By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and digital cameras sold in EU must be equipped with USB-C interfaces - a decision made by the European Parliament at the plenary meeting held in Strasbourg on Tuesday. Standardization of

chargers has been discussed in Europe for a long time. For example, this summer, there has been a decision to require iPhones to be equipped with USB-C port .

On Tuesday, the European Parliament passed a legal decision with 602 votes, 13 votes against and 8 abstentions, covering all small electronic devices without exception under the new legal obligations of unified chargers.

The same USB-C port is added to new phones, tablets and digital cameras, and can be wired charging at up to 100 W.

In addition, headphones, portable gaming consoles, speakers, e-book readers , keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and laptop will also be subject to the same legal constraints. However, according to MTI, the legislation will begin in fall 2026.

The goal of this regulation is to reduce waste generated by electrical and electronic equipment and allow consumers to select products from that range based on sustainability.

When consumers change portable electronic devices, there is no need to use a different charger for each device.

According to EP, by avoiding unnecessary charger replacement, you can save up to 250 million euros per year, while the amount of electronic waste generated in Europe is also significantly reduced (currently, an additional 11,000 tons of waste is generated every year when replacing charging devices).
