Preface:
Premier Zhou Enlai was a great proletarian revolutionary. His life has run through the history of New China from construction to development.
1949-1958, in addition to serving as prime minister, Zhou Enlai also served as my country's foreign minister for nearly 9 years. With his extraordinary energy and wisdom, he defeated US Secretary of State Dulles, made Khrushchev withdraw from the market, etc. He is funny and humorous, and can turn questions into beautiful talks when facing various emergencies.
At that time, the new China had just been established. The Kuomintang reactionaries who were wandering in Taiwan and the covetous US imperialism all threatened our country's diplomatic environment at all times. Premier Zhou used his wisdom to clear the dark clouds for the New China.
went to Geneva to show off his diplomatic style
1954, the Geneva Conference was held in the Swiss Federation, and Zhou Enlai led a diplomatic delegation to attend. This was also the first appearance of New China on the international stage. Zhou Enlai made very detailed preparations for how to fight this "opening battle".
At that time, in order to let the delegates appreciate the Chinese style during the recess, the staff specially arranged a color movie called " Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai ", which was the first color opera movie made by my country. However, foreign representatives did not know much about Chinese culture, so the staff specially wrote a movie manual to give foreign representatives a better viewing experience.
When Premier Zhou reviewed the manual, he criticized: "No one reads such a manual." Seeing that the staff was not convinced, he said gently :
"Propaganda also has special and methods. If you use more than ten pages of manual as an invitation, it will not work. You can change the method and just write a sentence on the invitation: 'Welcome to appreciate China's " Romeo and Juliet ".
Sure enough, foreign representatives came to watch it one after another, and the movie also won the praise of the representatives.
Just as the Geneva meeting was held in full swing, the US delegation began to make small moves.
US delegation head Dulles is a stubborn anti-China element who formulated the main policies of the United States in the early stage of the Cold War. When it was his turn to speak, he arrogantly said that the responsibility for launching the Korean War lies in China. Premier Zhou immediately fought back and made a well-founded refutation, leaving Dulles speechless.
U.S. Secretary of State Dulles
A plan failed and another plan came into being. Dulles gathered allies and threw out the "Declaration of Sixteen Kingdoms", hoping to disrupt the situation in the venue, so that the meeting would end early if it failed to pass any resolution. This vicious plan gave the United States another "victory". The Geneva Conference was a meeting to coordinate the Indochina War. If progress was not achieved, Indochina countries would continue to be shrouded in the war and all efforts would be in vain.
At this critical moment, Premier Zhou stood up and proposed that at least one resolution should be passed. He said:
"The Chinese delegation attended such a meeting for the first time with the spirit of consultation and reconciliation. If the last suggestion we put forward today is rejected, we will have to express our greatest regret. The peace-loving people all over the world will make a judgment on this fact!"
's speech obviously severely defeated Dulles' army, pointing out that the United States' participation in the meeting was simply to disrupt. If he refuses, the United States will fall into unjust public pressure in the international community. The meeting scene suddenly became silent.
At this time, Belgium represents Spark hurried out to smooth things over, saying that "Declaration of Sixteen Kingdoms" is consistent with the spirit of the suggestion of Prime Minister Zhou. Premier Zhou asked back:
"If it is consistent, why do we just issue the Declaration of the Sixteen Kingdoms instead of adding the Declaration of the Declaration of the 19 Kingdoms of China, Soviet and Vietnam?"
Spark was stopped and he had to agree with China's suggestions.
The US delegation was panicked and they had to say: they needed to ask the government for instructions, and would not express their opinions or participate in the vote before this.Premier Zhou then took advantage of the victory and pointed out:
"The attitude of the United States has made us all understand how they blocked this meeting and constantly prevented the conclusion of even the most minimal and reconciliational suggestions."
The US delegation had to leave temporarily in awkwardly in the eyes of everyone.
After the meeting, Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov privately said to Premier Zhou: "Your speech just now is so wonderful!"
In the later stage of the meeting, Premier Zhou keenly grasped that the interests of the United States and France were not consistent, and there were even quite a few differences. This greatly increases the possibility of meetings reaching agreements. Premier Zhou first proposed at the China-Soviet Three Kingdoms Conference to make some concessions at the conference in exchange for Vietnam's compensation on the issue of zoned areas. The representatives of the Soviet Union and Vietnam agreed.
