Sony restricts PlayStation game purchases to internal stores, causing dissatisfaction among players

Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC has been sued for an alleged unlawful monopoly that restricts the purchase of PlayStation games to its in-house store.

The Japanese tech giant could face a class-action lawsuit from gamers, saying it stopped allowing third parties including Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart to sell downloads of PlayStation games two years ago, according to Bloomberg. code. This makes the Sony PlayStation Store the only official source to buy any digital PlayStation game. In other words, some players claim that Sony is creating a monopoly in the market.

Sony's monopoly position allows it to charge ultra-competitive prices for digital PlayStation games, far higher than physical games sold in a competitive retail market, and far higher than digital games, according to consumers who sued Prices in the retail market. The source further added that consumers could end up spending 175% more on downloadable games than the same games with discs.

So far, Sony has not responded to any questions about the lawsuit.
