"What military rank should be bestowed on this teacher?"
In 1955, after several years of development and deliberation, our army's modernization and regularization construction had a solid political and material foundation, and the Chinese People's Liberation Army military rank system with Chinese characteristics was born.
This is the first set of official military ranks implemented by the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Millions of soldiers who have made great contributions to New China will receive corresponding rank titles in this ranking evaluation.
However, Luo Ronghuan, who was responsible for the evaluation task, had a problem when he saw a name on the list.
Liu Ziqi——A revolutionary veteran who was a division commander as early as the Red Army period, participated in the Agrarian Revolution, the Anti-Japanese War and the War of Liberation, and made great contributions to the founding of New China.
In terms of qualifications, there are not many generals in the team who can match him. However, unlike other generals whose positions have been changed or promoted, more than 20 years have passed and Liu Ziqi has not been promoted to the first level. This teacher and commander during the Red Army is still sitting in the position of division commander.

Liu Ziqi
This puts Luo Ronghuan in trouble.
The evaluation title is too low and does not meet the teacher's qualifications, but the evaluation title is too high and exceeds the current teacher's superiors, which seems inappropriate.
Luo Ronghuan thought about it, and felt that whatever title he gave Liu Ziqi was not perfect.
So, what title was Liu Ziqi awarded in the end? Why hasn't this teacher been promoted to a higher level in 20 years?
After experiencing hardships at a young age, he resolutely joined the revolution.
Liu Ziqi was born in a poor family in Liuyang County, Hunan Province in 1900. His growth experience when he was young made him realize the necessity of revolution very early.
Liu Ziqi lost his father when he was young, and his brother was disabled. The burden on the family was heavy, and he had to take on the responsibility of supporting the family from a very young age.
However, due to the oppression of the landlords, even though Liu Ziqi worked hard all year round and the whole family worked hard, in the end they were still unable to have enough food and clothing.

When he was 15 years old, Liu Ziqi found another way to support his family and joined a weaving factory as a worker. In the factory, which was cold in winter and hot in summer, he worked for more than ten hours every day, gritting his teeth and trying hard to shoulder the burden of supporting his family.
However, in the dark era at that time, the treatment of workers was no better than that of farmers. They also suffered from oppression and exploitation by capitalists.
Therefore, Liu Ziqi worked hard for a whole year, but the money he earned was still difficult to maintain the basic life of his family.
When I was 19 years old, a famine occurred in Liuyang County, Hunan Province. This was a devastating blow to the peasant families who had difficulty in food and clothing and had no ability to resist risks.
During this famine, Liu Ziqi's family members starved to death one after another, and the two remaining sisters had to marry in order to survive. In such a big family, Liu Ziqi was left alone in the end.
When farmers are oppressed by landlords, when workers are exploited by capitalists, and they work hard but end up with their families and families destroyed , the young Liu Ziqi can be said to have suffered all the suffering in the world.
However, what is truly terrible is not suffering, but a future where hope is never seen.

Liu Ziqi fell into deep pain and confusion. He didn't understand why no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't help his family out of trouble. He didn't know where the hope was for millions of people at the bottom like him. Will it really come?
hope will come of course!
In dark times, a spark of hope is brewing. The revolutionary trend emerged, the May Fourth Movement broke out, and various progressive and equal ideas also surged around Liu Ziqi.
In 1926, revolutionary leader Chairman Mao returned to his hometown in Hunan, setting off an upsurge in the workers' and peasants' movement.
During this period, he successively published works such as "Analysis of All Classes in Chinese Society" and "Inspection Report on the Peasant Movement in Hunan", which pointed out the important position of peasant issues in the Chinese revolution and the extreme importance of the proletariat leading the peasant struggle.
Chairman Mao's series of works and progressive thoughts have cleared up the fog and guided the direction for the vast peasant masses who are in confusion and ignorance.

Chairman Mao in his youth
Inspired by this revolutionary trend, Liu Ziqi also officially embarked on the road of revolution. After
, he not only led workers to protest against capitalist exploitation, but also led many workers' movements, running and shouting many times to safeguard the interests of the working class and the peasantry.
In 1927, Liu Ziqi officially joined the Communist Party of China.
engaged in secret armed struggle and became the earliest teacher and commander of the Red Army.
At that time, Chiang Kai-shek betrayed the revolution and launched a counter-revolutionary coup in Shanghai. He united with reactionary groups and warlord forces to carry out a brutal bloodbath and persecution of revolutionary organizations and progressive people. A large number of Communists were killed, and much of our party's work was forced to go underground and be carried out secretly.
In order to protect the safety of his comrades, the Liuyang County Workers' Association was also forced to make a strategic shift, and Liu Ziqi also joined the local guerrillas and began to engage in secret armed struggle.
We all know that the Communist Party is a revolutionary team that comes out from the masses and is supported by the masses. After officially joining the Liuyang guerrillas, Liu Ziqi also began to take root in the countryside to engage in revolution.
After that, he organized the farmers for simple military training, and formed them into a team that could protect themselves and fight, which is what we often call "Red Guards".

