This is a photo taken in 1991 when Zhang Wannian, the commander of the Jinan Military Region, visited the old leader Zeng Siyu. In 1969, the 127th Division of the 43rd Army, which was originally affiliated to the Guangzhou Military Region, was moved to Luoyang, Henan, and became affiliated to the Wuhan Military Region. Zhang Wannian was the commander of the 127th Division at the time, and Zeng Siyu was the commander of the Wuhan Military Region.

Zhang Wannian became Zeng Siyu's subordinate. After the September 13th Incident, Guan Guanglie, the political commissar of Tiejun Division, was censored because he had been the secretary in Lin Biao's office. Naturally, Zhang Wannian was also implicated and censored. During that period, Zhang Wannian suffered a lot and endured the humiliation. While being censored, he had to lead the troops.

Under this situation, Zhang Wannian took the initiative to resign as division commander. Zeng Siyu trusted him and said, Zhang Wannian is still the division commander, review must be carried out, and troop training cannot be relaxed. Zeng Siyu also specifically told Zhang Wannian: You are the division commander, and if something goes wrong with the Tiejun division, I will ask you . This is the greatest trust in Zhang Wannian.

In 1982, Zhang Wannian was promoted to deputy commander of the Wuhan Military Region. In the same year, Zhou Shizhong was transferred to commander of the Wuhan Military Region. Zhang Wannian became Zhou Shizhong's deputy. Zhou Shizhong is the general of the third field army, and Zhang Wannian is the general of the fourth field army.

They have not crossed paths before, but they have one thing in common. They are both very capable warriors, dedicated to serving the public, and high-spirited. Zhang Wannian was very capable, and Zhou Shizhong was also very knowledgeable and relied heavily on Zhang Wannian. In 1985, the Wuhan Military Region was abolished and Zhou Shizhong withdrew from his leadership position. Where was Zhang Wannian?

Look again, the two photos above. As mentioned earlier, the Wuhan Military Region was abolished and Zhang Wannian was appointed deputy commander of the Guangzhou Military Region. The commander of the Guangzhou Military Region at that time was named You Taizhong, a general in Liu and Deng's army and one of the Three Musketeers under Wang Jinshan.

In the first photo, Zhang Wannian is on the first right and You Taizhong is on the second right. Although Zhang Wannian is a deputy, he has a majestic look and is powerful without being angry. Even around his boss, he is intimidating and domineering. Because Zhang Wannian is a recognized general, he will be valued wherever he goes.

Although You Taizhong had nothing to do with Zhang Wannian before, he also valued Zhang Wannian very much and gave Zhang Wannian the responsibility for the most important troop training work in the military region. In 1987, You Taizhong resigned, and it was Zhang Wannian who succeeded him as commander of the military region.

Zhang Wannian's ability to become a regular employee was obviously inseparable from You Taizhong's recommendation.Zhang Wannian respected You Taizhong very much. The second photo was taken in 1996. Zhang Wannian, who had already served as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, went to visit the old leader You Taizhong at his home. Two years later, You Taizhong died.

This is a precious photo of Zhang Wannian and Deng Xiaoping. Behind them is Deng Xiaoping's youngest daughter Deng Rong. During Zhang Wannian's military life, there were many superiors who appreciated and promoted him. His most important boss was Deng Xiaoping.

That was in 1979. Zhang Wannian summarized his experience of leading troops in war for many years and published an article in the "Liberation Army Daily", which was about concentrating superior forces to fight a war of annihilation. Deng Xiaoping saw this paper and remembered Zhang Wannian's name.

Through this paper, Deng Xiaoping discerned talents and determined that Zhang Wannian was a general who truly led troops to fight. Zhang Wannian made outstanding achievements in the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam, and was quickly promoted to important leadership positions until he became the vice chairman of the Military Commission.
