The Asian U12 Youth Baseball Championship is a brand event under the Asian Baseball Federation and is held every two years. This tournament is hosted by the Chinese Baseball Association, Zhongshan Municipal Education and Sports Bureau, and Zhongshan Dongsheng Town People’s Government. This is the fourth time that the Asian U12 Youth Baseball Championship has been held in China. There will be eight teams competing from China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, China and Chinese Taipei.
As the host of the competition, the Chinese National Youth Baseball Team won the championship in the second competition. The members of the national youth team in this competition are composed of outstanding coaches and players from the top three teams in the 2016 National Group A Youth Baseball Championship. Among them, 6 youth baseball players from Dongsheng, a "China Baseball Town", were selected. As the traditional strong teams in Asian baseball, Japan, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei have all selected the best players to participate in this event.
Zhongshan Dongsheng is a well-known baseball town in China; in 2007, Liang Youwen, the son of Liang Fuchu, the veteran of the Pandas living in San Francisco and the "Father of Chinese Baseball", learned that his hometown Zhongshan had the first baseball team. Regardless of his 82-year-old age, , resolutely returned to China to coach the Zhongshan Little League team on a voluntary basis, which made Zhongshan Dongsheng become attached to the Pandas.
As the hometown of Liang Fuchu, the "Father of Chinese Baseball", Dongsheng Town, Zhongshan City has proposed the development goal of building a "baseball town" since 2013. At present, baseball has been fully popularized in 20 primary and secondary schools in the jurisdiction, with 20 baseball teams and 20 baseball fields, initially forming an echelon of athletes connecting primary schools, junior high schools and high schools.
According to incomplete statistics, the number of members of the Dongsheng Town Youth Baseball Team has exceeded 500. In addition, in order to host this competition, Feng Xiaolong, member of the Standing Committee of the Zhongshan CPPCC and chairman of the Zhongshan Baseball and Softball Association, presided over the construction of the Zhongshan Panda Youth Baseball Stadium and it was completed at the end of October 2016.
