The trick to getting a black and white AOD display now is to use a long-standing focus mode setting called “Lock screen dimming.” This has the effect of making iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max completely dark in AOD mode .
How to enable black and white AOD lock screen
To enable this feature, please navigate to Settings - Focus Mode - [Select Focus Mode] - Options - Enable lock screen to dim. Now, when this focus mode is activated, the lock screen dimming setting will take effect. When the user's iPhone 14 Pro enters AOD display mode, the entire lock screen will be converted to simple black and white mode.
IT Home learned that in this mode, the AOD display displays the date and time in white font (and any widget selected)…that’s all. Any custom lock screen wallpaper or photo will be completely darkened.
However, there are some disadvantages to enabling this setting. For those who try it out, it only works in focus mode – if you want to permanently display black and white AOD, you need to be in focus mode all day long. The Focus Mode Status tab will also appear at the bottom of the lock screen.
More importantly, enabling the bleak lock screen will also change your lock screen when the iPhone is awake. It blurs the wallpaper. After all, the intended purpose of this feature related to Focus Mode is to dim the lock screen of the phone and make the iPhone less distracted when focusing on other things.
