Editor's Note: It took Teng Teng 8 months, starting from May this year, to memorize the vocabulary from grade 6 to grade 3. I randomly tested him on the second grade vocabulary test two days ago, and he was able to get around 80 out of 100 words, which was really good. Although he couldn't compare to Haidian Niuwa, he was already far ahead compared to himself. I asked him to summarize his experience of memorizing English words. This can also be regarded as output practice. Hence the following.
Hello everyone!
Today I want to share some methods about learning English.
Actually, I don’t do anything else now. I just do one more thing than others, which is learning words .
Why is learning vocabulary so important? Because other items in the college entrance examination English are actually very simple. The most important thing is the number of words. The word count for the high school entrance exam is 2,500, and the word count for the college entrance exam is 3,500. I am improving my vocabulary now.
But what if you can't start it? Then you need to start small. For example, only do it for ten minutes, and then gradually improve after a period of time, so that it is easy for you to accept it.
There are three zones in learning: comfort zone, learning zone and panic zone. If you memorize too many words, then the task will enter your panic zone and you will not be able to complete it. And if it’s too little, you’re entering your comfort zone and making no progress. Therefore, the amount of words you choose should be in your study area, so that you feel it is a little difficult, but you can complete it easily.
What if you can only work hard for two days and then you can’t hold on? At this time, you can give yourself a small reward when you reach a certain goal, such as the following story.
There is a person who wants to study abroad. But if you want to study abroad, you must pass TOEFL before you can go. It was boring for that person to carry it every day. But as long as I went abroad, the scholarship would be tens of thousands of dollars at that time. Equivalent to hundreds of thousands of RMB. He made a calculation. Divide the amount of scholarship money you receive by the total number of words you need to memorize. In this way, he calculated that he could earn 20 yuan for every word he memorized.
So at the end of memorizing words every day, he always ends with how much money he made today, so that there is a feedback for every word he memorizes. How much money did you make? In this way, the more you learn, the more motivated you will be and the more you want to continue learning. This method should also successfully help you.
What do I do every day? The first thing is to check in every day. Don’t ask for a lot every day, but ask for persistence every day and remember it firmly. So why do you have to clock in every day instead of focusing on memorizing all the words in one day? This is because people will forget, and this forgetting law is called the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve . Although you memorize it all in one day, the longer it takes, the faster you will forget it, so it is actually of no use. I started checking in at the beginning of May 2021, and it is now the end of December, almost half a year since I checked in.
Not only do you need to check in every day, you also need to review regularly, quickly complete the study and test cycle, and discover the words you don't know. In this way, you can focus on consolidating and reviewing the words you don't know, and the efficiency will be higher, instead of repeating the practice on the words you know.
And you can also use some methods when memorizing, such as root affixes. The root affix is like a brand, giving each word a different label. It is also equivalent to an saw , sawing the words apart and turning them into pieces. And each root affix has a specific meaning. And if you learn more words, see more, and remember the meanings, you can use association to remember similar words, which will be more efficient.
And when memorizing words, don't just memorize the words, but put the words in sentences so that they can be applied. Otherwise, you only know what the word means, and you can read and write it, but you cannot apply it.
Moreover, if you have any methods, don’t just do it blindly, you can also learn from other methods for comparison, so as to better improve your efficiency.
For example, I changed a software for a while, but later found that the software was not very good. Because as soon as he comes up and shows the pictures, we will not remember the words, but the pictures. At this time, we will create a false memory and think that we have remembered it. Then I will simply cross it, and I will not know it at all when I take the test.
Finally, I want to say, If you treat something as a task, then you will definitely not do it well. Because your heart is not on this, you cannot achieve the flow state. Flow state means that when you are doing something, you are particularly focused. Your mind and the thing itself are integrated, and you don't know about other things. You are very focused.
If you want to do something well, the best way is to enter a flow state.
That’s all my sharing today, thank you all.
