Wallace Hartley's Violin
As the Titanic sank, violinist Wallace Hartley and his fellow musicians continued to play. Their final song, "My God Is Closer to You," was reportedly performed until they could no longer float. One surviving passenger claimed that Hartley's last words to his bandmates were: "Gentlemen, I bid you farewell." As a flotation device, and a gift violin given to him by his fiancée Maria Robinson inside. Hartley's body was found 10 days later, along with his violin damaged by the sea. His fiancée then demanded that it be taken back, although the instrument is believed to have been lost.
In 2006, an amateur musician found the violin in Maria Robinson's attic.The ancient instrument still has a nameplate that reads: "Dedicated to Wallace on the occasion of our engagement. From Maria." After seven years of research, the violin was confirmed to be authentic and was found in 2013. auction. In the end, the violin sold for a whopping $1.7 million and is considered one of the most important artifacts ever found on the Titanic.
Bejeweled Roubaix set
A Renault CB coupe owned by first-class passenger William Carter, believed to be the only car brought on board. Carter and his family both survived the sinking, and he later filed a $5,000 insurance claim for his new car.
In 11911, Sangorski & Sutcliffe published a particularly sumptuous Roubaix. It has a Moroccan leather cover decorated with embroidered peacocks and over a thousand gold gems. After the impressive book was exhibited in the UK, it sold to an American buyer for just over $2,000. It was then loaded onto the Titanic and shipped to its new owner.
If the Rubaish set is salvaged from the ocean, it is estimated to be worth $120,000.
A 1912 Renault CB Type Coupe
The Renault CB Coupe owned by first-class passenger William Carter and believed to be the only car brought on board. Carter and his family both survived the sinking, and he later filed a $5,000 insurance claim for his new car.
Historians say the Renault was locked up in a cargo hold at the front of the ship, which is still largely intact on the seafloor. While the actual value of the recovered vehicle is unknown, in 2003 a similar Renault sold at auction for $269,500.If the original Titanic can be recovered, it will surely sell for millions of dollars.
Four chests of opium
John Jacob Astor IV, one of the richest men in the world, also sank with the Titanic. The Astor family in the United States made their fortune from the fur trade and later on opium. In 1909, however, the U.S. Congress outlawed "smoking opium".
Somehow, four boxes of opium originally belonging to Astor were still aboard the Titanic, only to sink to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
Manuscripts of Joseph Conrad
898, Joseph Conrad's The Uneasy Tales was published. This collection of short stories includes Conrad's third short story, "Karion: Memories."
Conrad sent a handwritten copy of Karion: Memories to an American collector. The manuscript was delivered to the Titanic's mailroom along with seven million other copies of the mail now lying underwater.
Five Steinway grand pianos
Underwater footage of the wreck of the Titanic shows a nearly intact grand piano still standing there. In fact, there are 5 grand pianos on board, 3 of which are first class. Among the three pianos is Steinway's crown jewel, the Model B piano, a Model B custom-built for the ship. There is also a Model R piano, which was discontinued in 1942, and a Model K piano, which is still in production today.
Steinway's refurbished 1912 Model M piano was recently auctioned for nearly $35,000; this is when you imagine how much a truly sunk piano is worth.
A painting by Merry Joseph Blandell
The Titanic sank with many expensive artworks on board - but thankfully no Picasso's work depicted in the James Cameron blockbuster. One of the artworks on board is La Circassienne au Bain, 1814 by artist Merry Joseph Blandel.
This piece was brought on board by Swedish businessman Mauritz Håkan Björnström-Steffansson. He survived the disaster and later sought $100,000 in damages for the lost painting. And this is the largest claim ever made by White Star Line on a single item.
Jewelry for First Class Passengers
The jewelry includes necklaces, rings, brooches, cufflinks and even a pocket watch. Scientists claim that the tanning process that makes the leather bag protects the jewelry from underwater microbes. Who knows, though, what else of value has sunk with the ship?
The first prose of Francis Bacon
912, the collector Henry Elkins Widener went on a book-seeking trip to England. There he bought a rare miniature version of the essays first published in 1598 by the famous English philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon.
Widener took his astonishing discovery with him aboard the Titanic. When disaster struck, he got his mother and her maid on a lifeboat, and Widener himself was not so lucky. He and his precious book were eventually overwhelmed by the waves. It is said that Bacon's book was stuffed into the pocket of his tuxedo.
War hero Giuseppe-Autographed photo of Garibaldi
Emilio Ilario Giuseppe Portaluppi is on Titan after visiting his native Italy Nick returned to America. Among his valuables, Portarupi claimed he carried a signed photo of Italian war hero Giuseppe Garibaldi. Portarupi later filed a $3,000 insurance claim for the photo.
Portaruppi was one of four very lucky people who were rescued when lifeboat No. 14 returned to look for survivors. According to some reports, he survived by clinging to a block of ice.
Porcelain plates and mugs
Each cabin on the Titanic had a different piece of china, and many of the plates still sank to the bottom of the sea intact.
A replica of the Titanic plate, a popular item for collectors. In 2012, when some real plates and cups were auctioned along with other items, the value of the entire collection was estimated to be as high as $189 million.
