The biggest controversy was caused by Tsai Ing-wen’s famous celebrity Lin Zhijian. Lin Zhijian, who recently stated that he would continue to promote the merger of "Greater Hsinchu", posted a post on Facebook yesterday, saying to Hsinchu citizens that he "feels really sad and sorry". Kuomintang’s 2022 Taoyuan mayoral candidate Zhang Shanzheng responded to the Democratic Progressive Party’s recommendation of Lin Zhijian as a candidate, saying that “anyone is welcome as long as they really want to work hard for Taoyuan.”
Representative Gao Hong'an of the Taiwan People's Party criticized Lin Zhijian's generous acceptance of the Democratic Progressive Party's call to run for mayor of Taoyuan, which "will inevitably disappoint Hsinchu citizens."

However, internal strife seems to have come earlier than external troubles. Lin Zhijian has "no household registration" in Taoyuan, and Shen Huihong has "no party membership" in Green Camp.
