In 1920, Harbin Institute of Technology was founded. At that time, the school was named " Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School ". In 1938, the school was renamed "Harbin Institute of Technology". In 1954, the State Council identified six universities as the first batch of national key universities. In 1960, the Heavy Machinery College of Harbin Institute of Technology became an independent school and was named "Northeast Heavy Machinery College".