Then he found the French representative Meng Dais and frankly exchanged opinions. Premier Zhou's sincere language and superb insights made the French representative deeply admire him. Finally, the parties at the meeting reached an agreement, jointly issued a declaration, unanimously agreed to stop the war in Indochina, and the diplomatic goals were successfully completed.
The US delegation originally wanted to use this meeting to put pressure on the New China and isolate the New China. Unexpectedly, under Premier Zhou's superb diplomatic art, the United States was put on an isolated side. So in the end, the final declaration of the furious US delegation that announced that it would not attend the meeting became a real clown.
humorous and witty. Turning questions into US talks. After winning a great victory at the Geneva meeting, Prime Minister Zhou visited India and Myanmar again, met with the leaders of the two countries, and put forward the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which received support and response from many countries.
Subsequently, Premier Zhou also attended the Banlong Conference . The meeting achieved great success, which strongly inspired the vast number of developing countries to strive for national independence and liberation, and demonstrated that the New China is playing an increasingly important role in international affairs.
With Khrushchev coming to power, Sino-Soviet relations took a sharp turn for the worse. Khrushchev withdrew most of the Soviet experts, bankrupting many aid plans set by the Stalin era. Khrushchev's various actions have turned the peaceful and mutual assistance relationship between the two countries into a multi-faceted confrontational relationship.
In this context, Premier Zhou was invited to visit the Soviet Union. During his meeting with Soviet leaders, Premier Zhou criticized the revisionist policies implemented by the Soviet Union at this stage, which annoyed Khrushchev. Khrushchev did not respond directly, but instead attacked Premier Zhou on class issues. He said: "Prime Minister Zhou Enlai, your criticism is very good, but you should agree with one sentence: I came from the working class, but you came from the bourgeoisie ." The sentence
is undoubtedly very sensitive, which makes the atmosphere of the scene suddenly subtle. The Soviet staff next to him are also gloatingly waiting for Premier Zhou's answer.
Premier Zhou replied calmly: "Yes, Comrade Khrushchev! But we both have one thing in common, we both betrayed the classes of our respective origins."
Premier Zhou's words unexpectedly gave them the poisonous arrow back to him. Khrushchev was speechless for a moment and had to leave in disappointment. Premier Zhou's clever counterattack was immediately rumored as a U.S. talk by various countries in the socialist camp.
Once, when Premier Zhou held a press conference, it was a Western reporter's turn to ask a question, but he asked: "Hello, Mr. Prime Minister, do you have prostitutes in China now?" said this, and there was an uproar. Some people condemned the reporter's politeness, and some staff members wanted to greet the guards and drove the reporter out of the field.
Premier Zhou waved his hand to calm everyone down, and then said with certainty: "Yes." It was people's turn to talk to Premier Zhou at this time. Premier Zhou then replied with a smile: "In Taiwan Province, China." People laughed after hearing this. Seeing that the reporter had not achieved his goal, he could only sit down in regret.
Premier Zhou’s answer was wonderful, which not only showed that Taiwan is a part of our country, but also in turn set off the good atmosphere after the founding of New China and satirized the Kuomintang authorities in Taiwan. Following the reporter's words, the series of tricks he had prepared before was not available, which really made people appalled by the Prime Minister's wit.
Coincidentally, another Western reporter immediately asked: "Mr. Prime Minister, do you know how much funds are in your central bank?"
my country Central Bank is People's Bank of China . In the early days of the founding of New China, the funding reserves in the national treasury were not sufficient. As we all know, when the Kuomintang fled Taiwan, it took away most of its domestic gold reserves, and at that time, the funding reserves of many countries were linked to gold. This question was undoubtedly a hidden ridicule. At the same time, it also involves our country's secrets, and Premier Zhou cannot answer rashly. If the answer is not known, the reporter is given another room to attack the Prime Minister.
Premier Zhou calmly replied calmly: "The People's Bank of China has 18 yuan, 80 cents."
Everyone was puzzled and didn't understand what the Prime Minister said meant.
Premier Zhou then smiled and said:
"The denomination of RMB issuance is 10 yuan, 5 yuan, 2 yuan, and 1 yuan; there are five-cent , two-cent junction, one cent; five cents, two cents, and one cent. Together, it is exactly 18 yuan, 8 cents, and 8 cents."
reacted and warm applause suddenly echoed the scene.
