National University of Defense Technology is located in Changsha. It is a key university for 11 project , 985 project, double first-class and military "2110 project". It is one of the first universities approved by the State Council to have the right to grant master's and doctoral degrees. The positioning of the National University of Defense Technology is mainly reflected in two aspects: cultivating grassroots officers and cultivating military-industrial scientific and technological talents. The National University of Defense Technology is known as the "Tsinghua University in the Military".

Although the National Defense University is a military academy, it is very different from the traditional military academy. The National Defense University focuses on military talent training and does not have formal undergraduate education. The National Defense University mainly recruits in-service officers at the military regiment level or above, and party and government cadres at the local department level or above. They do not recruit students from local areas or high school graduates. Therefore, it is impossible to enter the National Defense University through the general college entrance examination.

To study in the National Defense University, three conditions must be met: first, you must be an officer at the intermediate level or above in the army, and at least you must be a lieutenant colonel; second, you must be from the combat troops or military training base ; third, you must be recommended by the head of the military region. Only by meeting these three strict conditions at the same time can you successfully enter the National Defense University.

National University of Defense Technology is different, and it enrolls students nationwide and admits outstanding high school graduates in the early batch of college entrance examinations, and both undergraduate, master and doctoral students belong to the regular national education sequence.
