performers on the Nasdaq Composite were Aditx Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ADTX) which rose 50.00% to end at 0.24, Waitr Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:WTRH) which rose 48.49% to settle at 0.35 and Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:WTRH ) which rose 48.49% to end at 0.35 :ORMP), which rose 44.37% to close at 8.20.
The worst performers were Enjoy Technology Inc (NASDAQ: ENJY ), which was down 52.12% to 0.19 in late trade, Upstart Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: UPST ), which was down 19.71% to end at 27.09, ContraFect Corp (NASDAQ: CFRX ) fell 15.95% to close at 2.95.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by 1,705 to 1,404 on the New York Stock Exchange , with 138 ending unchanged; on Nasdaq , 2,085 stocks advanced, 1,631 declined, and 232 were unchanged.
Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ: WBA ) shares fell to 52-week lows; down 1.73% or 0.66 to 37.55. Upstart Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: UPST ) shares fell to all time lows; down 19.71% or 6.65 to 27.09.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures S&P 500 Index options implied volatility , fell 5.52% to 24.64.
html Gold futures for August delivery rose 0.03%, or $0.50, to $1,740.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodity trading, crude oil for August delivery rose 2.05% or 2.11 to trade at $104.84 a barrel, while the September Brent crude contract rose 2.40% or 2.51 to trade at $107.16 a barrel.EUR/USD was flat 0.21% at 1.02, while USD/JPY was up 0.10% at 136.12.
U.S. dollar index futures fell 0.18% to 106.76.
