In ancient times, emperors, generals and ministers of all dynasties would choose a geomantic treasure land for themselves as a cemetery before their death. The Empress Dowager Cixi, as the de facto ruler of the late Qing Dynasty, was no exception. He is a very superstitious person. He believes that there will be an afterlife after death, so the cemetery where a person lives after death must be luxurious, so that he can enjoy the same glory and wealth as when he was alive.
In 1873 AD, Emperor Tongzhi personally surveyed the Feng Shui and renamed the selected Feng Shui treasure Mount Putuo to Putuo Jade, and designated it as the burial place of his mother Empress a hundred years later. Cixi's mausoleum was designed and constructed by the famous architectural designer Lei Tingchang . However, after the mausoleum was completed, Cixi was still dissatisfied with the fact that it was rebuilt again in the 21st year of Guangxu's reign. The Qingdong Mausoleum where Cixi was buried was a huge project, which cost a lot of manpower and material resources, as well as a lot of people's wealth and anointing. After decades of construction, it was finally completed in 1908, the 34th year of Guangxu's reign.
Cixi's mausoleum was the most luxurious and expensive in the late Qing Dynasty. It is said that during the construction, Cixi made a request that stumped many skilled craftsmen. That is, there should be no vegetation on your tomb. In fact, many emperors and generals hope that there will be many precious flowers and trees next to their tombs to show their merits during their lifetime. It is said that lush foliage in the tomb is good for future generations.
Cixi’s behavior puzzled many people. The reason why Cixi made the decision that there should be no grass on her mausoleum was based on an idiom, which is that grass that falls off becomes a bandit. I think I am the supreme ruler of and the Qing Dynasty . How can I turn into a bandit after my death? The idiom "falling off grass and becoming a bandit" roughly means that some rabble in the rivers and lakes have no way out, and going up the mountain to become bandits is a derogatory term. Cixi felt that if grass grew on her grave, she would be no different from a grass bandit. Therefore, Cixi ordered Prince Chun Yixuan who was responsible for building the Eastern Tomb of the Qing Dynasty. No matter what method is used, not a single blade of grass can grow on the cemetery. It must be ensured that not a single blade of grass grows.
Prince Chun Yixuan did encounter a problem. In order to satisfy the Empress Dowager Cixi's wish, he summoned all the skilled craftsmen to discuss countermeasures. Finally, when everyone looked through historical materials, they found that in the Western Xia Dynasty, there was a record of the emperor's tomb being barren of grass. It is said that they introduced the frying method at that time, which is to fry the soil covering the tomb in a large pot and then smoke it. In this way, the soil loses nutrients, loses fertility, and grass seeds are destroyed, so grass will not grow. Later, after experiments, this method was somewhat effective, but it could not guarantee that the tomb would be free of grass for a long time.
Someone suggested mixing raw soil and saltpeter together, adding sulfur and stir-frying them together in a large pot. In this way, even after the weeds fly, it is impossible for to take root and . Later, after personal testing on the spot, I found that this effect is very good. Finally finding an effective method, Prince Chun immediately ordered the craftsmen to place more than a hundred large pots at the construction site, stir-fry the soil mixed with sulfur repeatedly in the pot, and then cover the tomb of Cixi with the fried soil. Finally, it was done. Sure enough, there was no grass growing on Cixi's tomb.
But I never expected that more than twenty years after the death of Empress Dowager Cixi, his barren Qingdong Mausoleum would be turned upside down by the warlord leader Sun Dianying . However, this seems to be the time when Cixi's mausoleum has truly become restless, with not even a blade of grass growing.
