During the Anti-Japanese War , the famous agronomist Zhang Xinyi

was appointed as the director of the Gansu Agriculture Department: First, don’t have official positions, second, don’t have money, third, shameless

The famous agronomist Zhang Xinyi was a rural child who grew up in Gansu. He finally became a giant agronomist, founded my country’s agricultural statistics, and made outstanding contributions to agricultural economics . During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Zhang Xinyi was appointed as the director of Gansu Agriculture. In his inaugural speech, he said: He doesn’t want an official, he doesn’t want money, and he doesn’t have shame. As soon as these words were spoken, everyone was shocked. What he said is that you don’t have money or officials, it’s easy to understand. What does this shameless mean? Behind this shameless sentence

is a classmate relationship between him and Liang Shiqiu .

1914, Zhang Xinyi went to the first grade of junior high school at Lanzhou Middle School. At this time, a Gansu student should be selected to study at Tsinghua School . Tsinghua School (now Tsinghua University ) is a preparatory school for studying in the United States founded using Boxer Indemnity . According to the relevant agreement, Tsinghua Academy's preparatory students studying in the United States must be selected from all provinces across the country, and the quota will be selected according to the amount of funds borne. Gansu is poor and backward, and the amount of Boxer indemnities is not large, so he can only get one quota.

According to the requirements, the selected students must be between 11 and 13 years old, and must have a certain English foundation. At that time, it was very difficult to find students who met these two conditions, especially those who had studied English. In order to apply for the postal job, he studied English for 8 months with a young man from Hankou . In the end he stood out from the selection.

At that time, there were no long-distance buses, and there were no trains or planes. From Lanzhou to Beijing, it was basically a hike. After more than a month of trekking, I arrived in Beijing. After the entrance exam, he found that his age was inconsistent (at this time, Zhang Xinyi was already 17 years old). After many twists and turns, Zhang Xinyi finally became a formal student at Tsinghua Academy.

He is 5 years older than Liang Shiqiu and one year earlier than Liang Shiqiu when he entered Tsinghua School (Liang Shiqiu was admitted to Tsinghua School in 1915). The two have been classmates at Tsinghua School for seven years and are considered to be friends. In Liang Shiqiu's eyes, he should have both senior and brother. So, in 1983, Mr. Liang wrote a memorial article in Taiwan saying that he had two good friends in the agronomy community, one was Zhang Xinyi, a classmate and friend, and the other was Shen Zonghan . In normal times, Liang Shiqiu talks about the most with his children, so that his name is "common to the ears of Mr. Liang's daughter."

Zhang Xinyi studied at Tsinghua Academy for 8 years (1914-1922). During this period, various thoughts were constantly colliding and different associations were in turmoil. During his studies, in addition to completing all the homework and laying a solid foundation in English, he also studied the theories of Chinese schools of thought, Buddhism, Christianity, and ethics and morality. The most important thing is that he accepted the theory of knowledge and action in Wang Yangming and the national view of national reconciliation, which became his basic principles for dealing with people in the future.

1919, the May Fourth Movement broke out. He and his classmates participated in the movement and were detained for more than 10 days. After being released, he participated in social activities more actively. Soon, he formed a "Thick and Thick Society" with four people including Liang Shiqiu, Pan Guangdan, Shi Zhaoying (after one more person, a total of 5 people).

Why did you set up such a club? Later he recalled that the main purpose of establishing the Houbo Society was to oppose the unhealthy trends and evil spirits in the society at that time, and not be good people. He believed that they were "unnaturally bad and weak-skinned" and lacked in nature, which means that they lacked talent and should study hard and have no face. That is to say, they should not be merciless about the unhealthy trends and evil spirits in the society, so they named it Houbo Society.

Thick and thin society experience has a great impact on his words and deeds. In the 1940s, he served as the director of the Gansu Provincial Department of Construction. In his inaugural speech, he said that he did not want officials, did not want money, and was shameless. The so-called shameless means that he was not merciless in doing things, had unreasonable words and deeds, and immediately criticized and opposed hypocritical conspiracy.

When Liang Shiqiu got married, Zhang Xinyi was the best man.Not many people know about this matter now, and he has never talked about it. Mr. Liang wrote this specifically in his memoir "Dreams in Huaiyuan". Mr. Liang wrote that on February 11, 1927, a wedding ceremony was held at the European and American Alumni Association in Nanheyan, Beijing... On the day of the wedding, it was sunny and cold... Zhang Xinyi and Zhang Yujiu were male prime ministers, and Ji Shu (Mr. Liang's wife Cheng Jishu )'s twin classmates Feng Tang and Feng Di were female prime ministers. It was only after reading this record that I got up to find the relevant stories. Later, I found Mr. Zhang Xinyi's nephew, the retired teacher Mr. Zhang Duntian, who provided a lot of information and stories. However, this happened almost ten years ago.

In February 1950, Zhang Xinyi went from Shanghai to Beijing, stayed at Qianmen Hotel, and was appointed as the director of the Agricultural Bureau of the Central Financial and Economic Commission. At this time, Liang Shiqiu had also moved to Taiwan.

In 1983, the relevant media published Mr. Liang's memorial article, and the content attracted the attention of many interested people. Zhang Xinyi naturally saw the article too. On June 15, 1985, he wrote his first letter to Mr. Liang in 40 years. The letter was sent for nearly two months before it was received. On August 6, Mr. Liang received the letter. Mr. Liang was "greatly surprised" and immediately picked up his pen and wrote a reply. Mr. Liang’s letter was not long, with more than 600 words. In the letter, he said that he always thought that Zhang Xin was lost all of a sudden, and he planned to write an article to miss Zhang Xinyi, but he did not dare to write (because the sound of the straits was separated by the sound and information was misinformed, and Bing Xin had long passed away. Mr. Liang once wrote an article about "Ashen Bing Xin" for this. Unexpectedly, Mr. Liang left first.).

Mr. Liang wrote in his letter: "Now after knowing for forty years, you are still you, you are still living well, and I am still living well." Then, Mr. Liang passed on the news of the deaths of several Tsinghua School classmates to Zhang Xinyi one by one. In the letter, Mr. Liang also specifically mentioned his translation of the "Complete Works of Shakespeare".

Since then, there have been constant letters between them. On December 7, 1986, Zhang Xinyi also sent a New Year's greeting card to Mr. Liang. Unexpectedly, on November 3, 1987, Liang Shiqiu passed away due to myocardial infarction.

Shortly after Liang Shiqiu's death, his wife Han Jingqing made a special trip to Beijing to fulfill her wish. At the memorial service of European and American classmates, Zhang Xinyi was already 90 years old, but he still insisted on coming to the memorial service. On March 23, 1992, Zhang Xinyi died of illness in Beijing.

From then on, the story has become a legend and has been circulating.
