Why does structural designer can only arrange shear wall according to the method of Figure 1, but cannot arrange shear wall on the exterior wall of the balcony according to the method of Figure 2?
This is the eternal pain for the structor. Article 3.0.21 of the "GBT 50353-2013 Construction Engineering Construction Area Calculation Specifications" stipulates that the balcony within the main structure should be calculated based on the horizontal area of its structure peripheral structure; the balcony outside the main structure should be calculated based on the horizontal projection area of its structure base plate .
In other words, if a shear wall is arranged on the exterior wall of the balcony, the balcony must be calculated based on the full area, while no shear wall is arranged on the exterior wall of the balcony, the balcony must be calculated based on the half area.
No developer is willing to calculate the balcony based on the full area, because of the limit on floor area ratio, the developer will be limited to less room area, that is, less money to sell. The structor can only surrender.

New regulations
Transfer is coming! The latest provisions of the "GB55031-2022 General Code for Civil Buildings" stipulate that as long as the balcony is closed, it is considered to be full-area, which has nothing to do with the layout of the shear wall, and is a strong standard and must be implemented. The structor can finally arrange the shear wall according to the needs of the structure!