Premier Zhou said immediately:
"The RMB has the credit of the Chinese government to guarantee , and the diligence of the Chinese people are supported. Everyone is welcome to use and exchange it."
The people present cheered loudly after hearing this. Premier Zhou's words made the reporter shake his head helplessly and sit down.
Premier Zhou has created a new foundation as the diplomatic cause of New China. He personally led and created our country's diplomatic activities and formulated foreign policies with Chairman Mao. With his continuous work attitude and strong personal charm, he dispelled some countries' suspicion about the New China and won our country's lofty reputation on the world stage.
It is worth mentioning that Premier Zhou did not always have smooth sailing when attending diplomatic activities. When attending the Bandung meeting, the CIA intended to kill someone with a knife and revealed the Prime Minister's special plane to the Kuomintang. The Kuomintang sent a spy to hide an bomb on the right side of the special plane, trying to wait for the plane to go to the sky and detonate it.
Unfortunately, shortly after Premier Zhou set out, he received an invitation from the Prime Minister of Myanmar. He hoped that Premier Zhou could go to Yangon first to discuss the Asian and African issues at the meeting in advance. So Premier Zhou temporarily changed his itinerary and asked the delegation to postpone his departure and set off together after he came back. It was this temporary invitation that Premier Zhou avoided the fierce assassination of the Kuomintang. It was just that the passenger on the plane died tragically under the Kuomintang spy.
for the country and the people, exhausted all their lives
In addition to their early diplomatic style, Premier Zhou made great contributions to the stability of our country's socialist cause.
During the Cultural Revolution, Premier Zhou not only had to deal with the heavy daily government affairs, but also had to be careful of the cold guns and hidden arrows from the Gang of Four.
At that time, the Association of Foreign Friends invited two Turkish musicians from to China to visit and perform. Premier Zhou approved "Agree" in accordance with the principle of friendly exchanges. This matter is understandable. Unexpectedly, Jiang Qing and others used this as an opportunity to attack Premier Zhou and approved in the document: "The consequences of receiving capitalist literary and artistic groups are very serious."
Premier Zhou saw it and ordered: "In the future, we should receive as little as possible, or selectively, and it is impossible not to receive at all." Jiang Qing was very angry after seeing this and mobilized his accomplices Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan and others to accuse the Association for Foreign Affairs of promoting "untitled music, no social content" , and launched an action to criticize bourgeois music in major cities, attacking the invitation of musicians to "open the door to welcome the thief."
Under the attack of Jiang Qing and others, Premier Zhou was forced to be criticized and written to check.Subsequently, it expanded to the conference to criticize Zhou Enlai. At this time, Premier Zhou not only had to endure unprovoked disasters, but also had to endure physical illnesses - he was suffering from bladder cancer . Fortunately, Ye Jianying reported the situation to the central government in time, which alleviated the situation at that time.
and the famous "snail incident" . At that time, a central department ruled out the delegation to inspect abroad and planned to introduce a batch of production lines. Foreign companies gave glass snails as gifts. Unexpectedly, the Gang of Four attacked and said that this was an act of insulting the country, insulting China to follow behind like snail .
Gang of Four and others intend to use this incident to discredit and seize control of the Ministry of Foreign Trade. Premier Zhou hurriedly asked someone to investigate the truth and found that the snail was a mascot in the local area, symbolizing friendship, which saved the delegation members.
Premier Zhou worked no less than twelve hours a day. In his heart, the country and the people are far more important than anything else. After 1972, the Prime Minister's bladder cancer even worsened to the point where he would have hematuria every day. Even so, he was still overworked and slept less than five hours a day.
He loves the people. When the chef cooks, he often reminds him not to forget the "Yan'an spirit" and "I will eat what the people eat" , which is never special.
He lives in an old bungalow yard in the West Flower Hall of Zhongnanhai. He is not allowed to repair the pillars in the room if they are painted. The secretary helped him repair it while he was out. When he found out, he refused to stay. He said: "This living conditions are much better than Yan'an." Secretary could only take back all the old furniture so that he could come back to live.
He left no property in his life. After his death, his ashes were sprinkled across the motherland.
He spent his whole life, for the country and the people, truly devoted himself to his wholeheartedness until his death. He is the best prime minister of the people, and the Chinese people will always miss him.
