On September 30, 1949, the People's Heroes Monument was laid in Tiananmen Square . After years of baptism, the " People's Heroes Immortal " 8 big words are more and more brilliant, engraving the Chinese nation's admiration for the martyrs. In 2014, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed a decision to establish September 30 as the "Martyrs' Day". Since then, on this day of each year, public memorial activities will be held across the country to commemorate the heroes and pay tribute to the heroes in the name of the country.
I remember that on September 30, 2021, as a representative of retired veterans, I came to Tongling Martyrs Cemetery to participate in the Tongling City 8th Martyrs’ Day public memorial activity. On that morning, the Tongling Martyrs Cemetery seemed particularly solemn and solemn. Representatives from all fronts of the city stood in front of the Lemaoshan Martyrs Memorial Tower, with a solemn and serious expression. They paid silence to the martyrs and presented flower baskets to commemorate the great achievements of the revolutionary martyrs, commemorate the immortal heroic souls of the revolutionary martyrs, and express their infinite admiration for the revolutionary martyrs. Afterwards, all the personnel circled the field along the Martyrs Memorial Tower in sequence, presented flowers to the Martyrs Memorial Tower and stopped to pay tribute to them.
Tongling is the red hot land where revolutionary fire appeared earlier in southern Anhui. In January 1931, Lingxiao and others established Tongling Special Branch of the Communist Party of China in Qianwan Village, Xilian Town, Yi'an District. This was the earliest underground party organization established in Tongling area that year.
The spark can start a prairie fire! Under the strong leadership of the Tongling Party Organization, the Tongling people persisted in fighting in the state of strong enemy and weak us for a long time in the state of strong enemy and weak enemy. Since the New Fourth Army entered Tongling in 1938, the old Tongling area has been an important part of the Wanjiang base area. During the Southern Anhui Incident, the Tongling Party Organization covered the breakout of the New Fourth Army and crossed the blockade and crossed the Yangtze River ; in the Japanese, puppet and stubborn siege, it insisted on armed struggle, and ensured the smooth communication between the Jiangnan region and the 7th Division of the New Fourth Army in Jiangbei; during the War of Liberation, the Tongling Party Organization and underground workers actively participated in the crossing of the river and completed the mission to cooperate with the People's Liberation Army's crossing the river and fighting, and made important contributions to the overall victory of the entire crossing the river and the liberation of the whole China.
Tongling has recorded the unique and special honors of "The First City of Liberation in the South of Jiangnan" and " The First Ship of Crossing the River Landing Point" . According to historical records, there were more than 800 martyrs who died bravely during the Anti-Japanese and Liberation Wars alone. There is a "Tongling Martyrs' Heroes Wall" in Tongling Martyrs Cemetery, which records the names of 1,605 Tongling and the revolutionary martyrs who died in Tongling.
In order to commemorate the great achievements of the revolutionary martyrs and inspire future generations to strive to revitalize China and build Tongling, the former Tongling County Party Committee and County Government built the Martyrs Memorial Tower on the top of Limao Mountain in 1958, named Tongling Martyrs Tower, which is a collective symbol of the revolutionary martyrs in Tongling area. In October 1992, the former county party committee and county government maintained the tower body and strengthened the greening work around the Martyrs Tower. In 2006, the former county party committee and county government once again repaired the Martyrs' Tower, and also built a 1,000-square-meter memorial square and a Shangshan cement road about 340 meters long. The Martyrs Tower is made of steel and concrete, with a height of 30 meters. The tower is a three-story square solid building. The east, south, west and north are engraved with "bright sun and moon", "magnificent mountains and rivers", "everyday", and "every evergreen" sixteen big characters. Every year around the Qingming Festival, Tongling City, district departments, units, schools, and people from all walks of life come here to pay homage to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs, and never forget yesterday, cherish today, and yearn for tomorrow.
Obviously, the annual public memorial activities are a re-education of the history of the Party and military history, an inspiration of the spiritual power of heroes, and a baptism of the soul. The present day of of the People's Republic of China is exchanged for the blood and life of countless martyrs.There is no doubt that commemorating heroes and paying tribute to heroes contains a great spiritual power. Whether it is revolutionary leaders, heroes and models or ordinary strugglers, they have dedicated everything they have to the motherland and the people fearlessly.
Therefore, the country chose September 30 as the martyrs' anniversary. This is not only an eternal memory of the people's hero , which has been for national independence, prosperity and people's freedom and happiness since the Opium War, but also a solemn look back on the history of the People's Republic, and a solemn commitment to the thousands of sacrificed martyrs, demonstrating the revolutionary sentiment of "not forgetting to dig wells when eating water" and not forgetting to worship martyrs on National Day.
