In April 1948, appointed by the party organization, Mao Peichun suffered a heroic death in battle and died at the age of 31 while following the 17th division of Hu Zongnan withdrawing from Yan'an.

Influenced by progressive thinking in his youth, Mao Peichun actively participated in the student movement. Later, he entered the Kuomintang Central Military Model Prison Medical Service as a nurse. Here, he came into contact with a group of Communist Party members with revolutionary and progressive ideas, which had an important influence on his active involvement in the revolution in the future. On the eve of the full-scale outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, a wave of anti-Japanese war was set off throughout the country. Family and national hatreds and ethnic hatred further aroused Mao Peichun's patriotic enthusiasm. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Mao Peichun resolutely joined the revolution, arrived in Yan'an and joined the Communist Party of China honorably. During his stay in Yan'an, Mao Peichun was selected and transferred to a special training class held by the Security Office of the Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region.

Mao Peichun was assigned by the party organization to break into Yan Xishan's army. During the incubation period, he worked actively and soon gained the trust and reuse of the enemy. At the same time, he collected information extensively, and soon discovered that Yan Xishan pretended to resist Japan, secretly colluding with Japanese invaders, and looking for opportunities to oppose communism. He transmitted this important information to the Party Central Committee and played an important role for our party to crack down on Yan Xishan's anti-communist attack.

Under the appointment of the party organization, Mao Peichun moved from Yan Xishan's army to the Kuomintang's Luochuan party headquarters, and then joined Hu Zongnan's Xi'an Gendarmerie Headquarters as a major staff officer. In 1943, the Kuomintang flagrantly set off an anti-Communist climax.Attempt to surround Yan'an with 150,000 troops. The dangerous terrain of Yetai Mountain is an important military target for the enemy and us to fight for. In order to ensure the absolute victory of the Yetaishan battle, the party organization ordered Mao Peichun to quickly verify the enemy's exact military strength. Regardless of personal safety, Mao Peichun went to the forward position and learned that the enemy went to Yetai Mountain not by the strength of one division, but by a reinforced division composed of two divisions, and there were other troops accompanying the action, and the military equipment was also very strong. Mao Peichun immediately reported the intelligence to the party organization. The Party Central Committee sent additional troops to quickly wipe out all the enemy forces that invaded Yetai Mountain, and achieved a full victory in the Yetai Mountain counterattack.

Under the guidance of Mao Peichun's accurate intelligence, our army continuously dealt heavy blows to the enemy and beat Hu Zongnan's troops into a dilemma. At the beginning of 1948, our Northwest Field Army wiped out more than 30,000 Hu Zongnan troops in the Battle of Yichuan, and then successfully recovered Yan'an.

Yan'an Defence Battle After the victory, Hu Zongnan saw the situation not good and prepared to withdraw his troops. Out of overall consideration of the war situation, the party organization asked Mao Peichun to "retreat with the enemy and continue to work." On April 27, 1948, when Mao Peichun followed the retreating 17th Division of Hu Zongnan through Baishui County was rushing across the Luohe , he was stray bullet and died heroically.

After Mao Peichun's death, Yan'an military and civilians held a grand memorial meeting for him to commemorate his legendary life.
