At the party’s life meeting, everyone can speak freely, carry out criticism and self-criticism, sweat and blush to achieve the effect of enhancing unity. It has to be said that Chairman Mao chose this method, but the problem is that Chen Boda has his own selfishness.
He was unwilling to speak, because since the Anti-Japanese War, Deng Xiaoping had been working on the front line, while Chen Boda was in the rear, and he had little contact with Deng Xiaoping and did not understand enough, so it was not appropriate to ask questions from Deng Xiaoping himself.
The reason is quite high-sounding. In fact, Chen Boda is a cunning person. He knows it is a job that offends people, so why don’t others do it? The other person Chen Boda recommended was Yang Chengwu, who was acting chief of staff at the time, with a high status and position, and was also qualified to participate in the Central Party Member Life Meeting.
Chairman Mao agreed with Chen Boda's suggestion. Chen Boda was a person who was interested, so he wrote Chairman Mao's opinions word by word on paper, then went to find Yang Chengwu, and in person reminded Yang Chengwu that this was what Chairman Mao asked Deng Xiaoping to speak.
Yang Chengwu felt very embarrassed after reading the content on the paper. He didn't understand the ins and outs of it, and he didn't have much interaction with Deng Xiaoping, so it was difficult to give Deng Xiaoping advice in person. But Chen Boda said that this is Chairman Mao’s highest instruction and must be implemented.
Yang Chengwu's Party principles has always been very strong. Since Chen Boda said this, he had no choice. Then at a party life meeting, Yang Chengwu took the note and brought it out to Deng Xiaoping in front of him.
After the meeting, Yang Chengwu was afraid that his own people would be rude and his opinions would not attract enough attention from Deng Xiaoping, so he went to Deng Xiaoping specifically to explain to him that his opinions were put forward by Chairman Mao and hoped that Deng Xiaoping would take them seriously, go to Chairman Mao to talk to him once and do some self-criticism.
This is all a manifestation of taking into account the overall situation. Deng Xiaoping understood Yang Chengwu's painstaking efforts and expressed deep gratitude to him.
However, Yang Chengwu felt very guilty. These words were not what he meant. He criticized Deng Xiaoping against his will. He was resentful for several years. Yang Chengwu revealed his thoughts to his old comrade-in-arms, and his old comrade-in-arms advised him to go to Deng Xiaoping to explain in person.
Yang Chengwu went to Deng Xiaoping's residence, met Deng Xiaoping, and kept himself in his heart for eight or nine years, and spoke up, and repeatedly apologized to Deng Xiaoping.
After listening to Yang Chengwu's words, Deng Xiaoping showed the demeanor of a great man and said with a smile, Chengwu, why do you still remember this little thing in your heart? If you don't mention it, I've forgotten it long ago.
Later, Deng Xiaoping served as the Chief of General Staff as the vice chairman of the Military Commission . Yang Chengwu re-appointed as the deputy chief of general staff and fully assisted Deng Xiaoping in the work of the General Staff.