In addition, Liu Ziqi also helped farmers to engage in production, publicized revolutionary and progressive ideas to them, and called on the workers and peasants to unite to resist the oppression of the landlord class and bourgeoisie .
With his unremitting efforts, the Red Guards grew stronger, the fire of revolution burned stronger and stronger, and the situation was excellent. However, this really stepped on the painful feet of the landlords.
The landlords who felt that their interests were threatened immediately launched a crazy revenge against Liu Ziqi.
In July 1928, Liu Ziqi's guerrilla headquarters was attacked by more than 1,000 people from three local landlord organizations in Liuyang County.
Due to the menace of the enemy and the overwhelming number of people, everyone advised Liu Ziqi to retreat quickly and avoid the enemy for the time being.
However, Liu Ziqi believes that the arrogance of the landlord class cannot be encouraged. It is necessary to win a beautiful victory and show it to the people, so that they understand that the landlord class is just a paper tiger and is not terrible.

This is a legendary battle in which less defeats more. In this battle, Liu Ziqi's outstanding command and combat ability was fully demonstrated.
He first took advantage of the terrain and set up a fake headquarters to confuse the enemy's sight. Then more than 100 soldiers were sent to ambush the enemies halfway and give them a head-on attack.
Finally, he led the soldiers to lure the enemy deep into the valley where they had been ambushed in advance, and beat them to pieces here!
In this battle, the guerrillas wiped out more than 200 enemies, captured more than 500 enemies, and seized a large number of weapons and ammunition. It was a great victory!
Liu Ziqi became famous in this battle, and was soon promoted to the commander of the Second Division of the Liuyang Red Guard Army.
Being able to become a division commander when the Red Army was just established, Liu Ziqi's promotion speed is not bad, and his future is not bad.
You must know that many famous generals later either had not started the revolution at this time, or they were just new recruits in the Red Army.
Even Xu Shiyou, the later famous general, had just become the commander of the Red Army at this time, and his position was far lower than that of Liu Ziqi.

Xu Shiyou
After becoming the division commander, Liu Ziqi not only participated in the battle of Changsha, followed the Red Army in the south and north, but also participated in many anti-encirclement and suppression struggles. During the 25,000-mile Long March of the Red Army, he also left a trace of his unyielding fighting.
Logically speaking, with his seniority and rich combat experience, Liu Ziqi will definitely rise from the rank of division commander in the future.
However, what is unexpected is that in the following 20 years, Liu Ziqi had many ups and downs, but in the end he still sat in the position of teacher.
The most important reason for this is that Liu Ziqi has never been arrogant. After realizing his shortcomings, he chose to take the initiative to learn and give opportunities to more capable people.
20 years later, the division commander is still the division commander
Although the secret armed struggle was well done and the battle was fought beautifully, Liu Ziqi knew that he still lacked a lot since he had never read a book since he was a child.
In 1930, Liu Ziqi, commander of the Second Division of the Liuyang Red Guards, participated in the battle against Changsha.

After the battle, the Central Red Army moved to the Hunan and Jiangxi regions, and the troops were reorganized again.
While everyone else was waiting for the results of the military reorganization, Liu Ziqi once again realized the shortcomings of his abilities from the war.
So he took the initiative to apply to the organization, hoping to resign from the position of division commander and go to the camp school of the Red Army to study. When
's generals learned about this, they were shocked and rushed to persuade him: You have become a teacher, how can you give up at this time and go back to be a student?
However, Liu Ziqi does not value fame and fortune. In his opinion, fighting and winning the war is the most important thing.

Because he has never read a book since he was a child, he can't even read the words now, and he can't understand operational maps and terrain maps. How can such a division commander lead the soldiers to fight well and win the battle?
Therefore, Liu Ziqi firmly believes: Rather than striving for a higher position, the most important thing at present is to improve one's abilities through learning.
Only by learning cultural knowledge and revolutionary ideas well can we go further and carry out revolution better in the future.
In the camp school of the First Red Army, Liu Ziqi studied eagerly for more than five months, enriching his knowledge and improving his abilities. After graduating from
, Liu Ziqi was assigned to the Thirteenth Regiment of the Jiangxi Independent Fifth Division as the regiment leader and political commissar. Soon after, he was promoted to the commander of the Second Division of the Hunan-Jiangxi Military Region.

