According to incomplete statistics, in more than two weeks after its launch, there have been at least 15 cases of "spontaneous combustion" burning of RTX 4090 graphics cards, but NVIDIA and brand manufacturers have not yet investigated it.
Steve Burke, a hardware veteran from Gamer Nexus, recently found three RTX 4090 and five power cables, and after several hours of high-strength testing, it was found that even if the so-called cable bends, too loose and tight plugging and unplugging were taken into account, the burning problem was not repeated. The worst case was that the temperature rose by 8℃ because the connection was not tight at the socket.
, but further investigation found an interesting variable. The RTX 4090 graphics card currently on the market, manufacturers provide two specifications of power supply adapter cables, namely 150V 16AWG and 300V 14AWG. The five wires in the aforementioned test are all 300V 14AWG. The difference between the two cables is that 14AWG is thicker than 16AWG, and the current carrying capacity and voltage can be withstand higher. In addition, after peeling off the wire, it was found that the 16AWG power supply was welded by 4 wire heads and metal sheets one by one at the position where the 16Pin was transferred, while the 14AWG wire was welded in pairs, with a larger contact area and more even heat dissipation.
Although it is not possible to conclude that there is a necessary connection between the burned and the 16AWG 150V cable, at least it has become a variable that cannot be ignored.
So how many users have 16AWG 150V cables in their hands?
GN collected 130 player reports, and only 7 people got the 150V 16AWG adapter cable, with a proportion of only 5.4%, and all came from the same non-public manufacturer.
Hardware Luxx collected 29 user reports, 79% of people received a 14AWG 300V adapter cable, while the rest was 16AWG. In addition, from a regional perspective, consumers in the US market hardly received 16AWG lines, mainly concentrated in Europe.
