Early career

Denzel Washington was born in 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York, USA. His mother is a beauty salon owner, and his father is an employee of the New York City Water Department and also works at the local S. Klein department store.

Washington attended Pennington-Grimes Elementary School in Mount Vernon until 1968. When he was 14, his parents divorced and his mother sent him to the Oakland Military Academy private prep school in New Windsor, New York.

After graduating from Oakland, he attended Continental High School in Daytona Beach, Florida from 1970 to 1971. He was interested in Texas Tech: "I grew up on the Boys Club in Mount Vernon, and we were the Red Raiders. So when I got to high school, I wanted to go to Texas Tech in Lubbock. Polytechnic because they were called the Red Raiders and their uniforms were a lot like ours."

He earned a bachelor's degree in drama and journalism from Fordham University in 1977. While at Fordham, he played guard on the varsity basketball team under the guidance of coach P.J. Carlesimo. Washington later took a semester off to work as the creative arts director for an overnight summer camp at the Sloan YMCA in Lakeville, Connecticut. He participated in a staff talent show for campers and a co-worker suggested he try acting.

That fall, with a new goal in mind, Washington returned to Fordham. He entered Lincoln Center to study acting, and performed in Eugene O'Neill 's "The Emperor Jones" and Shakespeare 's " Othello ". He then attended the American Conservatory of Drama in San Francisco, California, where he stayed for a year before returning to New York to begin his professional acting career.