Liu Ziqi's family
In 1933, Liu Ziqi returned to his "old position" and began to serve as the division commander of the Third Division of the Hunan-Jiangxi Military Region, and soon became the commander of the Third Division Headquarters of the Hunan-Jiangxi Military Region. After
, he not only led his troops to participate in many anti-encirclement and suppression battles, participated in the establishment of the revolutionary base areas of Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou, but also participated in the great 25,000-mile Long March.
During this period, his position changed several times, from regimental commander to commander to chief of staff, but most of the time, he served as division commander.
After gaining a lot from his first systematic study, Liu Ziqi realized the importance of learning even more. In December 1936, he once again took the initiative to participate in the second phase of study at Red Army University.
During the Anti-Japanese War, the Kuomintang and the Communist Party jointly resisted Japan. Liu Ziqi partnered with General Wang Zhen and began to serve as the chief of staff of the 359th Brigade of the 120th Division of the Eighth Route Army.
They cooperated with each other to launch many anti-"mopping up" wars, ambushing the Japanese army on the front line, destroying the Japanese army's transportation lines, and made great contributions to the victory of the Anti-Japanese War.
It is worth mentioning that General Wang Zhen was awarded the rank of general when he was awarded the title in 1955.

In 1940, Liu Ziqi was promoted to deputy commander of the Fourth Division of the Jizhong Military Region, and led his troops to open up a large revolutionary base area in the Jizhong region, which greatly strengthened the revolutionary forces.
This promotion to deputy commander is an excellent start for Liu Ziqi, who has always been in the position of division commander. However, Liu Ziqi once again showed people how little he cares about fame and fortune.
In 1942, Liu Ziqi took the initiative to study in the First Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. After completing his studies, he attended the Seventh National Congress of the Communist Party of China as a member of the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei delegation.

During the War of Liberation, Liu Ziqi rushed to the Northeast with the army to fight. Here, he successively served as the security commander of Harbin and the commander of the Third Division of the Songjiang Military Region of the Northeast People's Autonomous Army.
As an important industrial producing area, the importance of Northeast China on the overall battlefield is self-evident. On this battlefield, Liu Ziqi also participated in many important battles and made considerable achievements.
Although his positions changed repeatedly from security commander to commander to brigade commander, at the end of the Liberation War, Liu Ziqi returned to his old position as division commander and began to serve as the division commander of the 165th Division of the Fourth Field.
After 20 years of going around, Liu Ziqi’s every rise and fall had a specific reason. This teacher and commander in the earliest days of the Red Army eventually became a division commander after the War of Liberation.

Military rank assessment, the teacher has no complaints
After the founding of New China, after five years of deliberation and accumulation, our country has been moving in the direction of institutionalization. In 1955, the military rank system of the Chinese People's Liberation Army with Chinese characteristics was born.
The task of ranking was handed over to the General Cadre Management Office led by Luo Ronghuan, and the evaluation criteria were mainly based on key points such as seniority, military merit, and the position before the title was awarded.
In terms of qualifications and military exploits, Liu Ziqi certainly has nothing to say, and the rank of lieutenant general is completely justified. But when it came to his position before being awarded the title, he suffered a bit.

Luo Ronghuan
After the founding of New China, Liu Ziqi, who had been in the position of division commander for more than 20 years, successively served as the commander of the Chenzhou Military Division of the Hunan Military Region and the chief of staff of the Hunan Military Region. At the time of the promotion, he was the deputy commander of the Guangdong Provincial Military Region.
According to the ranking standards at that time, the highest deputy commander of a provincial military region was major general, and most of them had the rank of major.
If the teacher is rated too low, it will inevitably make people feel wronged by the teacher. However, if the teacher is rated too high, his military rank will be on the same level as or even higher than his superiors, which is also inappropriate.
After careful consideration, Luo Ronghuan finally decided to award Liu Ziqi the rank of major general.

Worried that Liu Ziqi would be dissatisfied because of this, Luo Ronghuan even went to the teacher to explain the considerations and reasons.
However, it can also be seen from Liu Ziqi's choice to give up his position several times and take the initiative to study. This revolutionary veteran has a high political consciousness and takes fame and fortune very lightly.
He directly expressed his position to Luo Ronghuan: I will accept it no matter what the military rank is.
In Liu Ziqi's view, he joined the revolution and fought desperately so that the common people would no longer live a miserable and hopeless life like himself.
Now that New China has been established, the people have also lived a good life, and everything he asked for has been realized. So what does it matter whether the military rank is high or low?

In that dark age, it was precisely because the revolutionary predecessors, like Liu Ziqi, put personal fame and fortune last and took saving the people and the country as their own responsibility, that we finally ended a century of darkness and ushered in a new China of hope and light.
pays tribute to teachers and elders, and pays tribute to every revolutionary hero who shed blood and sacrificed for New China!
