Wang Jun was born in Hunan on April 11, 1941. He graduated from Harbin Military Engineering Institute. He worked as an engineer at Jiangnan Shipyard and Wuchang Shipyard. He served in the Navy of the People's Liberation Army from 1977 to 1978 and entered the navy in 1979. Worked in the Business Department of China International Trust and Investment Corporation, and served as Chairman of CITIC Group Corporation from 1995 to 2006.

Wang Jun first joined CITIC as the general manager of the business department, and later served as deputy general manager and general manager of CITIC until 1995.
