Judging from my own listening experience, the aviation band is not very meaningful either. It is not a 24-hour non-stop broadcast, it only has calls when the plane takes off and lands. If you live near a large airport in a first-tier city and the plane takes off and lands frequently, the chances and frequency of calls you hear are quite high. If I live in a small border town like me, I sometimes have to listen for an hour or two before I can hear a few calls.
In addition to listening factors, the content of aviation band calls is also meaningless. Often, the flight number, weather, wind direction, wind speed, altitude, speed, which runway to enter and exit, etc. The signal is often mixed with a lot of back noise, or is intermittent. If you are an English learning enthusiast, you can practice listening, feel and experience English with various dialects and flavors.
Because of the above two factors, I was a little interested in it during the days when I first came into contact with the aviation band, and over time I felt bored. I think there are three main points:
first, it must have squelch function. As I mentioned in the previous article, the aviation band needs to be listened to. As the name suggests, keep listening, it will not talk continuously. There is always a rustling band noise floor noise between calls. When the plane talks to tower , the rustling noise floor noise will recede. The noise squelching function can hide these continuous noise floors and keep the radio silent. Only when the received signal reaches the squelching threshold set by the user themselves, the noise squelching function will be temporarily invalid and the call sound will be transmitted. Imagine that if there is no squelching function, your ears will always be tortured by rustling noise; with the squelching function, it will block the noise, let go of voice, and even stop weak signals with poor intelligibility and let go of strong signals. Doesn't it sound very comfortable?
Among the radios I have used, machines with squelching functions are: ① Eaton Elite Satellit, the squelching level is divided into 20 levels; ② Hanrongda 747, the squelching level is divided into 9 levels; ③ Shanjin 909X2, the squelching level is divided into 12 levels; ④ Deshibo RD1780, which is also 9 squelching level classification; ⑤ Deshibo 1860, which has 5 squelching levels; ⑥ Deshen S2000, there is no clear squelching level division, and the squelching level is adjusted through a knob. However, radios such as Desheng PL660, PL680, Hanrongda 737 do not have noise squelching functions.
Second, it must have automatic search function. The air frequency used by airports in different places is different. If you want to know the exact frequency of your local airport, the usual practice is to search online, and some aviation enthusiasts or radio enthusiasts will share this information. But it has a disadvantage: the information included may be incorrect and inaccurate. Maybe the airport used to use the frequency of 130 megabytes, but it has been changed recently, and the information online has not been updated and maintained in real time. If you listen at 130 megabytes, you will definitely hear loneliness.
At this time, if your radio aviation band has an automatic search function, it will be easy to do, let it search back and forth in this aviation band repeatedly and continuously.Although there are intervals between airline calls, you can't hold back the continuous sweeps of the frequency without listening. It won't take long to capture the new frequency of the aviation band that is being called. Isn't this a new world discovered? If the automatic search function is missing and the user searches manually alone, I would bet that 80% of users do not have this patience and cannot afford this time.
