The 13 war criminals of the National Army did not qualify for the amnesty. Why did Chairman Mao insist on his release in 1975?

I remember that in many literary works and film and television dramas, we often hear this sentence: The People's Liberation Army treats prisoners preferentially. This is indeed the case in actual situations. Even with regard to war criminals, our army takes a lenient attitude. As long as it recognizes its mistakes and reforms it sincerely, it will definitely give it a chance.

After the victory of the Chinese revolution, almost all war criminals who behaved well and contritely received amnesties. The first batch of amnesties occurred in 1959, and there have been 5 amnesties since then , the last time The amnesty occurred in 1975.

For war criminals, apart from our party, I am afraid that no country in the world can be so magnanimous. No matter what you have done before, as long as you have a correct attitude, corrected your thinking, and are willing to accept labor reform, you will almost always get a chance to reform. This was most evident in the 1959 amnesty.

In this amnesty, two people are the most eye-catching. The first is the emperor Puyi . When he was a war criminal, it was not because of his origin, but because he and the Japanese engaged in the Puppet Manchukuo in the Northeast, which is unacceptable to the people of the whole country. But in prison, he performed well, so he was pardoned.

The other is the famous Kuomintang general Du Yuming . General Du is one of Chiang's most important generals. This talented student of Huangpu was one of the commanders of the national army in the Huaihai battle .

After he was imprisoned, he initially showed great resistance and rejection. Du Yuming was in poor health before Huaihai. He wanted to go to the United States for medical treatment, but he was sent to the front line by Jiang. So he can only walk on crutches, and he is strong on his body to direct the battle.

After being defeated and captured, Du Yuming committed suicide twice. He felt that it was impossible for the Communist Party to survive by what he did. Adding to the torture of illness, it would be better to die.

But to his surprise, the Communist Party not only treated him as an enemy general, but also considered that his body could not bear too heavy manual labor, so it only allowed him to grow vegetables and loosen the soil. Leisurely.

At the beginning, Yuming Du thought that the Communist Party was just acting like a superficial effort. But as time passed, he became more and more aware of his own insularity, so his attitude slowly changed, from his loyalty to Lao Jiang to the beginning to reflect on his mistakes. After being pardoned, Du Yuming voluntarily asked to stay, hoping to contribute to the country.

In February 1975, Chairman Mao reviewed the report on amnesty for prisoners of war submitted by relevant departments. There are still less than 300 war prisoners in custody, of which 13 are not eligible for amnesty.

After Chairman Mao finished reading,He proposed to release all war criminals, including those who did not meet the conditions of the amnesty, and also decided to increase the living expenses of the amnesty personnel.

This decision of Chairman Mao caused a lot of controversy at the time. Some staff members asked the chairman to report, why should we release all war criminals who did not meet the conditions for amnesty? Chairman Mao said that more than 20 years have passed since the war. What use is there if it is closed now? And for the masses, these Kuomintang generals are different from local tyrants and evil gentry. Many people and the masses do not know that there is no difference between killing and not killing.

History has proved that Chairman Mao’s approach is very wise. The act of our party's amnesty for war criminals sent a signal of peace to the Taiwan authorities. In 1975, the two sides of the strait were no longer as fierce as before, and most of the relatives and friends of these war criminals were in Taiwan. The release of them showed the mainland's friendly intentions.

For these amnesty war criminals, we adopt a policy of freedom to come and go. Regardless of whether the destination is Taiwan, the United States, or their hometown, they will be released and travel expenses will be provided. But the mainland was released, but the Taiwan authorities did not dare to accept it, for fear that mainland personnel would take the opportunity to sneak in. In contrast, the Kuomintang’s suspicion and our party’s leniency are in sharp contrast.

At that time, the international community repeatedly attacked and discredited China's war criminals policy. Such a straightforward release without any conditions is the most powerful counterattack against such rumors. Why not do it.

The amnesty for war criminals is Chairman Mao’s effort to fight for cross-strait reunification.Peace is also his greatest wish in his later years. It is not only Chairman Mao, but also the common wish of all of us in China. I hope that this day will come soon, which is the greatest comfort to the revolutionary martyrs of the year.
