Paris, August 25 (Lujia) The latest barometer released by the French National Union of Students (Unef) shows that in the new academic year from 2022 to 2023, the cost of university living in 46 of France’s 47 university towns will rise. The association publishes rankings of the cost of college living in each city.

According to "Le Figaro", from rent to transportation costs, the total cost of living for French college students in the new academic year has increased by about 6.5% year-on-year, but there are great differences in different cities. These rankings mainly take into account four components of the cost of living: basic expenses (registration fees, phone bills, meals, etc.), average rent, public transportation costs for non-scholarship students, and the amount of individual housing allowance (APL).

The top 10 cities with the highest cost of living are mainly in the Paris Region, which remains the most expensive area for students. In the provinces, Nice remains the most expensive city to live in, as in 2021, while Lyon also makes the top 10. Overall, cities with the highest cost of living are those with the largest student populations.

In terms of the average monthly living cost of college students, Paris leads the list with 1,332 euros, and Le Mans (Le Mans) ranks last with 482 euros. Surprisingly, the city with the fastest growing cost of living is Angers, with an increase of 11.5% in one year. Like Angers, the biggest increases in living costs are mainly in medium-sized cities, such as Brest, Perpignan or Chambéry. The French National Union of Students explained that this is partly because more and more students are moving to medium-sized cities after the COVID-19 epidemic, and partly because the increase in the number of university students has led to a higher demand for housing. The only city where the cost of living fell was Champs-sur-Marne in the Paris region's Seine-et-Marne department. It should be noted that this list shows that the cost of university living in 20 cities has increased more than the national inflation rate of 6.1%, such as Bordeaux (Bordeaux), Chambery, Aix-en-Provence (Aix-en -Provence) etc.

Rent is the main expenditure item for college students. 70% of college students in France no longer live with their parents. According to data from the French National Union of Students, the national average housing cost in the new academic year has increased by 1.37% year-on-year, and the increase in many cities has exceeded this average, such as Brest and Angers, which have increased by approximately 14% year-on-year. Paris remains the city with the highest rents, with the average monthly rent for college students being 862 euros. That compares to 361 euros at Le Mans. In the provinces, the city with the highest rents is Nice, where the average monthly rent for college students is 629 euros.

Transportation is also an important expense item. The National Union of French Students estimates that transportation costs in major cities have increased by 0.39% year-on-year. Paris, Nanterre, Saint-Denis, Créteil, Orsay, etc. are the university cities with the highest transportation costs. In cities such as Lyon, Besançon and Saint-Étienne, transportation costs have dropped significantly.

In order to solve the problem of poverty among college students, the National Union of French Students has called on the French government to develop a housing renovation plan, increase personal housing subsidies by 20%, and provide free public transportation for college students and other young people.
