If the school does a good job in reading, the overall teaching quality will not be bad.

Some time ago, more than 40 principals of primary and junior high schools in the county visited Chiping, Shandong Province to inspect the reading teaching reform in the county. After listening to the experience introduction of the County Education Bureau, I followed the principal of the junior high school to Chiping County Zhenxing Middle School and listened to the experience introduction of the school's "Sunshine Literacy" program. While visiting the reading classroom, I also listened to a reading demonstration class. According to the principal of the school, since the school's "Sunshine Literacy" program was implemented nearly ten years ago, the teaching quality has ranked first among more than 40 junior high schools in Liaocheng City for seven consecutive years.
What kind of plan is this? It has such magic power? Through on-site inspection, we learned that the school’s Chinese subject implements a “3+2+1” system, that is, there are 6 Chinese classes per week, of which 3 classes are for teachers to handle teaching materials, 2 classes are for students’ extracurricular reading, and 1 class is for reading and writing demonstrations. In this way, in the three years of junior high school, students not only completed the extracurricular reading list specified by the curriculum standards, but also expanded their reading scope, read some ancient and modern Chinese and foreign classics, and memorized a large number of classic poems.
In addition, this system not only promotes the improvement of teaching quality, but also promotes the development of students' comprehensive quality. After listening to the reading and writing demonstration class, many principals clearly felt that the students in this school were optimistic, quick-thinking, had their own unique views on reading and writing, and were good at expressing themselves with accurate and fluent language.
For a long time, Chinese language teaching has been almost based on textbooks. Teachers only need to teach a few texts in the textbooks each semester and students can cope with the midterm and final exams, and they are considered successful. As a result, after more than ten years from primary school to middle school, students, in addition to being able to read a few sample articles in textbooks, are obviously afraid of reading extracurricular articles and cannot use the methods learned in class to read independently. Such reading level not only affects students' learning in other subjects, but also affects students' future development.
Why does reading affect the overall teaching quality? Educator Suhomlinsky once said: "A child who does not read is a potentially poor student in learning." Based on his many years of research, he gave a very clear explanation of the relationship between reading and learning ability. He said: "30 years of experience have convinced me that students' intellectual development depends on good reading ability. Anyone who is not good at reading is not good at thinking." At the same time, he also pointed out Excluding the disadvantages of insufficient reading ability: "Why are some students who were smart, well-understood, diligent and inquiring in childhood, but in their teenage years, their intelligence has declined, their attitude towards knowledge is cold, and their minds are not flexible? It's because they can't read!"
Modern psychology also has a lot of research on this. From the learning theories of psychology representatives such as Piaget, Bruner, and Ausubel, we can see two key points: first, the development of thinking is closely related to the development of the language system; second, learning new knowledge depends on the existing intellectual background. Reading is an activity that uses language symbols as a medium and contains rich content that transcends real life. It will allow the reader's language system to develop better, and at the same time, it can enrich his or her intellectual background, thereby making their thinking ability and ability to learn new knowledge stronger.
It is not difficult to explain why the teaching quality of Zhenxing Middle School has been ranked first for many years. The more students read, the stronger their learning ability will naturally be. When a student consciously takes the initiative to learn knowledge in other subjects, his rich language and intellectual background will allow him to easily understand relevant knowledge and gain a sense of accomplishment. This sense of accomplishment can encourage him to learn more proactively. For students who read less, their language and intellectual background are pale, making their learning ability weaker. In the face of more and more difficult and more knowledge, he will gradually become unable to do what he wants, and his frustration will increase, making him less confident and less interested in learning. If the reading ability of the student group is poor, the improvement of the overall teaching quality of the school will be lost.
In the face of the new round of college entrance examination reform, there is a slogan that is popular in the education circle, that is, " Those who are good at Chinese will win the college entrance examination, and those who are good at Chinese will win the world.", but I think a more accurate statement should be " Those who are good at reading will win the college entrance examination.". Wen Rumin, editor-in-chief of Chinese textbooks at the Ministry of Education, once said: "The final goal of the Chinese college entrance examination is to ensure that 15% of people cannot finish it." Judging from the Chinese test questions of this year's national college entrance examination, extracurricular reading accounts for a large proportion. Without a certain amount of extracurricular reading, it is difficult for students to obtain high scores. The biggest problem in current Chinese teaching is that students only learn textbooks and do not read extracurricular books. If such Chinese teaching is not reformed in time, it will be irresponsible for the future of students.
